Writing career bugged?
« on: June 15, 2010, 08:37:27 PM »
So I recently made a writer sim, but he's having a hard time advancing. When he submits chapters his job experience goes up, but not when he gets his weekly royalty check. The thing is for the two weeks I've tracked this both times the royalty check would have gotten him the next promotion, which is what makes me wonder I'd this a bug or if they meant it to be this way. It seems strange that royalties wouldn't count cause that's the main way writers make money but maybe they thought writers would advance too fast otherwise.

I haven't really noticed how the advancement in career works for a writer, but I wouldn't have thought that getting a royalty payment would increase his experience as a royalty payment is for work he has already done.

But with the painter career, experience is on money made. I would have thought that author would be the same.

Well, what's listed on the career tab for the writer?  Does it show money as the marker that advances the career?

The lack of weekly earnings contributing to job level has been submitted as a bug.  We'll have to see what the first patch fixes.

Wierd, seems different systems get different bugs.  My writer has been getting advancement for royalties-  don't know if it makes a difference, but that sim is in the starter town.

I also have a writer sim, she is in Twinbrook, she also does not get advancement with her weekly royalties, just chapter submissions and right after she finishes her book.
Ignorance is not an excuse, please read the forum rules.

Well, I think that you wouldn't get experience for royalties. I mean, that's what the publisher gives you already... it's like the stipend is just an addition to the royalties... I think the money in the requirements means the money you get RIGHT AFTER finishing the book. Right? I'm not sure though as I've never tried author in ambitions... yet.

If the sole component in determining job experience is money, then I think the royalties should count.  It's money you've made from writing the book, even it if technically comes after the book is finished.  It's your payment for the work you've done.  I hope this is just a bug that gets fixed.

I don't think this is a bug.
As my sim self-employed as a writer. She got royalty payment of over 10k weekly after wrote 20 books.
If this payment counted as experience. My sim can earn a promotion without writing any new book.
Now I realize playing the Sims 3 on Mac is playing the game of installation and uninstallation...

But it's still annoying that after a full 90-day life my writer sim was only level 8 in her career.

I was having this problem with the writer career track and also the business track for a similar reason even before I installed Ambitions. I haven't been back to their lots to check them since installing Ambitions, either.
My business sim was at the top couple of rungs on the corporate ladder when her job performance stopped improving when she was at work. The only way it would improve was when she would hold meetings, and for some reason I lost the ability to hold meetings at other places other than the Doo Peas tower. So, her job performance continues to suffer, and the suggestion comes up for every meeting that it's more beneficial to have meetings in other spots.

Does anyone know if the problem with self-employed writers not getting credit for royalty payments has been fixed?  I'm wondering if it's feasible to have a self-employed writer in my Dynasty or if the writer will have to take up journalism as a career.

Well when I played the self-employed writer track it wasn't counting royalties towards experience, and that was a couple of weeks ago at most. I did manage to get her all the way to rank 10 but she was well into her elder phase by then (personally I feel it's not so much bugged as badly scaled, if the figures were a little lower so that progression was in line with say painting, the lack of contribution from royalties would be a non issue). That said, at the point where she finally clawed her way past the line she was getting something like 90,000 simoleans a week in royalties, so the lack of career progression wasn't exactly holding up her ability to earn. If you do go the self-employed writer route, may I heartily recommend the Entrepreneurial Mindset reward, it doesn't look like it should make a difference, that is to say, the figure listed as simoleans left until next level doesn't change when you get the reward, but it actually does speed up progression, basically each one simolean you earn reduces that total left to go by more than one (I don't know exactly how much by as I wasn't counting that closely, but I was definitely climbing faster after I got that).

Aiwe, thanks for sharing your information.  With my Dynasty sim needing to reach level 10 of their career before they can eat ambrosia, I'm not sure this would be a good career track to take on if it takes that long to get to the top.  By the way, I am totally amazed by your 90,000 a week royalties!  That's a lot of writing!  Thanks again.
