A New Way To Prevent Death - Guaranteed to Work
« on: June 15, 2010, 11:13:03 AM »
Hi, normally I don't go in for killing Sims but recently I've started a project where I try and kill all of Sunset Valley. One day as Morgana Wolff was going through the death rigmarole with Grimmy, when I clicked on him a command popped up saying 'Play Chess for Morgana's Life.' My Sim only has 1 point of logic but she won and Morgana was ressurected. Upon further testing, I found out that if you canceled the action, Grimmy would still go to the chess table, practise chess for a short while then say that you had won. Afterwards, he always stayed around. I'm unsure if this works for old age - the likelihood is that it doesn't. It may also come with Ambitions and you probably have to have learnt the logic skill. Sorry about all the 'maybes' but I'm too busy messing with Ambitions to test it properly.  ;) Anyway, it's a very useful thing and I noticed it isn't in the guide.

That's a reference to the movie The Seventh Seal. Not that I have any idea what that movie is...

Welcome to the Forum, Tweetybird!

Thanks for that information.  I'm pretty sure that's something new.  We'll all have to start testing it now so it can be added to the guide.

My elders are about ready to meet up with Grimmy so when they do I'll give the chess thing a shot and see if it works for old age.

This is a great exploit (that with canceling the action) which is new to me, but I know that playing chess with the reaper has been a feature from game launch.

It's a movie by the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman and its original language is Swedish.
It's often cited as the top example of one of those boring Swedish films, but one time I actually saw the whole thing just for the sake of it. There, the protagonist plays chess with death over the life of a group of people as everybody is struck by the plague. Death wins over the knight and it ends with everyone walking away with death towards the horizon; the message being that you can't beat death (at life or at chess ;)).
Manbearpig simply wants to get you. I'm super cereal. - Al Gore :)

Really?  We've always had the ability to play chess with the Grim Reaper to keep him from taking the dead Sim?

I think I remember reading about this on the EA Sims 3 forum ages ago, because people were debating whether it was a reference to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (or the sequel); or The Seventh Seal, or any other number of films/tv shows.

I've never actually tried doing it myself though.

My daughter discovered this a few weeks ago, and Grimmy spared the Sim in question.  Ironically she wanted to get the golddigger wish and then have a ghost in the family.  But the opportunity was to good to pass up.

Did see her sitting at the chess table with Grim; definitely a great scene in the game.

Just for the heck of it a couple of times, I clicked on the grim reaper and it said no interaction available, both elder and other ages.  Hmm, maybe will try again.

How old was the Sim who was supposed to die?

When my sim caught on fire from sculpting, I didn't have that option. Strange. But I can't recall if she even had 1 logic point yet, it happened so early in her sim lifespan.  :D I do know there was a chess setup in the workshop. This sounds very interesting, I'm definitely going to try this!  ;D

Caught fire from sculpting?  Not inventing?  Was it while doing a metal sculpture with the blow torch?

Yes it was  ;D   I didn't know sculpting metal could end in a mishap like that and unfortunately I wasn't prepared with a pool or shower on the lot. The firefighter arrived just in time to see the grim reaper collecting my soul.  ::)

As far as I know it was only possible to play chess with him (which I've heard, I never got the uppertunity to do whatever interaction with the Grim Reaper everyone is talking about on this forum), but the change of winning the game and therefore beating death is new to me to.
