Downloading advice for a real no hoper!!
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:28:14 AM »
Hi guys ,
My problem is this , i have just downloaded origin again to download my sims 3 and various expansions due to buying a new pc ( medion erazor x5313d/7778 ) as my old computer blew up never to be used again , now i have sims 3 and everytime i download it , it will happen to go to my boot (c:) which only has 21 .gb left , yet my expansions will take that up , now i have a data drive with 1.30 TB sitting there and i know to some will sound plain crazy , (plz be kind im kinda old ) i really dont know how to transfer the downloads to this place ( if they can ).  if the sims will fill my boot drive , does this matter? will it affect my computer?
the other case was when i downloaded the game originally ( on new comp before i realised it took up whole drive (C:) and uninstalled it ) that when i donlaoded on boot drive , the same first patch wanted to be downloaded, trust me 6 times in a row i gave up and uninstalled origin and sims 3 , why is this , is my computer too new? or be honest , ( not too brutal plz ) am i missing something here , my old comp had no probs running the game ! my specs are
windows 7
INTEL CORE i7 - 2600k processer
nvidea ge force gtx560
12 gb ram
1.5 tb hard drive
80gb secondary solid state hard drive
Thankyou for your patience and hope someone if any one can help

I'd start by going to Origin. At the top there will be a drop down menu. Click on "Origin" and go to "Application Settings". It looks like you can change the destination folder from there. It probably just goes to C by default.

Hi, tarzanspants.

You can install Origin games on the D:\ drive by setting the installation folder in the Origin client. I have instructions on downloading, backing up and restoring The Sims 3 from Origins here. Just substitute D:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts for the default install folder, and I would also change the default Installer folder to D:\ProgramData\Origin\ if you have other games from Origin. This will save space on your C:\ drive which is likely the 80 GB Solid State Drive.
the other case was when i downloaded the game originally ( on new comp before i realised it took up whole drive (C:) and uninstalled it ) that when i donlaoded on boot drive , the same first patch wanted to be downloaded, trust me 6 times in a row i gave up and uninstalled origin and sims 3 , why is this , is my computer too new? or be honest , ( not too brutal plz ) am i missing something here , my old comp had no probs running the game ! my specs are

Likely the issue is the patch is having problems finding the game files, if I'm reading this correctly. Origin defaults to installing games in C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games. The Sims 3 installers expect the game and expansions to be installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts. For the most part, the patches can detect where the game is installed and run without problems. However, some do not and don't work as well as they should. I've found that downloading the patch manually instead of through the launcher does help. The official EA "super patch" can be found here. This will patch the base game to 1.38 and you shouldn't need to patch again after installing the expansion/stuff packs. Keep this file handy with your Origin backups and you shouldn't need to re-download all your games/expansions in the future.

Hope this helps. :)
