How can I transfer my game from my old laptop to my new one?!
« on: August 29, 2012, 11:11:55 PM »
The laptop I am on now keeps overheating. I can't even load my game on the Sims anymore without it overheating and shutting down. I have had it for about three years (I think I got it Feb 2009). I am getting a new laptop here at tax time and I need to know if it is possible to get my game from my old laptop to my new one. I really want to continue my game! Is it possible to do? And how?

Also, does anyone know if this is a good laptop to run the sims? I have heard good things about it, I just want to know if it will run good.

HP Pavilion dv4t-5100 Entertainment Notebook PC

3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3110M (2.4 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 630M Graphics with 2GB of dedicated video memory
FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm)
FREE Upgrade to 500GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
No additional security software
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
14.0" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768) SVA
Microsoft(R) Office Starter: reduced-functionality Word/Excel(R) only, No PowerPoint(R)/Outlook(R)
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone
802.11b/g/n WLAN
Standard Keyboard Black

The 500 GB should be enough right? I have the base game, Late Night, Ambitions, Showtime, Pets, World Adventures, Generations. I am also probably going to get the Supernatural and the Seasons too when they come out.

Thanks for all the help a head of time! ;D

Hi, Ally.

The laptop you're looking at should be fine for playing The Sims 3. It has a decent processor, decent memory and a great graphics card. One thing you may want to consider if you can afford it is to increase the memory to 6 GB or 8 GB. Sims 3 is a very resource hungry game and the more memory you can throw at it, the better. If you can't afford it right away, consider it for a future upgrade. :)

Also, note the Core i3 processor includes an Intel HD 4000 graphics card built-in. Most, if not all systems with Ivy or Sandy Bridge processors, ship with the Intel graphics enabled by default. You will need to go into the nVidia settings and make sure the nVidia chip is the default enabled graphics and you should have no problems running the game.

To back up your saved games, look in C:\Users\<username>\My Documents\ to find a folder called The Sims 3. Inside that folder is a folder called Saves. All of your saved games are in this folder. Other folders you may want to back up include SavedSims (Sims you've saved into the Sim Bin in Create a Sim), Screenshots (any in-game pictures taken with the 'C' key), Exports (any items you've shared) and Downloads (includes your ready-to-install Store items, custom content, SimPort progress, etc.).

Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks. :)

In the Sims folder there is also one called Video I believe, which holds the clips you've recorded in your game, if you have any.
You might want to keep that one as well.

Alternatively, if you have patience, you could take your entire The Sims 3 folder(s) with you on a USB (or two, it's a large folder) - that way, anything that you might forget will come along too.

Better to be save then sorry? Yeah, I agreed with that one.

Thank you all, you have been very helpful! ;D

The only other question I have is about the 500 GB for the hard drive. Will that be enough to hold all the expansions? I have six right now and the base game. I also want to get the Supernatural and the Seasons when they come out. Will 500GB be enough?

Hi Ally,

Hubby asked me to pass along a reply -

Yes, you will have plenty of space. The complete set of expansions and stuff packs is about 25 GB total by the time you factor in the The Sims 3 folder. -

That is true but don't forget that you also have to deal with the save files you will get. The more families you have the more space you Wilkinson need.
And aside from that: the game also makes a message.backup file of everysave which means you can double through amount of save you will need. also have to deal with the save files you will get. The more families

Hi, Leto.

I was including the saved game folder in my estimate, but I was at work and couldn't check it. :)

I did check it and the entire installation in Program Files\Electronic Arts  is 24.6 GB. My current The Sims 3 folder with saves, downloads, exports, etc. is a little under 10 GB. So, roughly 35 GB for everything.

Jep, should be.
Though a good backup isn't a wade of money either. ;)
