Standard sized lots or Custom lots?
« on: August 27, 2012, 08:28:39 PM »
I'd like to know what our sim communtiy prefers. I'm making a world that I hope will appeal to the majority of our community and I think this information would be useful for anyone building a world.

Original question Posted in poll format:

When downloading a new world from EA or from the exchange, would you prefer the lots to be standard sizes to make placing other lots easier, or custom sizes, to suit the buildings made by the creator?  Custom Sizes? Standard Sizes (as in available in world editor)? Or does it not matter to you?

I think you can have a variety. Personally I like houses and residential lots to be standard sizes, but community lots can vary.

My vote would be for standard sized.  I guess I don't have the patience to find a building that fits into a non-standard sized lot.  Since custom sized building can go into standard lots this just seems easier to me.  And it can be nice to have some extra space to add landscaping or whatnot.
I'm Tealeaf, and I approve of this message.

I'm building a world too (well, it's just Riverview's map with some changes) and I'm using a lot of custom sized lots because I like how they suit Riverview's downtown. I usually think custom sized lots are better for aesthetical purposes, but they are extremely impractical when it comes to placing pre-built stuff in them or uploading the lots to the swap shop. I now have a 63x11 lot in Riverview (a park by the river) and it looks really pretty, but there's no way I could upload it since  no one would be able to place it anywhere unless he would load the world in CAW and place the lot there.

I think I prefer custom sized lots when I am creating the world and standard sized ones when I am playing it, since that means that if I don't like something 100% I can easily change whatever I want without spending hours trying to find a building that suits.

Another world builder here :) I've divided the lots into standard and non-standard sizes - sometimes standard sizes won't fit, or I want to do something specific - there's a 64 x 10 lot in my world, for example. It's that way for a reason...

Residential lots are a range of standard sizes, because people like to build or import their own houses, but community lots are often more 'world-based' (in my experience, anyway)...

Chuckles just so you know I'm removing the poll from this thread and adding the question to your original post.   Polls are only used on this forum to gather specific information that the Forum needs or for the building contest.  While this information is still useful to builders and probably yourself, a poll is unnecessary because people can give their answers just as easily in post format.

Sorry, I thought that we just couldn't use them for frivolous things. We have a poll for our favourite EA world, and I can't see why that information would be useful outside of the discussion. You're right though. The discussion has added extra help in answering my question. Do you remember what the results were before you took it down? When I checked last night, the results combined with discussion were leaning towards some custom community lots but standard residential lots, but there were only about 10 votes.

When I saw it, it had ten votes, 6 for standard sized, and 4 for don't care... So there's a definite preference for standard sized lots - understandable when you consider that a main bonus for Sims players is the ability to customise everything...

That's what it was when I took down the poll.  There were 10 votes and they were 0-6-4 in order.

I voted don't care because I change so much on my own anyway. I mostly build houses rather than use pre-built ones. SOMEday I will move a sim into one of the crazy Victorians in Appaloosa Plains and get rid of the clutter and pink and green decor.
