The weirdest thing is when they paint still life it's clear and beautiful, put portraits like blurry and distorted. My Sim is level 10 in painting, and I have the highest graphics available. It doesn't matter if it's day or night they all look that way.

I get the same thing and I just stop the painter as soon as I see it and then try again.  About every fourth one seems to come out clear.  Maybe try a different easel but it's perfectly normal as far as I can tell.  I don't remember it always being this way but it's definitely normal.

If the painter has the Artistic trait, the paintings can come out blurry.  Like it's artsy or something.

Portraits in general have a weird filter added to them that makes them blurry. I know of a mod to get rid of it, but I have no idea if it's been updated recently or if you'd be willing to use it.

The traits will effect how the paintings look. What traits does your painter have.

Some of the effects traits have on painting are:

Artistic - Gives a water-color effect to the painting, though with highlighted border effects on the object of the painting.
Can't Stand Art - Darkens the painting with higher contrast and heavier, thicker brush strokes.
Computer Whiz - Gives the painting a square-tiled effect, obliterating any detail.
Evil - Tints the picture heavily towards red, most details are left intact.
Grumpy - Tints the picture heavily towards blue, most details are left intact.
Genius - Tiles the picture into small white-bordered hexagons/pentagons.
Insane - Obliterates detail, makes colors more flat and contrasting, shapes become jagged.
Neurotic - Turns the painting into a bright neon mess.
Virtuoso - Adds a white flair effect to the painting, most details are left intact.
A clear conscience is usually a sign of a bad memory.

They aren't always blurry.  If you keep trying, you'll get one that's clear without using a mod.

When thesimslover posted, she was specifically talking about portraits which isn't effected by traits at all.  They just come in two styles - blurry and clear.  It's completely random which one you get and there is no guarantee you'll always get either.  You just have to keep trying like Pam said.

I guess I'll have to try because I hate them blurry. I want portraits to look as good as the paintings they randomly make when you tell them to paint. I was trying to get my Sim to paint a portrait of a Dynasty Founder and I want it to look good, lol. By the way it's he, but it's OK. ;D

So sorry!  I guess I keep getting thrown off by your avatar.  I know it's an actress and I know the tv show but it still happens when I'm typing too fast.

Dynasties seem to bring out the blurry in my experience.  Just as soon as it appears you'll know if it's blurry or not so you can just go ahead and stop the action and keep trying.   I just had to do 6 in a row to get Gen 6's Adult portrait non blurry.  The worst part is the blurrier the more likely a masterpiece sometimes.

It's OK no problem, so do you just hang the blurry portraits around and keep the non blurry for the official founder's portrait?

Sometimes I'll let them but half the time as soon as I see it's blurry (so right after the first pain appears on the canvas), I will cancel the action, scrap the painting and do it over again.

Another tip that I learned from samoht: Right before your Sim turns to do the official portrait.  Hit the tab key.  You'll have more freedom to get a better angle on the Sim you're painting.  I always pause right before accepting the picture to.  You can pause by hitting the P key while the window is up to choose the size portrait.  I think that might help with the blurriness but that could just be me wishing it were true.

I got real close to her and it's not blurry! Maybe it just helps because you can get it so much closer then normal. It's also nice because it's her face, not the stuff behind her.
Edit: It's just her face not anything else is what I meant.
Edit: It can still make blurry portraits but at least her portrait of the Dynasty Founder was clear.
