Opinions on Lucky Palms?
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:44:31 AM »
I am finding it boring and insipid.  What does it have to offer besides a cool fountain and a good back story?  Not much in my opinion.  Once you load it up with venues there is a bit more to it but there just aren't enough people to make it really interesting and vital.  If it was supposed to be similar to a Las Vegas type town, it failed.  Vegas is very vibrant and active day and night.  There is always something going on and there is quite a large population of folks who just live there, then there are the tons of tourists.  If you took the tourists away you'd still have a really active place to live.  Plus, there's the "strip".  Not just one casino, but one after the other after the other, each one different and each one trying to outdo the other with outrageous designs and things they offer for you to do. Right now we have a choice of two kinds of casinos, one isn't really a gambling establishment but it works ok.

We got some new cacti, and that's good, but they sure left out a lot as well.  Barrel cactus, saguaro, sage brush, tumbleweeds and more.  How about jojoba?  I know they couldn't put in all the kinds of cacti there are but a joshua tree and different colors of one kind of cactus doesn't do it for me.  Nice to have the yucca though.  Plus, the desert isn't always red!

Also, the buildings all pretty much look alike.  Boring boxlike things all in white with lots of glass.  Did they not hear of haciendas?  Or adobe?

In other words, this town is a remodelers dream come true!

I'm playing a challenge in Lucky Palms right now and I think I like it.  It's a big change from the green of Sunset Valley and others, but it has a stark beauty to it.  Places like the public pool are gorgeous.  I haven't met many of the townies because the challenge requires my Sims to focus on their one particular thing and they stay at home for that.  I built a house that I'm rather proud of, though.  I'm thinking about putting it on the Showboat thread.

Oh, please do!  I'd love to see your build and download it if you allow!

I am getting more fond of the desert feel.  Since I live in an area that is pretty much always green and lush, it is difficult for me to appreciate the starkness of it and the limitations imposed by lack of more desert flora.  Have you ever seen a tumbleweed?  I love them!  They are so sculptural and have a weird beauty all their own.

That pool is lovely I will admit, and the casino really is quite nice.  We just need more of them.  My plan is to go in there and transform the town which will mean serious bull dozing and/or shifting of buildings.  I plan on putting some more southwest style homes in there which I think would be more appropriate than just one white modern after another.

I wish I knew how to share the towns I remodel.  Not everyone would want them, and of course they cannot be used for challenges, but I think for the most part they make more sense and really do add to game play.  I try to add other forum members houses and Sims in those towns so it's fun because I don't know how those Sims are going to act/react to any given situation.

Can't wait to see your build!

I love it because I think Modern Builds suit it there, whereas so far I don't think there has been a World which suits the Modern style. I also like the new content that came with it, as well as the desert itself. I think that all the space also makes it a good world to build in. The fact there seem to be two separate towns almost makes it even better for me, I have yet to explore the old town and really the new town but it just all looks very picturesque.

Personally I find that all the towns are pretty empty of life, so far I've not noticed much of a difference in LP.

I've just started a file with a Vampiress and her Slave Friend, and am going to be taking over the town bit by bit through her and developing it. That way I build when I feel like it and it won't feel like a chore.

I'm not a particular fan of modern builds unless it's one of Danefaith or Zapkid's, to mention just two of our excellent builders.  Their houses are unique, with touches to them that transform them from the modern white box to a work of art.  My complaint about the Lucky Palms houses is they are so similar.  Sure, there are a few little changes but not enough to make them noteworthy in my opinion.  What you build there is sure to be much more interesting, Tom and I hope you share it on the Showboat thread.  Oh, did I forget to mention you are another of our great modern builders?  ;) ;)

Don't have it yet, but seriously want it just for Darren Dreamer. :)

So far I really like Lucky Palms. It is gorgeous.

I am playing Darren, of course, and having a hard time finding him a lady who is compatible for him. Most reject him outright, including his "romantic interest," Darleen.  They have incompatible zodiac signs.

But he'll keep looking. I built a Dive Bar, added the casino and big show venue and a beauty salon. I will keep adding lots and a few Sims as well to build up the town a bit.

I'm really liking Lucky Palms. I have built several houses for it. And, yes, Joria...they are the southwestern style rather than modern. I agree that it could use more casinos, etc. though. I do love the scenery. I thinks it's just gorgeous! Right now, I'm doing a complete reinstall of the game so won't be able to play for several days. I might just go into withdrawal...LOL

I managed to get Darleen and Darren married last night. In the last game, that I scrapped because I couldn't place lots, she rejected him every time he tried to kiss her. This time it worked. Her woo hoo strut was hilarious. They are married now and she's family oriented. Now to do a complete gut and re-build on Darren Dreamer's house. It is a mess and very awkward to use as a home.

I'm tempted to send them off to the library while I build an entirely new house, but I like the look of the outside and the landscaping, so I am just going to give it a new floor plan.

Wouldn't the problem with Casinos be changed by altering community lots to add gambling sections?

I don't have LP, or the Lucky Simoleon, so if there's some lot designation or something to inhibit that, let me know before I buy them at some unknown point  :P

There is no Casino Lot, all the venue is really is a hangout with some Premium Content gambling items on it. You can also place the objects on your home lot.

Lucky Palms is too dull in my opinion. Too much open space, and too gray. I started a legacy there but got tired of it pretty soon. I like the townies, though, and can see why people find it nice to have a change from the green, lush worlds we normally get.

I like Lucky Palms, and it does remind me of trips I've taken to the Southwest. As for the boxy buildings -- I'm afraid they're a feature. Lucky Palms actually has more diversity than places like Albuquerque -- shopping centers, office buildings, housing developments are all the same beige boxes with low-pitched tile roofs.
