Laundromat
« on: June 07, 2010, 03:21:43 AM »
Hi all,

I have installed Ambitions and have been able to play a bit over the weekend. What is puzzling me is the Laundromat lot: Is there any way to actually do laundry there if you do not have a washing machine at home, or is it just for show? I have a sim with clothes hampers but without washing mashine. She keeps putting her clothes in the hampers but they never fill up. I tested another sim with his own washing machine, the extra moodlets for clean clothes and sheets are nice but since my sims have a tendency to have their bars filled anyway they do not really make a difference.

I haven't tried the laundromat myself yet, but I thought it was really a place to wash clothes.

Pam, I have thought so, too, but so far I have found no way to take my laundry off the home lot for washing :( . I was hoping someone around here might know more about that topic, but so far in my game it looks like the Laundromat is really just for show.

According to the Prima Guide, the laundromat is functional for doing laundry and drying clothes. Of course, it doesn't tell exactly how to do it. Is it possible to drag dirty laundry to your Sim's inventory?

You can have dirty clothes in your inventory, and on the floor or in a hamper. But I'm not sure it matters that much.

You can just click the washing machine and get the option to (Do Laundry($25)). Once you get one installed at home, the maid will wash your clothes aswell.

Hope it helps.

I have not tried that yet. I have a clothes hamper in the bathroom and in the bedroom, so they do not leave clothes lying around, and I did not find a way to get the clothes out of there except by putting a washing mashine on the same lot (in which case they get the clothes when they do their laundry in their own washing mashine). If I am lucky I will get a bit of sims time tonight (my husband takes the kids to a doctor's appointment where there is usually considerable waiting time ;D ). I will definitely test this some more. Thanks for your answers (my own guide will not be here for a week or two i guess)!

Maybe that means my game is broken, because I can not click on the washing mashines at the laundromat lot. Or is that option only available if you have clothes in your inventory? Because I do not have any clothes lying around, they all went into the hamper (and I did not see a way to get them out of there). I guess I will have to do some more testing. Thanks for the answer, Merrilin!

I don't have a hamper in my house, and have never done laundry.  But I haven't seen any negative moodlets from this either?

I started a New Game when Ambitions came out.

Should I be doing laundry?

@ Puppetmaster, the laundry system is completely optional.  It's just the good moodlets you get with clean laundry.  With no washer or dryer, the sims don't realize they have dirty clothes.  :D

I'm going to put hamper in family inventory and have sim go to laundromat and see if I can get the washers to work.  I think it would be a great place to meet and greet sims.  ;D

This may sound stupid, but are you sure you didn't click on the dryer?

I don't think you need a hamper to do laundry at the laundrymat. I think you can just go there and wash clothes to get the moodlets. when  I first played with ambitions installed I went to the laundrymat and just did a wash and that was it. So I think it is a place to get the moodlets without owning a washing and drying machine. If you can't click on a washer maybe it is a glitch. Hope I helped.

I just had to go into edit town and replace every washer and dryer in the town laundromat, since not one would give me the option to wash clothes.  After I replaced them, all was good again (for now).

I figured it out :D . There is a tiny light at the top of the washing machine. I guess it indicates if the machine is in use or not. The problem was that most machines in my laundromat had that light on, and there was no option on those machines. I accidentally clicked one where the light was off and found I could do laundry there. That was when I finally noticed the light and what difference it makes. Thank you all for helping me figure this out!

templesmom: your suggestion that the laundromat is there to allow for the moodlets without the equipment at home sounds very plausible :) . I will keep that in mind for sims without washing machines.

Yep, it seems that the laundromat is bugged: I believe town sims use the washer, then wander away, leaving it full of washed clothes that your sim (unless evil) can't remove. Eventually all the washers are taken up with washed clothes.  The only way I found to fix it is to edit the lot and buy all new washers and remove the old ones.
