Chapter 60 – Life's Roller Coaster

I am writing this from a hospital waiting room.

Not exactly the best place to sit down for a lengthy blogging section, but I need something to pass the time while we wait for news. I can't just sit here doing nothing, not while...

...I suppose I will get to that later. This year has been an exercise in ups and downs. So much has happened, much of it positive, some of it decidedly negative. It started out on a very somber note...with the passing of someone very dear to us.

Leighton lived a long and storied life. Fifteen championship seasons, six MVP awards, and his jersey number forever emblazoned on the walls of Llama Memorial Stadium. He was an amazing man in many ways, well-loved by his family and friends, well-respected by his fans. At the very least Judd was able to spend time with him before the end. They spent several hours just talking that night, about life, about children and grandchildren and just how much he missed Zelda.

That very next day, he was gone.

My husband is managing well enough, I suppose. Amid all of the publicity surrounding Leighton's passing Judd and his brother Sam had very little time to grieve on their own. It wasn't until more than a month later that he finally was able to let it all go.

Rest in peace, Leighton Kenji Sekemoto. You were an amazing father and father-in-law, a fantastic grandfather and an equally fantastic great-grandpa. We love you and miss you.

Slowly life began to return to some semblance of normalcy. Of course, normal in this household invariably means insanity, and with three toddlers in the house the craziness is only multiplied.

The twins are growing like weeds. Celestine and Hadrian just had their fourth birthdays and are walking and talking up a storm. Theirs is an innocent world of playtime and laughter, blissfully free of the cares and worries of day-to-day life.

It's hard to believe that they will be starting school next year. Until then, though, I will snuggle with them as long as I can.

I can't ignore my other darling grandchild. Felicia is a little sweetheart, full of energy and always smiling. She more or less skipped walking entirely and is now running everywhere...and gives Kenji and Karina a serious run for their money.

She's definitely her daddy's little girl. (And on a side note to Kenji: I am available to babysit, you know...)

Of course, Felicia is not the only tyke who has her daddy wrapped around her little finger.

Little Madeleine just turned one a little while back and has been the center of attention ever since. Both Timothy and Iris dote on her completely, and so does her grandma.

She is not lacking in affection, that much is certain. :)

Uncle Malcolm received an interesting package in the mail about a week before her first birthday. It was from a cousin in Twinbrook whom he hadn't heard from in years. Inside was a short note...and a strange yet oddly familiar doll.

Bizarre though it may be, Madeleine loves it. I seem to remember having something similar back when I was young, now that I think about it.

A few months after her birthday the spotlight shifted to her older brother and a long-anticipated wedding. After more than a year of patient planning and waiting and a few too many arguments with Eugenia's mother, Marcus and his bride finally gave up on having a wedding party and tied the knot in a private, simple ceremony in the back yard.

The two of them looked just stunning together as they exchanged their vows under the archway.

Timothy looked so proud. Don't let Iris's wistful expression fool you—she was bawling like a baby throughout the entire ceremony.

(Edit: Was not! - Iris)

The newlyweds retired to their room not too long afterward to get a head start on their honeymoon. We didn't see them again until after breakfast the next morning.

They left that afternoon for Sunlit Tides for a month of relaxation and long walks on the beach (and, apparently, a sunburn that kept Marcus indoors for the better part of a week). By the time they returned this past Sunday the two of them were more than ready to get back to the normal daily grind.

The "normal daily grind" lasted for only about three days...

...which brings me back to today...and the reason why I am writing this from the hospital waiting room. Zoey, my sweet daughter, is fighting for her life.

The fire brigade was called to a major house fire on Sim Lane, and by the time they arrived most of the house was already in flames. Zoey and her crew quickly got to work trying to extinguish the blaze, but they were quickly overwhelmed.

While they were inside the roof began to give way. Most of the crew managed to escape safely, but as Zoey was making her way out she found a small boy hiding near the stairwell. Thinking quickly she grabbed the child and pulled him to safety...but in so doing she became trapped by fallen debris.

By the time her crew reached her she was already unconscious and only barely breathing.

It was the one phone call that I had been dreading...the phone call that no mother ever wants to receive. I've always known the risks that Zoey faced in her line of work. Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew that something could happen, even though I had convinced myself that Zoey's athletic skills and her ability to think on her feet would keep her out of danger.

But disaster does not discriminate...and now I could very well lose my little girl.

She has been placed in intensive care, and if she makes it through the night it is likely that she will remain hospitalized for at least two weeks given the extent of her injuries. Right now Andrew is with her, holding her hand and talking to her. Whether she can hear him is anyone's guess.

Mom, Judd and I have decided to stay here and wait out the night. Uncle Malcolm pulled some strings, and we have been allowed the use of one of the spare rooms in case any of us need to sleep.

I don't think that any of us will be sleeping tonight, though.

How are we going to pull through this?

The hospital bed with poor Zoey on there... it makes it all too real. I hope she pulls through.
*hushed tone* Marcus wedding pics were great, and the tods all look adorable.

I haven't posted in a while but I've been keeping up with the story religiously and all I can say is "please not Zoey... It's just not time for her to leave her family behind!"  :'(

Yeah...Leighton is one of my favorite townies, so it always makes me sad when he passes. I'm already starting to think that I might feature him in another story that I have whirling around in my brain. :)

You've done a amazing job with the hospital scene! I hope she will be ok.

Thanks. :) I love setting up scenes. The only problem is getting what I can recreate in the Sims to match the vision that is in my head...which can be a challenge given that I have a very wild imagination. :P

I don't think we're allowed to say that here.  But if we can, me too!

Zoey is such a fun character to play. I like her about as much as I do Marcus. It still blows me away that she still carries the strong Sekemoto genes even after two generations.

Not gonna spoil the next part though. :)

The toddler stage has grown on me. Yes, it can be a pain that they can't be left alone...but wow their little sounds and interactions are just adorable! And thanks--I wasn't sure what to do for Marc's wedding that I hadn't already done, and a simple backyard affair seemed to fit his somewhat introverted personality.

Next up: an interlude. Without giving anything away...just remember that it is always darkest before the dawn. :)

Two Worlds, One Heart - Interlude
« Reply #397 on: February 24, 2013, 01:45:51 AM »
Interlude – Conversations Beyond the Veil

At first Zoey swore that she was dreaming. Her body felt weightless, as if she were drifting on a breeze. There was no sound as she turned her head, no sensation as she flexed her hands.

What had happened? Where was she? I know I woke up this morning. I made breakfast, fed the twins, kissed Andrew goodbye before heading off to the station...

The rest of the day's events came back to her in a sudden rush of thought. Her crew had been called to a terrible fire on the southern side of town. From the very beginning they knew it would be a tough battle, but she never once could have imagined the sheer intensity of the blaze and the damage it had already done. Zoey remembered the sound of cracking wood and crumbling drywall as the roof began to buckle...the shouts of her fellow firefighters as they began to flee...the plaintive whimper of the frightened toddler that stopped her in her tracks.

The loud crash, the heavy weight of the ceiling that pinned her to the floor...and the searing heat of the flames as they drew ever closer to her prone form.

Then...nothingness.

Zoey surmised that she had to be in the hospital. There was no other place that she could possibly be. But if that was the case, why didn't she feel anything? Why didn't she hear any sound?

She chanced opening her eyes and saw only shadows. Was she dreaming...

...or was she...? No...it couldn't be.

“It would explain the weightlessness,” she said out loud. Zoey was surprised when her voice sounded hollow, like a soft echo. Dazed, confused, and more than a little unnerved, she slowly stood up. At least, she thought she stood up. Zoey couldn't feel any sensation whatsoever in any part of her body.

Wait...why was her body glowing orange?

That was when she caught sight of a strange glowing figure floating toward her. It seemed otherworldly, yet there was something oddly familiar...a comforting warmth that she couldn't quite place. As the figure approached its features became more visible; this was clearly a man, or at least the spirit of one. Zoey let out an audible gasp when she realized exactly who it was.

“Granddad,” she breathed. “Is that...really you?”

The figure smiled. “Yes, sweetheart, it's me.”

Zoey wrapped her arms around him and buried her head in the crook of his neck. While it felt wonderful to see her favorite grandfather again, the fact that she was face-to-face with a ghost did not set well in her mind. Her weightlessness, not being able to feel anything, meeting her dead grandfather...there could only be one explanation for it all.

“So this is it then. I really am dead.”

“Yes...and no,” Ethan replied. “Your heartbeat has stopped, so I suppose that you are clinically dead, but the doctors are still working feverishly to save you. And if I know these doctors, they're not about to let you go without a fight.” He paused. “You know, it was very selfless, what you did for that little boy.”

“I couldn't just let that kid die, Granddad.”

“I know you couldn't, sweetheart. That's just who you are, who you have always been. And now there's a four-year-old boy who gets the chance to grow up because of you.”

“I was afraid he wouldn't make it. After that part of the ceiling fell I couldn't move. I just kind of pushed him through the small opening that was left and hoped for the best...” Zoey's voice trailed off as she thought of her own children. “Celestine and Hadrian...they're about the same age. I just can't imagine if it had been one of them.”

“They're beautiful, by the way. The twins.” Ethan smiled. “I watch over them, just as I promised on that last night."

“Yes, they are. I love them so much. I just wish you could be there with them in the flesh. They would just love you.” Her face fell. “And now...they're going to have to grow up without either one of us, aren't they?”

Her grandfather sighed. “That, dear Zoey, is not for me to say. Whether I am here to keep you company until you are called back or here to escort you into the great beyond...I do not know. There is only so much that a sim's body can take. We're not exactly designed to withstand the force of a collapsing ceiling.”

“Or that intense of a blaze.” Zoey sighed deeply. She had always known the risks of her line of work, the possibility that she may one day face a blaze that she could not conquer. No one in the past sixty years had died in the line of duty, and now it seemed she might be the first. “What is happening now?”

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment. “They're still attempting to resuscitate. It looks like Cynthia is bringing out the defibrillator.”

“They have to shock me? That can't be good.”

“Not particularly, but I've seen many, many cases where it does its job.”

Zoey took a deep breath. “I am almost afraid to, but I have to ask...how is Andrew?”

Ethan shook his head. “Not handling it well. He was in the room with you when you coded. As you can probably guess...the family is very concerned at this point.”

“They're not the only ones,” Zoey confessed. “I mean, I'm not even thirty. I didn't expect that I'd be faced with...my own demise so soon. What is this going to do to Andrew? To Mom and Dad? To Grandma?” Her voice cracked with emotion. “But then at the same time I feel guilty for even thinking about myself. I...I know that eventually Andrew will move on. Maybe he will even find love again. Mom and Dad will heal over time, but there would be no second chance for that little boy. It would be a four year old standing here dead instead of me. I...don't think I could live with that.”

Zoey's words were punctuated by a sudden jolt of energy coursing through her body.

She felt that.

“Wh...what's happening?”

“Your heartbeat. That's what is happening,” Ethan replied with a smile. Zoey felt a tingling sensation encompass her body as a rainbow of sparkles swirled around her. The last thing that she saw was her grandfather's smiling face as he waved goodbye.

“Tell your grandmother that I love her.”

“I will. I love you, Granddad.”

A short while later...

“We were able to get her heartbeat back. It is, however, tenuous at best,” the doctor explained. “We have stabilized her as best as we can, but her body has endured significant trauma, and we don't know how long she was deprived of oxygen when she was trapped. It...doesn't look good, Mr. Goth.”

Andrew gazed through the window at his wife, his eyes brimming with fresh tears. “Can I see her?”

“Yes.”

Zoey was lying in the midst of a tangle of tubes and wires, the plaintive beep of a heart monitor serving as an all-too-clear reminder that her life was dangling by a mere thread. Reverently Andrew brushed a strand of hair away from her face and kissed her on the cheek.

He sat down and took her hand in his, shivering subconsciously at her cold and clammy touch. This was his beloved wife, his childhood best friend, his high school sweetheart, the mother of his two beautiful children. So vibrant and full of life only this morning...and now only barely alive.

“Zo...come back to me,” He pleaded. “I don't want to have to raise our babies alone. They need their mommy. I need their mommy. I...I love you, Zo.”

“I love you too.”

Andrew sat up sharply, his heartbeat racing. Did he just hear...?

“Zoey?”

His wife responded by slowly opening her eyes.

“Sorry I scared you," she softly spoke.

Thank you--I definitely got a bit teary-eyed while writing it as well.

The blackout was accomplished by making a room with flat black walls (using the hex code 000000 for true black) and a black stone floor with no lighting whatsoever. For the ghosts, I already had Ethan as playable in one of my save files...and well...I used MasterController to force-kill Zoey by fire then immediately brought her back into the household. (which I felt terribly guilty for, even if it was just for screenshots!)

Next up: A homecoming, a family reunion, two birthdays, an investigation, and a cheek-pinching great-grandma. (Elder interactions are fun!)

Chapter 61 – Iris's Journal – Healing and Family

Hey all, it's me again. :)

Elly kind of left everyone at a cliffhanger, didn't she? I am pleased to announce that Zoey has made a full and complete recovery. It was touch and go that first night, though. Her heartbeat stopped entirely and we thought we were going to lose her for sure, but miraculously the doctors managed to bring her back.

Much to everyone's surprise she was wide awake and fully coherent by early that next morning.

She came home from the hospital about three weeks later and still needed a lot of TLC. Thankfully Andrew was able to take a few weeks leave to take care of her...which she didn't mind in the slightest.

Hey! Behave yourselves! Zoey is still fragile, y'know?

I probably don't need to say that the twins were glad to have their mommy back. Neither of them would let her out of their sight for days after she got home. Both of them missed Zoey terribly when she was in the hospital. Mom and I tried to keep the two of them occupied as much as possible, but they kept wanting to know where Mommy was.

Zoey's recovery went slowly. It took a long time before she could even walk again, and even longer before she could build her strength back up to where she could carry anything or stand for more than two minutes at a time. That is why, when the twins' birthday rolled around, we weren't just cheering for them. We were cheering for Zoey too.

As she brought Hadrian and then Celestine up to their cakes, I could see the sense of accomplishment in her eyes. Our Zoey was back in full force, and nothing was going to stop her.

But the day ultimately belonged to the children.

And the first thing that Hadrian did was pick up a paintbrush. I guess the whole art thing runs in the family. I wouldn't really know. To me all art still looks like a bunch of squiggles and splats.

(Edit: Iris, he's five—it IS bunch of squiggles and splats. :P - Zoey)

Celestine seems to take after her mother more in that she prefers running around and playing versus hanging out with a paintbrush and canvas. Probably the only thing she loves more than playing tag is talking with her Nana.

Aunt Holly quite enjoys that.

...though I'm not so sure that Cel is too thrilled when she does this.

“Aww, Nana...”

Teasing aside, aunt Holly is doing remarkably well for being over eighty. Her age hasn't slowed her down a single bit, as a matter of fact.

Let's see, what's been going on on our side of the family lately...? Nothing too earth-shattering, really. Marcus and Eugenia are too busy working on their careers to do much of anything else, but imagine Dad's surprise when he found out that his grandson's new wife was in medical school! So far Eugenia is merely an orderly (cleaning bedpans...not exactly a job I'd want) but she is doing very well in her classes and will probably be accepted into the paramedic program by the end of the year.

Dad has taken her under his wing and is personally tutoring her, something which he clearly enjoys.

As far as Marcus is concerned, I really don't know what he is doing, truth be told. He almost never talks about his investigations and is always sneaking around town...

...or hiding in the bushes.

One thing I will say, though, is that they keep themselves busy. Almost too busy. How am I supposed to get grandkids if the two of you are working all of the time?

(Edit: Mom, really? We're 21. We have plenty of time. Patience is a virtue, right? - Marc)

Timmy and I are doing fantastic. Now that everything is finally under control with the family business he has been able to relax a bit and get back into his music.

He's still got it. And he's still hot as ever. Rawr!

Most of our focus right now is on Maddie, who is just a doll and keeps getting more adorable by the day. She's a smart cookie, not unlike her brother...and just adores her daddy.

I'm still a bit dubious about that blasted doll though. Who the heck sends gifts to the granddaughter of a cousin who they haven't even seen in more than five decades? Then again I've heard that grandpa Geoffrey's side of the family is a little strange. (What do you expect from Twinbrook?)

Misgivings aside, I don't dare to take it away from Maddie. She has grown quite attached to the thing.

I have a confession to make. I'm starting to consider quitting law enforcement.  Don't get me wrong, I just love my job, but there are serious dangers to it. I put my life on the line day after day trying to keep the citizens of Sunset Valley safe. I don't know, I guess seeing what almost happened to Zoey really hit too close to home. I don't want Timmy to have to go through what Andrew did...or worse...and I really don't want Maddie to have to face the possibility of having to grow up without her mom.

It's not like we're at all hurting for money, so we can afford it if I do quit. It's just a point of finding something else to do to occupy my time. Sigh...so much to consider over the next few months.

By the way, we finally managed to get Devon to send us some pics of the family. He and Nadia are still as insane lovey as ever. After much deliberation they have finally come to the conclusion that three kids is enough. Maybe they are more sane than I thought...

And so, without further ado:

Isn't she gorgeous? This is Electra, believe it or not. She has turned into such a pretty, elegant girl. Unfortunately she doesn't exactly have the best relationship with my brother. While most teenagers are embarrassed by their parents as a rule, Electra sort of has a reason to be. Mom has been trying to get her to come over to the house more often, but lately she has been wanting to spend her time over at my friend Cassie's place. (You know, Andrew's older sister?)

Cassie's oldest son is about her age. Draw your own conclusions. :P

Next is Angelia, who takes after her parents far too much. While she is pretty sure that the aliens are not out to get them, she is not so certain about the sharks and is therefore scared to death of the water.

Finally we have adorable little Zach, who looks pretty much identical to Devon. He is absolutely fascinated by aliens and would love to meet one someday. The funny part: Devon and Nadia think that he's crazy. :P

Mom and Dad still haven't slowed down. Since my sister graduated they've been to Hidden Springs, China, France (twice!), and are planning an excursion to Sunlit Tides as I type. Even when they are home they are constantly on the go, whether it's their weekly trip to the symphony or visiting my brother or taking in Sunset Valley's nightlife (what little of it there is, at any rate—we just have the two clubs.)

...and they're still lovey-dovey even after over fifty years of marriage. (and I think I need eye bleach now)

You'll never guess who Mom and Dad ran into at Black Ice the other night. Uncle Ian! He's always so busy with his restaurant and his cooking show that we hardly ever see him anymore. (I think the last time was uncle Ethan's funeral, in fact...wow.)

Mom spent a good part of the evening reconnecting with her little brother. As it turns out he's getting ready to retire, just as soon as he can get the new head chef up to speed on things at the restaurant.

And who would happen to be this new chef?

Surprised? Probably not.

Kenji already has big plans for the place, including adding a separate cake shop and sushi bar. Odd, perhaps...but if you know my cousin it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

I suppose that's really about it. Life continues to plod onward as it always does. We'll see what happens with my job...and if my son and his wife decide to take that next step in their marriage.

Three words, Marc: I want grandkids. :P

Hugs always,

Iris

Woah! Your previous chapter with Zoey's 'out of body experience' did move me very deply.
It was almost a relief to read a 'normal' family update after that. Great work, Raia!!!  :D
