Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 55

No, it's not just you. It's that stubble that does it. Not enough to be hairy, but just enough to make him look like a teddy bear.  :P

He is downright handsome. If I ever have the gumption to try a townie decadynasty I will most likely get Cycl0n3 and Emma together. They made one seriously good looking kid. :)

Chapter 55 –  Postcards, Prom, and Pregnancy

Hey there everyone.

It's been a while since I've been back in the writer's chair, not since Zoey graduated high school. I'm still alive and kicking though. Getting around has been a tad bit more difficult lately, but all in all I can't complain too much. Stiff muscles and creaky joints just go with the territory when you're in your late seventies, though I could do without this whole shortness of breath thing when I climb up the stairs.

Meh, it could be worse.

Darlene and Malcolm delayed their travel plans just long enough to greet their brand new grandson, Zachariah Copernicus (don't ask...I have no clue).

Why exactly Devon placed him on the sand to shoot this photo is beyond me. He is quite adorable though, and very well loved by his parents and two older sisters. I'll have to ask Devon if he has any recent photos of Electra and Angelia. They've both grown quite a bit since the last time anyone posted pictures.

Right now my sister and brother-in-law are off on a month-long excursion in France. From the postcard I received today it looks like they're having a grand time:

Hey E,

Having a blast in Champs les Sims. Meeting all sorts of interesting people. So far we've explored an ancient Celtic tomb and are getting ready to visit an old mansion belonging to Malcolm's great-great-uncle. The nectar is fantastic. Will be bringing back a few bottles to share.

Hope all is well. Tell Amaya she'd better be behaving herself for her sister. See you in two weeks!

All the best,

Darlene

P.S. Met a guy who has read all of your books. Pretty cool, huh?

Genuine French nectar, now that does sound delicious. I can't wait to give it a try.

Yes, Amaya is behaving herself...for the most part. There have been a few isolated incidents lately, namely involving Marcus.

He was not terribly amused by this invasion of his personal computer...

...and promptly got Amaya back that next morning by soundly beating her at chess. In four moves.

She was a little peeved.

Truth be told, the two of them are not getting along terribly well of late. Most of the issue seems to be coming from Amaya's end, though Marcus certainly knows how to egg her on. No one knows exactly what happened either, though I suspect it may have something to do with prom night...

Perhaps I should back up and explain things a bit. You may recall Holly mentioning a certain young lady named Eugenia, Judd's step-niece?

It is official: Marcus has a girlfriend, and it completely took him by surprise. He has been over the moon about her for quite some time now, but never thought in a million years that Eugenia would feel the same way about him.

Oh how wrong he was.

“I um...just never...well...thought that you'd like a guy like me...like that.”

“Oh Marc, you're so cute and sweet. Why wouldn't I like a guy like you?”

“I'm...cute? Really—whoa!”

He couldn't really speak much after that. ;)

Fast forward to prom night two weeks ago. Both Marcus and Amaya had their dates for the dance and decided to make a double date out of it. The night started out pleasantly enough for both couples.

But when everyone came home that night it was clear that something was amiss. Marcus and Eugenia were cheerful enough, but Amaya looked more than a little annoyed and would hardly say two words to them. My niece had expected that she and Roman would be voted king and queen, but much to her shock the titles went to Marcus and Eugenia instead.

It would seem that she is a touch jealous.

Teenage drama aside, their photos from the dance have now joined the “prom wall”. It started out fifty years ago when Darlene hung her and Malcolm's photo up near her door, then several years later my brother Ian decided to place his right next to it, and it sort of became a tradition from there.

I noticed something not too long ago that both amused and touched me. With only one exception, everyone who had a date to the prom wound up marrying that person later on. Darlene and Malcolm, Elysia and Judd, Iris and Timothy, Zoey and Andrew...the only exception so far is Kenji.

In his case, though, it was all for the best.

Kenji and his wife are doing quite well. They've been married for a little over a year now and still haven't quite left the honeymoon phase behind.

About six months ago they decided that it was time to leave the nest, something that rather took Elysia and Judd by surprise. Kenji had been making a bit of extra money on the side baking cakes, and between that and what Karina was bringing in from fishing they had saved just enough to buy a place on Water Lily Lane. Ironically enough, it was the same house that Holly and I were eying when we were looking to move out of my parents' place so many years ago.

It was at that point that my daughter and son-in-law decided to give them a late wedding gift—an extra §30,000 to give them a few more options on where to live.

Kenji was dumbfounded. “Dad...are you serious?”

“Completely,” Judd replied with a grin. “We're so proud of you, Ken. Of the both of you. You two have worked very hard to get where you are, and the least we can do is help you get a decent place to live.”

Kenji threw his arms around his father and hugged him. “I can't thank you enough!”

Long story short, my grandson and his wife did a bit of house-hunting and decided on a place a very short distance away: right next door.

It's absolutely perfect. They get the privacy that they crave, and at the same time it's still only a short walk to visit them—one that doesn't involve two flights of stairs to get there. (I mentioned that stairs and I don't really get along right now.) Truthfully, Kenji's timing couldn't possibly have been better. Almost as soon as they moved out Zoey and Andrew began converting their old room...

...into a nursery.

I am very pleased to report that Zoey is expecting. The family practically erupted with excitement at the news.

Especially my beloved wife. :)

Zoey has had a fairly easy time so far, save a nasty bout of morning sickness early on. She was worried at first that Andrew wouldn't be able to be with her for the pregnancy, but to their mutual relief his unit was given a long-term assignment in town, which meant that he wouldn't be going anywhere for at least another year.

They already know the gender of the baby, but much to my (and everyone else's) chagrin they are keeping that bit of knowledge to themselves. Zoey has even gone so far as to keep the nursery under lock and key so no one can see the color scheme. Now that just isn't fair. :P

I'm about to become a great-grandfather. Not only have I had the pleasure of seeing both of my grandchildren grow and prosper, but now I am blessed enough to see my oldest grandchild have a child of her own. It simply blows me away. How did I manage to get so lucky?

I cannot wait to meet him. Or her. Either way, the baby already has a pair of great-grandparents who love them.

Signing out,

Ethan

I just read the past several chapters - what a great story! I'm really looking forward to seeing how it goes. And I am amazed at your 14 sims. The most I've managed so far is 8, but sometimes I'm a control freak. I need to learn to just let some sims autopilot.  ::)

Looking forward to finding out what the baby is.

Marcus ROCKS! I'm totally enamoured of him.
The update where he uncovered the Warehouse business was just awesome.
So happy he found Eugenia! :)
Also, I'm very much looking forward to Zoey's nooboo.
Spectacular updates, and I loved every minute reading (and re-reading) them!  :D

Thank you! I certainly never expected that Marcus and Eugenia would win king and queen--especially Eugenia, since she really does not have that many friends. Given that Amaya's traits include Snob and Dramatic, I figured she would react with a bit of jealousy.

I'm glad you enjoy. :) 14 sims can be a royal pain at times, and it often takes me over an hour to get through even one sim day, but autopilot tasks definitely help. I can leave Malcolm and Ethan to writing, Holly to painting, and Zoey and Andrew to working out while I play with the others, then I can send Marcus to the chat room and Amaya to her drafting table so I can work with Ethan and Holly, and so on. It's a juggle, but it works. :)

I don't know if you remember a comment I made on your story about you inadvertently giving me an idea, but the Warehouse business chapter stemmed from that. :) Marcus has turned into one of my household favorites. He is just a ton of fun to play, quirky and different (though not Insane like his uncle :P).

Finding Eugenia was a serious stroke of luck. There are literally two teenage girls in town at this point other than babysitters and former newspaper girls, one is her, the other is Amaya, so I was sweating it as far as finding a match for Marcus. Her traits are remarkably compatible with our little hacker, including Genius and Excitable (I think her other two are Lucky and Family-Oriented...? I can't remember for sure.) Her birth father is Xander Clavell and her mother is an immigrant townie.

Thank you so much!

Next up: Zoey gives birth...and history repeats itself in a very unpleasant way.

Chapter 56 – A First Meeting, a Final Parting

Today I became a grandmother for the first time. I should be overjoyed. Perhaps I will be, at some point...but not now. Not for a long time. How do you reconcile a day that begins with such joy, and yet by the end of it you are in so much anguish that you can hardly bear it?

My daughter went into labor early this morning.

It took some doing to get Zoey down the two flights of stairs from their attic suite, but Andrew still managed to get her to the hospital in plenty of time. Judd and I followed a short time later and met Bella and Mortimer in the waiting room. When all was said and done we welcomed Celestine Isabella into the world.

And her twin brother, Hadrian Michael.

As it turns out, the reason why they had kept the nursery under lock and key was that they didn't want us to see the two cribs and two baby swings. “We knew it would be twins all along, but we wanted it to be a surprise,” Zoey told me.

Two precious little grandbabies...so beautiful...so perfect.

So loved.

But no one could have possibly imagined the sorrow that was to come mere hours later. I was watching the twins in their swings when I heard my mother's heart-wrenching scream. Never in my life will I forget that sound...nor will I forget the sight that met my eyes when I opened their bedroom door.

No.

I heard the sound of footsteps rapidly approaching and Zoey and Andrew entered the room, quickly followed by my aunt and uncle.

“Granddad?!” Zoey called out, her voice shaking. “No...this can't be happening. Please, not today!” Her tearful plea spoke what was in my own heart. I lost grandpa Nick on the day that Zoey was born, and now that same scenario was playing out again. History was repeating itself in the most cruel, heartbreaking way imaginable.

The air in the room suddenly went cold as the specter of Death made its ghastly presence known. I saw Dad's spirit turn to face him, the slightest hint of a grin playing upon his now ghostly features.

“Hm, I did not expect to see you quite so quickly, Mister Bunch,” the apparition spoke. “It would seem that the affliction that took your father has now claimed you.”

“I thought that's what it was,” Dad replied. His voice sounded hollow, like a mere echo.

“Have you any final words for your loved ones? I can spare a few extra moments. You lessened my workload quite a bit by working in the hospital, the least I can do is give you some time.”

"I...appreciate that. Thank you."

Immediately Dad looked over at Zoey and smiled. “I'm glad that I was able to see you grow up, Zo-zo. You've blossomed into an amazing young lady, and I wish you and Andrew all the best in the world. Enjoy those little babies. Give them lots of hugs and lots of love. I'll watch over them from the other side.” He glanced back at Death. “That is permitted, right?”

“I do believe we have guardian angel positions open.”

“Oh good.” Dad looked at aunt Darlene, who instantly started bawling. “Sis, it's okay.”

“How is it okay?” She cried out. “I...I don't want you to leave!”

“I know. Darlene, you've been an amazing sister to me. I admire you more than you could ever possibly know. Tell the kids that I love them. I'm afraid I won't be able to wait until Iris and Timothy return to tell them personally.”

My aunt could no longer speak through her tears. “We will,” Malcolm finally replied in her stead, his own voice cracking with emotion. “Ethan...I'll miss you, man. You are the brother I never had.”

"Yours is a friendship that I have always treasured..." Dad's voice trailed off and his smile broadened. “My father just told me to thank you for being so good to his daughter over the years. And Darlene...he said he loved the fireworks at your wedding.”

His gaze moved over to me. I could barely even see at this point I was crying so hard. “I'm so proud of you, Elly. You and Judd both. How did I manage to be so lucky as to not only have an amazing daughter, but an equally amazing son-in-law? Keep on living a good life. Elysia, please take care of your mother for me, all right?”

Finally, Dad turned to Mom.

“My love...words cannot express how it pains me that I am leaving you. Loving you has been one of the greatest things in my life. Know that I will always love you, even beyond the grave. Everything will be all right.”

“How...am I supposed to live without you?”

“Knowing that I am only a breath away. I will never truly leave you. And when some day we meet again...I will hold you in my arms once more. I love you, Holly...always and forever. Never, ever forget that.”

At that point he turned back to the specter. “I think...I am ready.”

“Very well. ”

An instant later his spirit faded into nothingness. My daddy was gone...forever.

Mom gazed directly at Death, tears streaming from her eyes. “How I wish that you could take me as well.”

The apparition shook his head. “You know that I cannot. That is against the rules. Every life has its beginning, and every life will one day meet its end. I can think of two very good reasons why you are still needed here, two reasons that are currently napping in the pair of swings outside this room.” He paused. “One day you and I will meet again on professional terms, but until then...keep living the life that has been given to you.”

The specter vanished, leaving behind a trace of black mist...and a gilded urn.

I am numb. I can't believe it. He's gone. My father...my daddy...is dead. I just want to scream. I just want to cry until I can't possibly cry another tear.

Tonight Zoey and Andrew must put their little ones to bed knowing that they will never get the chance to know the amazing man that was their great-grandfather.

Tonight my aunt must cope with losing her favorite brother, a man who she has idolized since childhood. Tonight her husband must reconcile the loss of his best friend, his co-worker, his brother in every way but by blood.

But my heart weeps most for my mother.

Tonight she sleeps alone for the first time in decades, without my father's warm embrace, without his reassuring voice. The other side of the bed is silent and cold...and woefully empty.

Oh Dad...why did you have to say goodbye so soon?
--

(A/N: I had thought that my game had finally given up on the whole “sim dies on a relative's birthday” thing. Birthdays have come and gone with little pain, and now the one time it happens again...it's the worst possible case.

He is the first of the original teens to die, and there are still a handful of YAs left. He passed one day after the end of the elder lifespan. Far...far too early.

And I'm heartbroken.  :'()

:'( Poor Ethan. I know he'd led a full life, and was surrounded by family, but he was still too young!

I haven't caught up on this one for a while, but I'm glad I have. Reading about Geoffrey's death was surprisingly upsetting to me (and made me feel really guilty). Malcolm is great, I hope he's around for ages.

But mostly... poor Holly :'(

Thankfully, I have a full box of tissues at my computer at all times... I definitely needed them after reading this.

I needed them while writing it. :( My husband was wondering why I was so emotional. I told him I was writing a death scene, and he understood (he also dabbles in writing as a hobby).

This was such a sad but beautiful update. Poor Holly. :(

Thanks. What is worse--Holly and Ethan were being romantic at the time. I just left them there with the Massage action in queue then went off to check on the nooboos...then came the dreaded screen pan.

When I read the title of this I knew what this was about.
Welcome to the twins, but goodbye Ethan.  :'(

I gave Zoey the Fertility Treatment lifetime reward and hoped that it wouldn't be triplets. :P

Given that Holly is a vegetarian I always knew Ethan would go first...just not so quickly.

Ethan's death scene wasn't too sad because he was ready but still R.I.P Ethan Bunch

Ready enough, I suppose. He did shake Grim's hand, though the graphics glitched at that point so I didn't take a screencap. I'm seriously going to miss playing him. Ethan remains one of my favorite original townies. At least, though, I can always go back to the beginning and play him as a teen again. :P

Way too young. I didn't even realize that they could die that quickly after the end of the elder lifespan. As I mentioned, there are still some of the original YA townies left: Leighton, Christopher, Monika, Madison, Ayesha, and Blair. Ethan was the first teen to die, and four sim days further on he is still the only one. I wonder if something glitched.

Hehe...I've always seen Geoffrey as a family man, the guy taking a back seat to his wife's ambitions while she wore the proverbial pants in the family. Admittedly though, it's interesting to see a different take on him. ;)

I hope Malcolm is around for a good long while too! He has grown into a favorite of mine. Slim him down a touch and he's downright handsome, actually. :)

Poor Holly...  :'( I'll miss Ethan. He was too young! Why couldn't he have lived to the point where most dynasty spouses do?

I don't get it either. :( At least, though, he got to meet his great-grandkids.

Chapter 57 – Iris's Journal – Carry On

Let me come right out and say it: I just don't handle grief very well.

To be honest I've never really had to deal with it before. I didn't really know grandma Nancy. I knew grandpa Geoffrey, but we weren't nearly as close as he was with my brother. This whole thing with uncle Ethan though...it's totally thrown me for a loop.

It just doesn't make sense.

Timmy and I were at the pub with Wes and Cassie when I got the call from Dad. At first I was just dumbstruck. It didn't even seem possible. I mean, the man wasn't even eighty for crying out loud. You don't expect someone to die that young, least of all someone who had hardly ever been sick a day in his life. He exercised and ate healthy (with aunt Holly doing most of the cooking who wouldn't?), so what gives?

Mom said it was a heart attack that took him, same as grandpa Jack.

I don't get it. Dad said that sometimes we're just not meant to understand. This coming from someone where the pursuit of knowledge and understanding has been a major part of his existence...?

Sigh.

Uncle Ethan's funeral was hard. Harder than I thought it would be, actually. Just the finality of it all, seeing my uncle's stone there beside my grandparents, seeing my cousin in tears, seeing aunt Holly looking utterly bereft.

I'm not one for public crying. I don't like allowing myself to be so vulnerable, even among loved ones.

But I cried. I couldn't help it. It surprised the heck out of Timmy, that's for sure. He would hardly let me out of his sight for the rest of the day. (Not that I minded...)

Everyone is managing as best they can. There has been a lot of paging through old photo albums and a lot of reminiscing, and because this is uncle Ethan that we're talking about, a lot of smiles. I know this might sound overly sappy coming from me...but he really was an amazing man. He always knew how to make Mom smile, even on her worst of days...

...make Elysia laugh...

...be a listening ear for Dad when grandma Nancy was being difficult...

...and help Zoey to be the best she could be.

Gosh I miss him.

I can't even begin to imagine what aunt Holly must be going through, though.

He was my uncle, my mom's brother, my dad's best friend...but uncle Ethan was her husband. Her lover, her constant companion of more than sixty years. How do you cope with losing your everything?

Lately she has been throwing herself into her artwork. There is something therapeutic, so they say, about putting your emotions to canvas. Supposedly some of the greatest works ever painted have been done in times of grief.

This one is entitled “The Great Beyond”, so named when Elly looked at it and said “I wonder if that's what Heaven looks like.” I dunno...to me it just looks like a swirl of pastel colors, but then again I was never much into art.

Mostly, though, aunt Holly dotes on her great-grandchildren. Celestine and Hadrian are the lights of her life.

Provided of course that they are not already being monopolized by Elly.

Or Judd.

I feel sort of bad for Zoey. They're her own kids and she hardly gets a chance to be with them. She doesn't mind sharing though, especially since Andrew is off on assignment for the next few months. Juggling twins must be quite the chore. No offense, Zo-zo, but I'm glad it's you and not me. :P

Pretty soon there will be another new baby for Holly and Elysia to fawn over.

Karina is pregnant. :) Kenji told us about three weeks after uncle Ethan's funeral. In the midst of all that sadness it was nice to have a bit of good news...and nice to see aunt Holly smile.

Anyway, in other news, about three weeks ago we had a break-in at the house.

The burglars around here are not terribly bright, apparently. I would have thought by now that they would have known that a cop and a former forensic scientist live here. Not to mention a firefighter and a soldier.

Come to think of it, this really is a lousy house to try and rob.

It was more of an annoyance than anything else. The twins weren't even awakened by the burglar alarm, amazingly enough...but the break-in did reveal something rather interesting.

Why exactly was my son's girlfriend here? And in her nightclothes, no less?

Marcus explained that they lost track of time while watching the stars. By the time they realized what time it was it was too late to send Eugenia home without being caught by curfew enforcement, so they decided that it would be best for her to spend the night in Devon's old room.

I'm not so sure that I buy it. Not that Marcus has ever given me any reason to distrust him, but I know teenage hormones. Mom and Dad would have probably grounded me for life if they had known some of the things...never mind.

(Edit: I don't even want to know... - Mom)

Has anyone mentioned that he's following in my footsteps? Not law enforcement, no...but Marcus has taken up the martial arts.

So far I am seriously impressed. While he's not quite there as far as board breaking is concerned, he has managed to grasp the elusive concept of Zeneport.

(So long as he doesn't Zeneport into the bathroom while his girlfriend is taking a shower, we're good. Otherwise, I might have to smack him...)

I just can't believe that he will be eighteen in less than a year. Don't start thinking that I'm getting all mushy about my son growing up, though. It's just hard to pretend that you're younger than you are when you have a grown child. :P

It's only him getting older, not me. Yeah, that's it.

(Edit: You just keep right on thinking that, Mom. ;) - Marc)

(Another Edit: Wait, when did Marc get the password? - Darlene)

(Yet Another Edit: Since when have I ever needed a password? - Marc)

Well, I suppose I ought to sign off. Timmy is planning a nice romantic evening out and I probably should get ready. We'll be okay in the long run, I think.. This is a resilient family, and while it hurts immensely that uncle Ethan is no longer here, I know we will find a way to carry on. He would have wanted it that way, knowing him.

Cheers,

Iris
