Hail, Raia!
I'm so happy that Andrew and Zoey are 'an item'.
Hehehe! I laughed louder and louder when the family 'discovered' them one by one.
And how nice of Iris to apologize.
Now then... Marcus Landgraab! His grandfather Cycl0n3Sw0rd would have been proud of him (and maybe a little jealous too).
Wonderful writing!  ;D

Wonderful writing, I love the format you have chosen for this update. Yay to Andrew and Zoey! Hmm... I wonder what will come out of Marcus' plans.

What an adorable couple! Aww!
Aww.. young love are so cute! I love the update. Fantastic writing. :)

I was really hoping that I could get things to work out between the two. I was pleasantly surprised when Andrew grew up to find that he had gained another matching trait to Zoey (both were already Vegetarian, and he gained the Loves the Outdoors trait that Zoey had from birth!).

And he's pretty adorable, actually. Further proof that Mortimer and Bella's genes work very well together. :)

And thanks!

Wonderful writing, I love the format you have chosen for this update. Yay to Andrew and Zoey! Hmm... I wonder what will come out of Marcus' plans.

Originally I wanted to incorporate this into a standard family blog style update (Holly is up next) but the more I wrote the more I realized that it just wouldn't be appropriate from a single person's point of view. That and this bit was quite a bit longer than most and deserved a chapter in its own right.

Terrific update.  Looking forward to hearing more of Marcus's amazing breakthrough.

Marcus is going to be fun to play, I think. His traits (randomized) were Excitable and Genius at birth, then Computer Whiz when he aged up to child. He autonomously chats online when I'm not watching him, which plays a rather significant role in his "breakthough". ;)

Hail, Raia!
I'm so happy that Andrew and Zoey are 'an item'.

Wonderful writing!  ;D

I am too! I love the Goth family and Andrew is just too cute.

I have to say, I am glad that you posted your update before I posted mine. That definitely helped me figure out how to write Marcus's part. :) Actually, Cycl0n3 is still alive and kicking at this point, and so is Emma. Neither of them have any sort of relationship with their grandson though...

Thank you! Other than a few sticking points the chapter more or less wrote itself. I had a lot of fun with this writing style.

Up next: A teen birthday, a minor emergency, and much ado about Nadia. Thanks so much, and I wish all of you the best of holidays. Merry Christmas.  ;D

EDIT: And prom! How could I forget prom? And who is the dark-haired girl that suddenly has Kenji's attention?

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 49

Chapter 49 – Much Ado About Grandchildren

Greetings once again, my friends. It has indeed been a long time since last I have written, and I assure you that I have kept myself quite busy. Just because I am older does not mean that I have slowed down—far from it, to be sure.

After years of living in a house full of musicians I have finally decided to take up an instrument of my own. Elly has been kind enough to give me guitar lessons, and I have to say I'm starting to get the hang of it. The kids are even starting to include me in their jam sessions.

Including the newest musician in the family.

My grandson turned thirteen a little while back and immediately took to the drums. Kenji seems to have a natural knack for music, much like his parents. And, much like his parents, he has this amusing penchant for early morning practice sessions in the upstairs foyer.

“Ken, you do realize that it's eight in the morning, right?”

“Yeah.”

“On a Sunday.”

“Yeah.” He paused. “I woke you and Mom up, didn't I?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Sorry.”

Ethan and I were already awake and we heard the entire conversation from our room. We just kind of looked at each other and laughed. “Payback,” both of us said at the exact same time.

Kenji started high school at the winter semester, and all of us were rather amazed that he managed to get a date in time for the formal dance less than two months later.

This is Letitia Hart, my dear friend Bebe's daughter, and one of Zoey's best friends. The two of them went to the dance more as friends, though Kenji seems quite smitten with her. That she agreed to go to prom with him came as somewhat of a shock to Zoey, but she didn't seem to mind too much. My granddaughter was far too preoccupied with her own prom date to give it much thought.

Say hello to the newly-crowned prom king and queen. :)

When Zoey confessed to me that she and Andrew were seeing each other I was not in the least bit surprised. I don't know why, but there is just something about the two of them together, something that just seems so...right, for lack of a better term. As my love once said about me, there is far more than mere physical attraction at work here. Zoey and Andrew have a depth to their relationship that belies their young age. Truly, it is a beautiful thing.

The two of them will graduate in a little bit less than a year. Something tells me that there will be wedding bells within three.

(Edit: Mom, I'm already having a hard enough time with my little girl growing up, and now you mention that? I'm going to cry! - Elysia)

To think that Ethan and I were that young once. :)

My husband gave us a bit of a scare a few months ago. You may recall Iris mentioning that he was spending a lot of time jumping on the trampoline. Well...he and the trampoline had a bit of a disagreement. One dislocated shoulder, a badly broken ankle, and a trip to the emergency room later and he has sworn off of the thing for good. Ethan was back on his feet within two months, but the incident has made it so he needs a cane to help him walk.

Fortunately he is taking it in stride, quite literally. (I know, that was a horrendous pun.)

Other than that small setback retirement has definitely served Ethan well. At first he wasn't sure what he was going to do with himself all day, but he has definitely found ways to occupy his time.

Well, more than just that. :) Ethan has taken up writing as a hobby and has actually published his first novel, a science fiction piece called “Rise of the Scarlet Star” (§6.50 at Divisadero Budget Books...not that I'm advertising or anything). Right now he is working on a sequel, and if it turns out as well as this last one he might consider making it into a series.

The only problem is that now he is competing with his great-nephew for computer time.

It's usually not so bad, especially since Marcus is at school all day, and he will always log off if asked. The only problem is that now he has developed a habit of staying up ridiculously late chatting online. Nobody knew what was going on until Malcolm caught him very late one Friday night...or rather, very early Saturday morning.

“Aren't you supposed to be in bed, young man?”

Marcus nearly jumped out of his chair. “H...hi, papa. I was just chatting online with a friend of mine.”

“At two in the morning?”

“He's in another dimension, so it's actually in the afternoon for him.”

Malcolm quirked an eyebrow. “Another...dimension?”

I'm not even going to pretend like I understand what was going on. Something about parallel worlds and Marcus finding a way to establish communication through a universal link between them, and I believe that there are aliens involved in the mix somewhere. Malcolm said it all sounded very unreal, though the evidence that his grandson showed him was rather compelling, at least.

“Whatever you do, promise me that you won't show this to your uncle Devon,” Malcolm warned him. “You know how he feels about aliens.”

“I promise. I'm kinda keeping things secret anyway, at least for now,” was Marcus's response. “I don't want to compromise the Sterlings' mission.”

“Just go to bed.”

My brother-in-law's words to Marcus were indeed wise; Devon is still quite obsessed with aliens and is convinced that they are bent on invading Sunset Valley. He has started a campaign to rid the town of all telescopes and meteorites, items which he claims “attracts them like ants to a picnic”. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how that little endeavor is going. Most people in town already know that my nephew is a few violins short of an orchestra.

Devon is Devon, he is the way he is, and quirky as he may be we love him dearly for it. :)

When he is not spending time with Nadia or blowing things up (another sordid tale entirely) he is at the workbench, coming up with all sorts of bizarre—and I daresay fascinating—inventions. Devon has more or less perfected his line of robotic toys and is making quite a tidy profit.

Why the sudden interest in children's toys?

Funny you should ask. :)

Malcolm and Darlene are very excited at the idea of becoming grandparents for a second time. Iris's response, however, was a bit more subdued. I think her exact words were “I fear for the future of Simanity” or something along those lines.

Regardless, Devon and Nadia are happy, and no one could ask for more than that.

All in all this has been a positive year for the family. I look forward to meeting my new great-nephew or great-niece when the time comes, and we are already making plans for Zoey's graduation. There is much to look forward to in the next several months, that much is for certain.

Until next I write, wishing you all the best.

Holly

Fabulous update!  I think Letitia will make a nice addition to the stragglers and lost souls Holly has nurtured over the years ;)

And two insane parents don't necessary make insane children - Bebe Hart is testimony to that!

Holly looks cool playing the guitar and I do love her updates.
Letitia is a wonderful surprise. I can't think of another dimension where Bebe and Stiles fell in love.
Ethan looks quite dapper with his stick. I like the title of his book!
Oh! Marcus has made contact and covered quite some ground... *applause*
The thought 'aliens' are involved is totally plausible and hilarious at the same time. I love it!
Devon is too cute making toys in his slippers. I bet, he'll make a wonderful dad.
Marvellous!  :D

Maybe the baby will be completely normal, regardless of who it's parents are,
or it will be completely insane  . . .

The household is indeed a sanctuary for stragglers. I fully planned to move Malcolm and Darlene out after establishing their relationship, much as I did with Morty and Bella, but I found myself unable to let them go. Malcolm has grown into a favorite of mine...and he'll be an elder soon! <whimper>

Oh so true about Bebe. Insanity merely skipped a generation though--her other child Irwin has the Insane trait.

A bit of a spoiler though...Letitia isn't quite what she seems.

Thank you so much for commenting!

Thanks so much, SimBlip.

Honestly, I rather got tired of having Holly paint all day. She's too sweet of a character to be glued to an easel.

Bebe, the poor dear, has had very poor luck in the romance department. She was engaged to Parker, they broke up, then she dated Jared Frio, then dated Stiles (and had twins, Letitia and Irwin), then was engaged to Dustin after Iliana passed away, Dustin passed, then she started dating an immigrant townie named Lincoln Locklear, whom I think she is engaged to at the moment.

I tried out both Holly and Ethan with a cane to see how they looked. Holly looked rather...sad, but with the "Southern Gentleman" walk Ethan looks quite dignified. I just needed an excuse to give him the cane. ;)

It's been a bit more than a year, Sim-time, since Zoey's entry, so Marcus has had plenty of time to improve on his hacking/programming prowess.

Devon is just cute period. And so far, yes he is. :)

Nooboo!

Well, I will say that the baby didn't get the Insane trait at birth. We shall see what the future holds though. I've been randomizing traits for the most part since Iris was born (though I am choosing the final adult traits).

Next up: Another bittersweet year. Birth, death, joy, sorrow, and every emotion in between. Zoey graduates and chooses her vocation, Kenji learns a painful truth, Devon and Nadia welcome their new baby, and the family loses someone very close.

I have about two more chapters worth of material before I'm in uncharted territory, so I'd better get simming. :) Thanks again for reading!

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 50
« Reply #325 on: December 31, 2012, 03:45:07 PM »
Chapter 50 – Bittersweet Symphony

Shortly after my father passed away Mom told me that “Life has no rhyme or reason to it sometimes. It just is.”

In light of what has happened this year, I daresay that truer words were never spoken.

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of a very dear friend and mentor. We lost Geoffrey not far into the new year. He made it just past his ninety-fifth birthday and was still in near-perfect health when death came to call, and while no one was terribly surprised...it was still sad to see him go.

Geoffrey left this world in a rather memorable fashion, though. It is not terribly often when you see a nonagenarian busting moves on the dance floor on the night of his passing. And out-maneuvering dancers less than half his age, I might add.

That Malcolm and Darlene were there when the time came was mere coincidence, and a rather fortuitous one. They originally planned to stay home that Friday night, but Elly had convinced them at the last minute to accompany her and Judd to the dance club. Little did any of them realize that their night of fun and socialization would end quite like this.

It was a heart-wrenching scene.

“So, I take it you're not about to let me hang around for another two months so I can meet my great-granddaughter?”

“'Fraid not,” the apparition spoke. “Your wife has been badgering me constantly asking when you'd be arriving. Now is my chance to finally get her off of my back.”

“Fair enough I guess,” Geoffrey replied. He glanced over at Malcolm and smiled. “Tell the kids I love them, okay? And give the baby a hug from me when she arrives.”

And with those words he was gone. The very last thing that faded from view was his smile, still warm and genuine, still compassionate and kind as the good doctor had always been. Rest in peace, my friend. This world is a better place for your having lived in it.

The family dealt with their grief as best they could. Malcolm had known that this day would be coming sooner rather than later, and was surprisingly at peace with it. His father lived a good long life and had no regrets. He had the pleasure of knowing all three of his grandchildren as well as his first great-grandchild.

Out of everyone, though, it was Devon who took it the hardest.

Devon truly adored his grandfather, and it hurt him to no end that he would never get the chance to meet the new baby. I think the only thing that held him together was the fact that he was about to become a father, and that his wife needed him. It was quite possibly the most down-to-earth that I have ever seen him in all of his twenty-some years.

Nadia's due date was a little less than two months later and labor began right on schedule. I have to hand it to her; she handled the pain exceedingly well. Almost...too well.

Devon on the other hand was in sheer panic.

“Gaaahh! It's...it's a baby! Nadia's going to pop!”

Once Devon had finally calmed down enough to think coherently (at least by Devon standards) he managed to drive his wife to the hospital, where a few hours later they welcomed Electra Penelope into the world. Seven pounds, six ounces of bubbly cuteness with a hint of blonde peachfuzz atop her head.

Devon was beside himself as he held her for the first time. “Hey there little girl. I...I guess I'm your daddy, huh? I hope you don't mind.”

Electra cooed in response. I could have sworn that Devon had tears in his eyes.

“I don't know what to do yet. You're a bit different than scrap metal and wire and I can't exactly use a blowtorch around you.” He gently took her little hand in his. “But your mom and I will do everything that we can to keep you safe from aliens. You don't have to ever be afraid.”

Coming from Devon...that was the sweetest thing I think I've ever heard.

Everyone in the house was lining up to meet and cuddle with the new baby, but priority was, of course, given to a very excited grandma.

I asked Elly if she and Judd were planning on having any more, but she adamantly shook her head. “I'm over forty and two is enough, thanks.”

Drat. I suppose then I'll just have to wait for...

...never mind.

My two grandkids are doing quite well. Well, mostly. Kenji went through a bit of a rough spot earlier this year. It has mostly blown over now, but he was pretty down for a good couple of months.

He came home from school one afternoon looking very distraught. I asked him what was going on, but he refused to talk, instead heading straight to his room and shutting the door. It was only after Zoey came home later that we found out what had happened. He had made the painful discovery during lunch break that Letitia was cheating on him. To make it worse, when Kenji confronted her, she rubbed salt into the wound by insulting his age and calling him a “child”.

Kenji cried himself to sleep that night. Never have I seen him so despondent.

And never have I seen Zoey so angry. My granddaughter was ready to spit nails when she found out that not only did someone have the audacity to cheat on her little brother, but that someone happened to be her so-called best friend. The ensuing conversation between her and Letitia was not pleasant to say the least. She lost a friend that day, but the relationship between her and Kenji is closer than ever.

Slowly everything started calming down. I took the liberty of reminding him that I didn't even meet his grandmother until we were both seniors in high school, and his other grandparents were in their late twenties before they started dating. He seemed to take some comfort from that.

Too soon, the time came for us to celebrate a very special birthday. I say too soon because it's still hard for me to believe that Zoey is eighteen. She wanted to have her birthday party outside, and as luck would have it the evening was cool and comfortable. As you can imagine though, it was a touch on the chaotic side.

She refuses to say what she wished for last night, but Holly and I think we have a good idea. :) How is it that my little granddaughter is already a young adult, ready to take on the world? And why on earth am I crying? I guess I've gotten sappy in my old age.

Today was her graduation day and the family tradition continued. Zoey made valedictorian, barely ousting Andrew from the top spot by mere hundredths of a point (sound familiar?)

Her classmates voted her Most Likely to Save the World—an appropriate distinction for someone who intends on becoming a firefighter. Zoey will start at the academy in a bit less than a month. She went to the station for her first orientation meeting and met the fire captain—none other than my little brother Arlo.

Zoey is quite excited, though a bit nervous at the same time. At present though, the academy is the last thing on her mind.

Several months ago Andrew revealed his intentions to join the military. Thanks to family connections he will be able to stay in Sunset Valley, however he will have to attend boot camp and basic training in another town. He leaves for Twinbrook tomorrow morning at 06:00. Both of them knew that this was coming, but I don't think that either of them really wanted to think about it. Andrew will be away for six months. Six months that they will have to spend apart when they rarely spend a day away from one another.

If I know Zoey, she will manage well enough. If anything, she has her own job training to keep her busy. Arlo already told me that he plans to work her hard. “Just because she's family doesn't mean I'm giving her any sort of special treatment. She needs to prove herself just like everyone else.” I told him that Zoey wouldn't want it any differently.

Hers will be his last training class, as my little brother will be turning sixty-five in a couple of months and plans to retire shortly thereafter.

As if I didn't feel old enough before.

Sigh...

---

(A/N: I found out the hard way that Letitia has both the Commitment Issues and Inappropriate traits to go along with her Dramatic and Flirty traits. :( I was glancing around town and saw her canoodling in the park with Hector Alvi (youngest son of Miraj and Kaylynn) and had Kenji break it off from there. It was just as well, since she is Zoey's age and was just about to have her YA birthday.

Don't worry about Kenji though. Trust me. :)

That pic toward the beginning with Mortimer and the bartender? The girl on the far left is full townie blood, believe it or not. She is Sharonda Ursine, daughter of Jodi Ursine and Ronny Keaton, who were the two unborn babies from the beginning of the game. Pretty cool, no?

Anyway, thanks much for reading! I'm really looking forward to this next chapter. ;D)

Welcome Electra! I thought it was adorable when Devon said, 'You're a bit different than scrap metal and wire and I can't exactly use a blowtorch around you.'
Happy birthday Zoey! Poor girl having to be away from her Boy Friend for so long.
RIP Geoffry, Devon was so close to him  :'(.

Great update.  Bittersweet is very apt.

RIP Geoffrey Landgraab, you are an icon.

I love the name Electra for Devon's baby.  What better name for the child of such an eccentric inventor.  Loooooove it!

I'm late with this reply because I got confused.
The first picture scared the hell out of me. At first, I thought Ethan had died!
It's good to know that he is the one who writes this update. Thank you for answering my PM, Raia. His comment about Arlo totally escaped me the first two times I read your post (my bad).

R.I.P. Geoffrey. There is no doubt that he left a huge gap behind, but... he went in style!
Malcolm does him proud. To see him console the others was sad, but very endearing.
I felt so touched by Devon: “Hey there little girl. I...I guess I'm your daddy, huh? I hope you don't mind.”
I wish they had a smiley icon with a smile and a tear for that.
Aw! Kenji... that's hard to deal with at any age, let alone, his.
I'm happy, yet sad for Zoey and Andrew, but their love can withstand the test of time and their future looks bright.

You have a wonderful way of conveying emotions, Raia. This story is full of soul. :)
