Congrats on the nooboos! The House looks huge! Is it hard to manage all of the sims in a house so big?

Congratulations to the family. When you said, "and his ever-so-slightly younger aunt, Amaya Grace," I immediately thought about Modern Family.  ;D Wow, that is one humongous house! I can't imagine the lag you must've experienced before you upgraded your computer. So, how many people are in your household at the moment?

DS Ben Jones: I appreciated your trust over the Masons thing.
DCI Tom Barnaby: Trust, Jones, is something hard to win, easy to lose, and never to be taken lightly.
Jones: William Shakespeare, sir?
Barnaby: No! Thomas Barnaby.

Thanks. :) The house has been a work-in-progress since I moved Ethan and Holly there back when they were first starting out. At first it only had the ground and upper floors, then I moved Darlene in, then when Elly came around I added the basement and moved Darlene down there. Then as more and more people came and went I fleshed out the basement with more rooms around a central entertainment area. Before the two babies came it was a rather cramped; I had Zoey and Kenji sharing a small attic room and no space for nooboos.

I think I have enough space now, though. :P

Congrats on the nooboos! The House looks huge! Is it hard to manage all of the sims in a house so big?

Managing that many sims is a multi-tasking nightmare at times, but fortunately most of them are either at school or at work during the week, so that lessens the load. Plus, I can just leave Holly to paint to her heart's content, and Judd just autonomously plays one of his instruments most of the time.

Oh yeah, the lag was ugly. The game kept freezing every 30 sim minutes or so, give or take.

Let's see, we have Ethan and Holly, Darlene and Malcolm, Elysia and Judd, Iris and Timothy, Devon, Zoey, Kenji, Marcus, and Amaya. Thirteen sims in the house, though that I can guarantee will increase relatively soon. I'm not having anyone move out just yet. I'm waiting for a couple of plot devices to take place first. :)

Thanks all. :)

Yippeeee! Iris and Timothy are staying!
So excited with Marcus and Amaya (such a beautiful name!) and the extension to the house (awesome).
You've worked hard to make your Simmies happy, Raia. That gets my vote every time!!!  ;D

Thanks. :) I'm just as excited that I was able to keep them! That bit that I played without them seemed...wrong somehow. I'm glad I was able to go back and make it work, and it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would to catch back up.

And now...onward!

Chapter 45 – Growing Up

It seems that our house wasn't the only one to have a baby boom. Judd and I ran into our old friend Dallas the other day, and he has a son of his own. Friends, please give a warm welcome to Darin Steel. What a cutie!

On a much more somber note, we were dealt a very hard blow late last year. Judd and I were getting ready to go out for dinner one Friday night when he got a tearful phone call from his father. Zelda had just been rushed to the emergency room, and it wasn't looking good. We quickly scrapped our plans and met Leighton at the hospital.

He looked utterly lost.

Sadly, we lost Zelda that next morning. Judd was absolutely devastated. Not only was she his mother, but his co-worker, his musical inspiration. I don't think I've ever seen him cry before...not like that. It hurt to see him in so much pain.

That was when it hit me. One of the agonies of growing up...growing older...is knowing that someday you will lose those whom you love so dearly. I spent a lot of time after that just being with my own mother. She and Dad are still relatively young, just barely into their sixties, and I know that they still have many good years left ahead of them. But still...it won't be forever.

Regardless, I don't think there is a single sim out there who wouldn't benefit from extra time with their moms. Er well, I suppose that my own mother would have been an exception. And maybe uncle Malcolm as well...and Timothy doesn't really get along with either of his parents.

There goes that theory.

I'm certainly enjoying being with my kids. Zoey and Kenji are so much fun it's almost ridiculous.

My gosh, Kenji really does look like his daddy.

He received a toy oven as a birthday present from uncle Ian, and he has been practically obsessed with the thing ever since. It's almost embarrassing to admit that he makes better cookies than I do.

He practically idolizes his great uncle and loves watching his cooking show. I'm starting to think that Kenji just might follow in his footsteps. Who knows though. He still has plenty of time to figure that out, and right now I'm content with him being a happy, playful kid.

Zoey is just a ball of energy and constantly on the go. One moment she is outside playing in the back yard, the next she is chatting on the phone with one of her friends, then a short while later she is playing video games on the couch or hitting the chess table.

It doesn't matter how busy she gets though; Zoey always has time for a bedtime story with grandma. They share a very special bond with one another, and for that I am very grateful. I still remember the times that I got to spend with grandma Judy way back when. They were very special to me...and I am glad that Zoey is able to experience the same.

I can't believe that she will be hitting her teenage years soon. Where has the time gone?

Speaking of birthdays, we had a joint party for Marcus and Amaya for their first birthday...the photos from which seem to have disappeared from my camera's memory card. That kind of has me hacked, actually, because I also lost the photos from Zoey's badging ceremony for scouts. Devon, have you been tinkering with my camera again?

Anyway, back to the birthdays.

Amaya is a doll. She looks just like her mother, but appears to have inherited her grandpa Geoffrey's dusty blonde locks.

And wouldn't you know it, Marcus looks just like his daddy. Isn't he just precious?

They weren't the only ones to have a special birthday in the past few months. My up-until-recently youngest cousin finally broke free from the yoke of childhood with a resounding bang.

In typical Devon fashion, he celebrated completely by himself. Then he promptly went out and managed to get himself arrested for damaging public property. You won't believe what he did to the junkyard.

What was even more awkward was that it was Iris who made the arrest. He was let off with a warning and a hefty fine, but needless to say things were still a bit tense between the two of them for a while. I will give Devon credit though; it is not likely that anyone will forget his eighteenth birthday anytime soon.

My cousin had one other surprise up his sleeve, this one probably more shocking than the last: He is actually dating someone.

Her name is Nadia Cope. I vaguely recall her running the local paper route back when she was a youngster, and not too long ago I saw her name on a list of applicants for an internship at the lab. She turned into a very pretty young lady.

A pretty crazy young lady. I guess there really is a match for everyone in this world.

So what does the future hold? That is anyone's guess. Will we be looking forward to a wedding? Perhaps. One thing I will say, though...this next couple of years is bound to be interesting.

Poor Judd! It must have been doubly hard for him to lose his mum.
The kiddies all had me smile. And Devon... well, he's just priceless!  ;D

Here's the irony: that screencap of Leighton in front of the hospital was taken the night before I got the notification that Zelda was dying. It's almost as if he knew...

The toddlers are super cute! I haven't yet seen them as children yet, though that is coming quickly. I think I have one sim day before they both age up in my current gameplay.

Poor Judd! It must have been doubly hard for him to lose his mum.
The kiddies all had me smile. And Devon... well, he's just priceless!  ;D

I have the story progression mod set to where the Mourning moodlet is perpetuated through all family members (not just household) who are Friends or better with the sim in question, just for a bit of added realism. He really was miserable, actually. I couldn't get Judd and Elly to be romantic hardly at all during those two days; he would always randomly stop and start bawling. It was so sad to watch. :(

Sim kids are just fun, period. :P

And so is Devon. He is the first Insane sim that I have played and he is a ball of fun. I never know what he will do or what he will wear doing it.

May you rest in peace, Zelda. Devon's birthday is indeed one to remember.  :)

Devon has barely even begun to shine. :D

Next up: Let's see how many birthdays I can cram into one update. (Seriously...five sims aging up within the span of four sim days.) Plus, more with Devon and Nadia, toddler playtime, and Elysia laments the onslaught of wrinkles. With any luck I will get the next update out sometime tomorrow, provided I'm awake enough to write. I'm in the middle of transitioning from being on night shift for the past 20 months to an early day shift...so I'm a wee bit on the tired side. :P

Thank you all so very much for reading! Seriously, I greatly appreciate it!

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 46
« Reply #281 on: December 11, 2012, 12:32:51 AM »
Chapter 46 – Age is Just a Number, Right?

My daughter was right on one thing; these past couple of years have been rather eventful.

Why yes...I have gotten a bit older. It's the hair, right? ;)

Shortly after we found out that Devon was dating he approached Malcolm about the prospect of having Nadia move in with us. At first we were all rather skeptical; they had only been seeing each other for a couple of months, and we weren't exactly sure where their relationship was headed at that point. Malcolm told him to give it a few more months, and then if they were still sure of their relationship, then yes, Nadia could move in.

Long story short, Nadia Cope moved in three months later and is now sharing Devon's room. She was very grateful for the invitation and seems to go out of her way to help out around the house whenever she can, which has already earned her a few points as far as Elysia is concerned.

My goofball of a grandson welcomed her in his own special way.

They do seem quite happy together, I must admit. I think that Devon really needed someone like her in his life. It's almost as if she has made him a bit more sane.

Or...not.

While all of this was going on we were getting ready to usher in the beginning of Zoey's teenage years. Everyone was excited, especially Zoey. She had done well in elementary and middle school and was more than ready to tackle high school head-on.

Happy birthday, sweetheart.

She has turned into a beautiful young lady, not unlike her own mother. And yet, Zoey is very different. Where Elysia is music-oriented, Zoey's tastes tend more toward physical activity. There isn't a day that goes by where she's not jogging around the neighborhood or working out on one of the machines.

That is not to say that she doesn't spend time with her friends though. Zoey and Andrew decided that they would be Best Friends Forever and are now more or less attached at the hip. Bella joked that he might as well live over here for as little time as he spends at home. (Between you and me, I don't think that Andrew is very fond of the ghosts.)

Zoey has also proven to be quite a good babysitter to her two cousins. Amaya and Marcus just love her.

It has been a while since we've had two toddlers in the house and I had forgotten just how rambunctious they can be at times. Marcus may technically be Amaya's nephew but they act more like brother and sister.

They do absolutely everything together.

Both are just as adorable as can be.

That following Spring came a pair of milestone birthdays that quite frankly stunned me. My son-in-law was now officially middle-aged.

Then, a month later...

Did my daughter and son-in-law really just turn forty? I could hardly believe it.

Neither could Elysia. “Not another wrinkle. Please, not another wrinkle.”

“Dear, you can hardly even see them,” Holly tried to reassure her.

Them? There's more than one?!” She frantically checked her forehead and heaved a sigh. “Oh man, now I'm really in trouble. I don't remember you having this many wrinkles at forty! And just look at those crow's feet!”

Holly gave up then and there, but Judd managed to rescue the situation when he got home from his concert. Serenading her certainly didn't hurt.

Later that night he took her out for dinner and dancing to help take her mind off of things.

Slowly Elysia began to realize that wrinkles and gray hair did not mean the end of the world. She had a great job, two wonderful kids and a loving husband. A few signs of age meant nothing. They were entering a new stage of life together and nothing was going to keep them from living it to the fullest.

Just a few short months after our daughter turned forty the time finally came for Holly and I to embrace elderhood. We decided to have our own private dinner at the Bistro for Holly's birthday. It is not that we didn't want to have the rest of the family around, but sometimes it's nice to just be a couple for once, especially when you live in a household as large as ours.

We had a very pleasant evening. Holly and I both ordered the ratatouille and we shared a bottle of nectar, then capped it off with a delicious angel food cake for dessert. As we were leaving the restaurant...

“How do you feel?” I asked.

“Could...be better.” She squeaked out. “Could you help me to the car? I think I just twisted my back.”

A few days later it was my turn. I was ready. Age means nothing to me anymore. You're only as old as you feel.

And that felt rather painful, actually. Is it common to twist your back on your sixty-fifth birthday?

We're a little older, perhaps a little wiser, and a lot grayer. It really isn't so bad. True, most of our years are now behind us, but life is not over by any means. There are still memories to be made, books to read, scenes to put to canvas, jokes to laugh at, and nectar to taste.

But before I could get going with all of that...

...it was time to retire.

It was a bittersweet moment. I had spent forty-seven years of my life working at Sacred Spleen. There are a lot of pleasant memories tied to that place and many lifelong friends. With my brother-in-law taking over my position as head surgeon, though, I know that I'm leaving the place in good hands. Still, it will be strange not having to get up every morning and go to work. Now I'm left with lounging around in my bathrobe and cuddling with my wife instead.

I think I can manage. :)

---

(A/N: A day later than I expected, but I'm still somewhat of a zombie and this chapter was being a pain in the backside. :P Hope you enjoy!)

What a great update! I am so fond of this family, even though they aren't my sims.
