What a great few days for Iris and Timothy! A wild bachelorette party and a beautiful wedding. Poor Holly, though. :) What lifespan are you playing on?

The lifespan I'm using is about 230 days, with the age stages tweaked in such a way as to (sort of) imitate a regular human lifespan.

What a lovely ceremony! The bacherlorrete party was crazy!

Crazy on many levels! There were a ton of screenshots from the party that I just didn't use, as I was already one off from the 25 pic limit. I may have to eventually do another outtakes/deleted scenes post at some point. :)

Thanks so much! Next up: A bit of good news from the family, Kenji's birthday, an insane time-traveling teenager, and a very unexpected surprise.

What a beautiful wedding ceremony! Your lifespan choice was a good one because it seems realistic to me.

Thanks. The lifespan has been probably the biggest challenge here. I am constantly having to tweak things to make sure that sims don't age up before they should relative to the others, and I'm pretty sure there are a few inconsistencies in there, but for the most part it's all holding together. :)

Chapter 43 – Expecting the Unexpected

A quick shout-out to my baby brother, who just tied the knot with his sous-chef last month! Meet Sommer Bunch, my newest sister-in-law.

It has been a long time since I have seen Ian so happy. Congratulations man. I hope that everything goes well for the two of you.

These last twenty or so months have been relatively uneventful, which I have to say is a pleasant change of pace from the insanity that has been these last few years. At my age I can definitely appreciate a break to the hustle and bustle of our normal chaotic existence. We might as well enjoy the lull while it lasts, because I can guarantee that it won't last too long.

More on that later.

One thing that I have come to realize is that living with my nephew is an adventure in and of itself. Devon has quite the imagination, and some of the things he comes up with are just crazy enough to work. With Holly's assistance he was able to get his own seller's account at the consignment shop and makes a pretty decent amount of money—more than enough to pay for his materials and the damage he periodically does to his clothes and Elysia's garden.

She lost an entire crop of rare fruit when one of Devon's widgets exploded and set that part of the garden ablaze. Flame fruits are not supposed to flame quite that much...and neither are sweatshirts, for that matter.

He is still quite obsessed with that miner. We've gotten used to the noise.

Sort of.

Late last year Devon was busy working on another project, something major that he kept under wraps until it was fully completed. When he finally unveiled his work the rest of us were admittedly skeptical. He claimed that it was a time machine, and just to prove that it worked he pressed a few buttons on the keypad and hopped right in.

And promptly hopped out a few minutes later with a shocked expression on his face.

“He really DID exist!” Devon cheerfully exclaimed. “And here everyone thought that he was just a clever figment of an author's imagination!”

“Who?” Judd asked.

“Simlock Holmes.” He looked at me and smiled. “By the way, it was the salad.”

I was confused. “Excuse me...?”

“That gave you food poisoning on your first date with aunt Holly. It was the salad.”

Now that he mentioned it, something in that salad had tasted a little funny if I recalled correctly. That was over forty years ago, and the details were fuzzy even for me. Perhaps he really did just go back in time...

“Don't worry, I didn't mess with anything,” my nephew added. “Even I'm not crazy enough to play with the time stream. That would give the aliens the edge they need to take over!”

I think I will just take his word for it.

Kenji's fifth birthday rolled around a couple of months later. All of us had had a busy day at work, but that didn't stop us from throwing a party for the littlest member of the family.

I still can't believe my grandson is already in grade school. Talk about feeling old.

The months immediately following were relatively routine. Work, school, chess games, painting...you know the drill. About the only thing that was out of the ordinary was when Iris and Timothy decided to start house-hunting. When the two of them got married Malcolm and Darlene had made it very clear that they didn't need to be in a hurry to leave the nest, but as we were soon to discover, the newlyweds had their reasons...

Fast-forward to last week.

Holly and Darlene were in the kitchen eating a late lunch when Iris came home from work unexpectedly early. Her complexion was rather pale and she did not appear to be feeling well, something that my sister clued in on right away.

“You're home early,” Darlene commented. “Is something wrong?”

“Captain Goddard sent me home,” came Iris's reply. “I kind of got sick in the middle of an interrogation.”

“What happened?”

Iris opened the refrigerator and snagged a juice box. “Let's just say that lunch didn't settle too well. On the bright side, I managed to get a confession out of the suspect.”

“You know, this has been going on for the past four days. If I didn't know any better I would say that...” Darlene's voice trailed off. “You're pregnant, aren't you?”

Iris sipped her juice and sighed, a bare hint of a grin playing on her lips. “Maaaybe.”

That “maybe” was confirmed when Timothy arrived home. Iris wanted to tell him first before she made the official announcement that yes, she was indeed expecting. Congratulations to the new parents-to-be!

As it turns out, that wasn't the half of it. A few afternoons later while I was tapping away at my computer I noticed Darlene stumbling through the front door. She looked absolutely exhausted and ever-so-slightly distraught.

“Are you all right?”

“Ethan, can you check me with that scanner of yours?” She hesitated for a moment. “I think I might be pregnant.”

That was something that I had not expected to hear.

“Wh...what?”

“I've been feeling under the weather for the past few days,” she explained. “At first I thought it was just that stomach bug that's been going around the school, but today during the staff meeting I about gagged at the smell of hot chocolate. Chocolate, of all the crazy things!”

I should probably mention that my sister is a total chocoholic.

“That is definitely strange.”

“You're telling me! I got to thinking that the last time I had experienced anything like this was when I was pregnant with Devon...but that's just crazy. I mean, at my age?”

“It's certainly not impossible,” I replied. “Mom was a few years older than you when she had Ian.”

“Oy...” She sat down with a sigh. “I had forgotten about that. It's not like I'm adverse to the idea of having another child, but can you imagine how strange it would be to be pregnant at the same time as my own daughter?”

“You have a point.”

I did as requested and pulled out my medical bag. The readout from the scanner didn't lie; my sister was definitely pregnant, and from the looks of the readings she was about three months along. Darlene took the news with a mixture of shock and amusement. My brother-in-law on the other hand...

“Love...there is something that I need to tell you.”

“Is something wrong?”

Darlene hesitated. “No...but it is rather unexpected.” She heaved a sigh. “I'm pregnant.”

He took the news well, don't you think?

For some odd reason Darlene popped the wish to have another child, and that was a plot twist that I just couldn't pass up. :)

Hehe, thanks!

Yeah...unfortunately I don't really have a choice but to move people out. Two babies brings the household up to 12, and while the mods I use can handle the overstuffed house, my poor computer is lagging like mad with the extra sims (and it's still rough with 9). Don't think that this is the last you'll hear from Iris though. I can guarantee that she will be back in the writer's chair, unless her uncle changes the password, that is. :P

Next up: Nooboo insanity and a bittersweet parting. Thank you guys so much for reading!

The title said it all.  ;) Wow, it would be quite interesting to see both the mother and the daughter pregnant at the same time. It's a shame you have to move Iris and Timothy have to move out, but if your computer is lagging from this, then I can't think of any other option.

Two Worlds, One Heart - Interlude and Announcement
« Reply #264 on: November 28, 2012, 09:09:26 PM »
Interlude Part Deux, and an Announcement

Ever since I started playing Sims 3 I've been using a laptop with 3GB RAM. Given that the game regularly pulls a 1.8GB+ load on my computer memory you can imagine what sort of lag I've been experiencing.

All of this changed yesterday. As an early birthday present to myself I bought two 4GB RAM cards and had my boss help me install them. (I had to bribe him with fudge :P). So far in my playtesting the game is running far more smoothly, which means two things: I can finally get Showtime and Seasons (though I won't install Seasons until this story is complete—I don't want the new attraction system to mess with four Eternally Faithful couples.).

It also means that I should be able to keep Iris and family in the household.

It does mean, however, that I will have to go back to an old save and catch back up, since I had already gone quite a far way beyond what was already written in the actual gameplay. (Ethan and Holly were elders and Zoey was near graduation.) It's worth it to keep miss Iris, I think. I never wanted to get rid of them in the first place. She and Tim are just too adorable to leave to story progression!

So I have some playing to do and a bit of house remodeling to accommodate upwards of thirteen Sims. It might take me a while, and to top it off I somehow managed to acquire a lovely case of the flu. I have the Germy moodlet. Go me. :o

In the meantime, here are another set of random outtakes from the story thus far. Enjoy—and I really hope to have the next chapter out soon. Thank you all yet again for reading. I really appreciate it, and I hope you enjoy!

A scene from very early in the story (as in Ethan and Holly had only just started going steady). Darlene had a slumber party with her new friend Malcolm and they both decided that playing with blocks was more fun than eating breakfast. This amusing speech bubble was the inspiration for that scene between Holly and Darlene in chapter 8, and is what inspired me to try and get the two together.

I mentioned a few times that I had Morty and Bella in the household for a while so I could establish their relationship. The two of them are just pure adorable. This would be about three days before Cassie came into the picture. :)

Story progression came up with a few adorable couples of its own. These two are completely lovey-dovey and have four kids to prove it.

Iris...I have to say she is one of the more amusing sims I've played. I randomly rolled the Rebellious trait for her as a child and she has been rather a handful. I know this has nothing to do with that trait as it's just a random reaction, but it does fit her personality quite well. Iris is very opinionated.

It goes without saying that Ethan never had a relationship with his in-laws. His displeasure here, though, appears to be purely political.

This broke my heart. Boyd had just lost Susan earlier that day and was crying on Dorie's shoulder at a party. :(

Why yes, as a matter of fact Elly was talking to Judd at the time. Sometimes I think that the game is clairvoyant as to my intentions for the characters.

Elysia's first mood swing, and man was it nasty. She popped all sorts of wishes to be mean to people, break up with Judd, stop being friends with both of her parents, the list goes on.

A very pregnant Darlene and a very sleepy Iris. One thing that annoys me a bit about the bedtime stories: the child never seems to choose his/her own bed. Looks like daddy is sleeping in the spare room tonight. Poor Malcolm. :P

And we end with an endearing father/son moment. Malcolm is such an amazing dad, always popping wishes to play with or talk to his kids. You'd think he had the Family-Oriented trait.

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 44

Chapter 44 – On Babies and Home Improvement

Greetings everyone. It has been a while since I've been back in the writer's chair, but now that neither of my two grandchildren need constant care I suppose I have a bit more free time. Sometimes I need a bit of a break from painting all day.

This has been a very long and very hectic year. Between two births and remodeling the house things have been more than a little insane. Things are finally starting to settle down now, though, and we can finally sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labors. Once Malcolm had recovered from the initial shock to his system he became rather excited about the prospect of becoming a father again. I can understand why he was a little taken aback; it is not terribly usual to be expecting a child at the same time that you are expecting your first grandchild.

Thankfully Darlene wasn't on bed rest this time, but she still didn't have an easy go of it. She had a horrible time with backaches and spent a vast majority of her time practically glued to the couch.

Iris, on the other hand, did amazingly well. Other than those first few days she had very little in the way of morning sickness, and her frequent meditation seemed to take care of any backaches.

There was one tiny issue however...

Unfortunately for Devon, the further Iris and Darlene got into their pregnancies, the less tolerant they became of loud noises...which more or less quashed his plan to continue mining the back yard. Finally one afternoon Iris had had quite enough and marched right into the back yard to yell at her brother.

“Devon! Stop drilling, will you? It's driving me and Mom crazy!”

“But sis, I just found--”

“Cut it out!”

“But the aliens--”

Dad!

Malcolm wanted nothing to do with it, so he just poked his head out the back door and said “Devon, just find something else to do for the next few months, all right?”

“Awww, man.”

We didn't see too much of Devon until after the births. I think he was rather afraid of his sister after all of that. What little we did see of him usually involved him either entering or leaving his time machine.

He wasn't entirely antisocial though. Devon took the opportunity to reconnect with his grandfather, which was good for both of them. Geoffrey has been feeling rather lonely lately.

I don't need to say that he was excited about not only gaining another grandchild, but seeing his first great-grandchild. The only thing that bothered him was that Nancy wasn't around to share in that joy.

Iris's due date came without much fanfare. The family spent most of the day lounging around on the couch watching movies, making sure that both she and Darlene were comfortable.

Finally, late that night, the contractions began.

Timothy was as calm and collected as ever I had seen him as he ushered Iris out the front door, and both of them were simply beaming with excited anticipation.

Malcolm and Darlene were getting ready to follow them when all of the sudden...

“Oh you've got to be kidding me. You're not supposed to show up for another week!”

“I don't think she's planning to wait, love,” Malcolm replied. “We'd better get you to the hospital. I'll call the kids and tell them what is happening.”

So that night saw the birth of two adorable additions to the family. Meet Marcus David...

...and his ever-so-slightly younger aunt, Amaya Grace.

I have to say, it is nice having babies in the house again. Amaya is a little love, always giggling and playful.

Iris and Timothy are such good parents to Marcus; he is a very well-loved child, constantly doted upon by his parents and cousins.

And two very devoted grandparents.

It took a bit of convincing, but Iris and Timothy finally decided that, at least for the time being, they would be staying here with the rest of the family. Iris only agreed on the condition that they would pay a fair rent for their rooms. All that they want is to be able to stand on their own. I really have to admire that.

While their decision to stay wasn't the sole factor, it did prompt us to finally do something that had needed to happen for many years: remodel the house. I made the decision to sell the villa on Summer Hill and use part of the money to completely re-do the basement apartments as well as expand the attic.

So without further ado, allow me to give you the grand tour.

Starting with the attic, that is Kenji's room to the left and Zoey's to the far right. We put bunk beds and an entertainment center in her room to accommodate any slumber parties (she has been having Andrew and the Hart twins over quite a bit lately).

The second floor hasn't changed much. That is Ethan's and my room on the left with our personal bathroom and deck, the foyer-slash-music room in the middle (formerly the playroom) and Elly and Judd's suite with their attached bathroom on the right.

Ground floor, again, not much of a change. Kitchen and dining area to the left, front foyer leading to the main floor bathroom, and the living room to the right.

The basement was far and away our largest undertaking. We rearranged the central entertainment area and added a foosball table (at Ethan's request). At the top you see Iris and Timothy's apartment, complete with their own mini-kitchen and dining area, plus a juice bar. To the lower right is Malcolm and Darlene's suite with their attached bathroom, then going clockwise from there we have the main bathroom, Amaya's room, then Devon's bunker bedroom. Truly, the place must be seen to be believed, but he keeps the door locked with several different keys so this is the best view that we have. Iris believes that it is booby-trapped...and knowing my nephew it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

So there you have it: Nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two living rooms, two kitchens, and a very satisfied family. It was a lot of hard work, but looking at the final result it was well worth the effort. Now I can only hope that we can rest for a while before the next bit of insanity begins. Given our track record I kind of doubt it, however.
