I love the way you deal with whatever the game throws at you. You portray much intelligence and sensitivity, when it comes to gauging what it means for your Sims. This is what makes the story so special to me. :)

On a more positive note (but not for him), Malcolm needs to tick the 40-49 box on the forms now.  ;)

Yeah, Malcolm came into his adulthood with a very nasty case of Mid-Life Crisis. I've been cancelling wishes left and right for him (no, you're not changing jobs!). Fortunately there hasn't been even the slightest inkling of him wanting to divorce Darlene. I would probably have to kill him. :P

Welcome Zoey! But what a horrible birth-present, you great grandfather dying. RIP Nick.

I was rather sad to see the old codger go, truth be told. There has been a rash of townie deaths lately and there are presently a total of three sims left who were full adults at the beginning of the game...and the older YAs are starting to die off too. I have two rather important characters (to the story) who died on the same day...and I have no clue how I'm going to write it in yet!

I love the way you deal with whatever the game throws at you. You portray much intelligence and sensitivity, when it comes to gauging what it means for your Sims. This is what makes the story so special to me. :)

Thanks. :) Being at the whim of in-game randomness and free will is a fun challenge as a writer, that's for sure. I've tried to place myself in their shoes, especially when tragic events occur.

R.I.P Nick. Congrats grandpa Ethan. ;) Great update.

Thanks! As soon as Zoey was born both Ethan and Holly popped the wish for five grandkids. Seeing as how Elly is their only child...there is absolutely no WAY that is going to happen. :P

Chapter 35 – Matters of Inheritance and Birthdays

I always wondered why Dad posted so many photos of me when I was a baby. Now that I have Zoey around I think I understand. You just can't help but show off your new little bundle of joy. :)

Isn't she just darling? Judd and I are completely smitten. She is super sweet and very well behaved, just a bundle of cooing and giggles...

...and, not surprisingly, she has grandpa wrapped around her little finger. :)

Sadly, sweet Zoey will never get the chance to know any of her great-grandparents. A little more than a month after she was born we got word that grandma Vita was in the hospital. Dad and the other doctors did everything that they could to try and bring her back to health, but in the end it was all for naught. She lapsed into a coma in spite of their efforts and passed away a few nights later.

I spent most of that night crying in my husband's arms. As unpleasant a person as my grandmother was, she was still family...and I still loved her.

My parents think that I'm crazy, but I swear that she died of a broken heart. I don't know. Maybe it's just the hopeless romantic in me that wants to believe that there was at least some good in Vita Alto. Despite her evil nature she still loved my grandfather, even if they didn't always get along terribly well.

...then again, maybe I am crazy.

They were buried together in the back part of the memorial gardens behind the mausoleum. Within a very short distance of the Landgraab family plots, I might add. Believe me, the irony was not lost on any of us.

Of course, since Mom was their only child, she inherited everything—the bank accounts, the properties...and, unfortunately, the villa on Summer Hill Court.

Quite the eyesore, isn't it? Mom isn't sure exactly what she wants to do with the place, but she certainly does not want to live there, at least in its current state. So far she has narrowed it down to three possibilities: sell the property, renovate, or have it demolished. Mom is torn between selling and renovating, but Dad is all for demolition (it's no secret that he couldn't stand Mom's parents). Personally I'm voting for renovation. The grounds are actually quite nice; it's just the house that needs a serious overhaul.

Mom doesn't seem to be too much in a hurry to make a decision at any rate, so for now Villa Alto will remain as-is. Disturbingly pink and hideously ugly.

Just as the dust began to settle we were met with another shock from the other side of the family. This one, however, was a lot more pleasant. One Saturday afternoon Dad was invited to a party at the Alvi place and was greeted by none other than uncle Arlo.

My uncle apologized for creating such a rift in their relationship, and the two of them talked for several hours just catching up. By the end of the night the two brothers were friends again...

...and then Kaylynn promptly kicked them out so she and Miraj could finally go to sleep. Dad came home with a smile on his face. Finally, for the first time in over ten years, the Bunch family was back on good terms with one another.

I've noticed that no one has written much about my cousin Devon. He's about as quiet and unassuming a child as I have ever met. I don't think he's much for crowds, and seeing as how we are a rather large family Devon doesn't make his presence known all that often. We're more likely to get a text message from him than actual face-to-face conversation.

He gets along exceedingly well with his father and spends plenty of quality time with him, however.

I realized something a while back. It's almost as if Devon and Iris are just younger versions of my uncle and aunt. Uncle Malcolm has always been the strong silent type, and Devon is far more so. On the other side of the coin, Iris is just as outgoing and outspoken as aunt Darlene. It wouldn't shock me in the least if she attempted some of the crazy stunts that made my aunt so much fun to live with when I was growing up.

Fireworks, anyone?

(Edit: Don't give her any ideas! - Uncle Malcolm)

Speaking of my favorite little cousin, Iris had her birthday a few months back. It was a school night so having a big party was out of the question, but she did invite a couple of her friends over for cake and ice cream. (though sadly one of them couldn't come—Cassie was fighting off a cold so Bella kept her home)

Happy 13th!

By the way...did anyone recognize the red-head standing behind Mom in the previous picture? That would be Iris's friend Timothy Sw0rd.

Something tells me that there's more to this than just friendship. I can tell just by the way he looks at Iris that Timothy has a serious crush on her. The only reason I know is because I've been there. Judd used to look at me in much the same way before we started dating.

My cousin is, however, completely oblivious.

I'm sure she'll get the hint eventually. Meanwhile, the two of them are completely inseparable. Sounds familiar, no?

Hers wasn't the only birthday we had the pleasure of celebrating. My sweet little Zoey turned one only a few weeks later. Mom had the honor of introducing her to her cake.

My precious little girl. She's just so cute!

I can't believe she's already a year old. Time is just flying so quickly! And yes...I do realize that I just sounded like my mother. I can't help it...it must be a mom thing. :)

(A/N: Holly's hair has perpetuated through another generation! Zoey retained her mother's blue eyes (which may either be from Nick or Ethan) and she appears to have the Sekemoto eye shape. I'm not sure of the mouth. It seems most similar to Zelda or maybe even as far back as Yumi. We shall see as she grows up. :) Thanks you all so much for reading, and I hope you enjoy!)

In context, the picture of Vita's ghost cracked me up.
Zoey is a beautiful toddler! :)

Zoey is so cute! Iris is a healthy mix of both Darlene and Malcolm.  :)

I love Zoey! She just aged up in game and is an adorable child too. From what I'm seeing she is a good mix of her parents' features.

In context, the picture of Vita's ghost cracked me up.
Zoey is a beautiful toddler! :)

It was just one of those things when I happened to be snooping around the graveyard after midnight. I was rather surprised to see both Vita and Nick out and about on the same night, and ever more shocked that Vita reacted to him. Now it makes me wonder whether she became Fiendishly Delighted at the sight of her husband's ghost.

Zoey is so cute! Iris is a healthy mix of both Darlene and Malcolm.  :)

Definitely more Darlene than Malcolm, though it looks like Iris has smaller lips than her mother. She is kind of pretty, actually. :)

Thanks for the comments!

Chapter 36 – Iris's Journal: Shang Simla

I can't believe that Uncle Ethan gave me the password! I am taking over this blog! Bwa-ha-ha!

Nah, not really, but I was given permission to keep a diary here while we're on vacation. The Landgraab family is going to China! Something about Mom and a mid-life crisis or something like that...?

I'm not about to question why though. We leave tomorrow for Shang Simla. How awesome is that?

Day 1: Base Camp, Shang Simla

Stuff I've Learned Today:

Thing #1: Dad gets airsick

Not much I want to say about this one, other than the fact that I'm grateful that we were only a few rows back from the lavatory. He still felt pretty lousy when we got to base camp, though I imagine that the bumpy ride from the airport probably didn't help.

Thing #2: Jet-lag stinks

All of us were dead tired when we finally arrived. It was a seventeen hour flight from Sunset Valley, which was miserable enough as it was (see Thing #1). Once we had settled in at base camp all of us crawled into bed and slept for most of the rest of the day. We were up and moving around by three, but there isn't too much to do in only a few hours before sunset, so we just headed to the Forbidden City marketplace to browse.

The locals seemed pretty nice, at any rate. I got to chatting with one of the merchants, but I can't for the life of me remember his name.

Thing #3: Chopsticks are tricky,

but Dim Sum is delicious. Devon and I were dropping things all over the place but finally got the hang of it enough to actually eat. Mom finally just gave up and used her fingers.

I so need to learn the recipe for this before we leave.

I'm still tired, so I think I'll hit the sack early. Tomorrow I'm heading to the Academy to try my hand at Sim-fu. I can't wait!

Day 2: Phoenix Academy, Shang Simla

Hiy-yah!

Stuff I've Learned Today:

Thing #1: My brother is boring.

Seriously. We're in China. There are literally a ton of things to see and do...and he has his eyes glued to the telescope?

Thing #2: Tomb raiding is a must.

I think it must be in the travel brochure. Also in said travel brochure are coupons for goofy tomb exploration gear.

Yeah, like that. My parents look like something out of Simdiana Jones. It looks like they had one heck of an adventure though.

And a very profitable one, from the artifacts they managed to uncover. Can I keep that lapis that you found, Mom?

Thing #3: Tomb raiding brings out my parents' romantic side.

Dude, really? In a stone sarcophagus?!

Thing #4: Getting hit in the head with a training dummy hurts.

Just ask Mrs. Pei. So far I haven't had the displeasure of hitting the dummy head first...

...I'm still having a heck of a time hitting the dummy at all. Sim-fu is not as easy as the masters make it look. Mr. Pei told me that I need to be patient with myself and focus. “Discipline your mind and your body will surely follow.”

I trained for most of the day and was exhausted by late-afternoon, but I managed to earn my yellow belt in the process. Go me!

Once I had said goodbye to the Pei family I took a quick shower, gathered up my brother (his eyes were still glued to the telescope) and headed back to camp to meet my parents and have some dinner.

Thing #5: There is a time difference between Shang Simla and Sunset Valley

I managed to forget that small detail when I called Timothy and woke him up out of a sound sleep. He didn't seem to mind too much, even if he was a bit incoherent for a lot of the conversation.

He was awake enough to tell me about the formal dance that will be happening a few weeks after we get back and asked me if I wanted to go with him. I figured hey, why not go with my best friend? He's not seeing anyone and neither am I, so we might as well go and have fun, right?

Ugh...but that means I will have to go dress shopping, doesn't it? I hate dresses. Oh well...prom is a once in a lifetime thing. I guess I can manage.

Day #3: Shang Simla Airport, Terminal A, Gate 2.

I'm on my laptop at the gate, waiting anxiously for our flight back home. The security line wasn't as long this time around so we have a couple of hours to kill before we board the plane. Thank goodness for free wi-fi.

Stuff I've Learned Today:

Thing #1: Three days is not long enough to properly explore a place.

I didn't get to see much beyond the marketplace and the Academy, and Mom and Dad only managed to explore a single tomb. We need at least a week to really experience Shang Simla. (Hint, hint?)

Since we only had a few hours left to enjoy ourselves before heading to the airport, Mom and Dad decided to join me and Devon at the Academy instead of wander off into some random tomb. I think they were a bit disappointed that they couldn't do more exploring, but they really enjoyed the gardens.

Oh good grief...more mushy junk. What are you, hopeless romantics?

Thing #2: Practice really does make perfect.

And Mr. Pei is an amazing mentor. With his guidance I was able to earn my green belt shortly before lunch.

That oak board didn't stand a chance! Oh yeah!

While I was busy working on my kicks, my little brother was practicing his chess moves—and finally managed to beat Dad for the first time!

Trust me, that's no small accomplishment. Dad is insanely good at the game; he and Uncle Ethan play at least twice a week at home and he teaches logic classes at the school. And well, he's a doctor. Of course he's a brainiac.

Thing #3: I like it here.

We ARE coming back sometime...right?

Drat, my battery is running low. I'd better sign off before it dies completely. Wish us luck for a safe and uneventful trip. Dad is already half asleep from the motion sickness meds so it should at least be more pleasant flight. Catch you all on the flip side!

--

(A/N: For some odd reason Malcolm came to Shang Simla with the nauseous moodlet. No idea why.

Thanks for reading!)

I totally agree! Iris' point of view made it all new and exciting.  ;D
It was good of her to include the 'mushy' bits.
Darlene and Malcolm look very happy together despite the midlife-crisis! :)

Thank you! I figured I needed to change things up a bit, and Iris's character just begs to be in the spotlight. She's way too much fun!

They are without a doubt the most mushy couple I have ever played in the game. Malcolm and Darlene are constantly popping wishes to kiss and woohoo with one another. I'm sure that has something to do with Malcolm gaining the Hopeless Romantic trait when he aged up to YA. :)

I don't think this will be the last we see of Iris. :)

I was pleasantly surprised when Zoey aged up to toddler. She rivals her mother as far as cuteness is concerned.

Next up: Iris's prom night, making music, and someone quits their job! Thanks for reading and commenting!
