Chapter 32 – Wedding at the Spring

After many weeks of consideration and a lot of chats with various members of the family, I have finally decided to pursue a career in the sciences. It wasn't a decision that I took lightly; I have been torn between my two passions of music and science and had a very hard time choosing which path to take. I love music, and at the same time I am fascinated by the pursuit of knowledge, of the unknown. What finally occurred to me was that I would always have my music regardless of where I chose to go. It's not like I'd have to give up the guitar to become a scientist, where I would have to give up my love of science to pursue a career in music.

About three weeks after graduation I finally put in my application for the internship program at the science lab. I don't know whether it was my GPA or my relation to grandma Judy, but they accepted it almost immediately. It's a dirty job sometimes, but least it's not emptying bedpans like Dad had to do when he first started med school. Yuck!

Work aside, this has been an amazing few months. Everyone has been super-excited for the wedding, especially the parents. And of course, with a wedding comes the inevitable bachelor party. A few nights ago Dad and Leighton kidnapped my fiancé and dragged him to the Grind for a guys-only bash, and from the photos that Dad took it looks like they had a blast.

Dallas proposed a toast...

...then sprayed Judd with fizzy nectar.

There was much dancing. I had no idea my uncle could put on moves like that.

More dancing. At first I was a little confused as to why Dad's best friend was there, until I realized that Parker is actually Judd's cousin. It really is a small world.

Leighton ordered a round of party drinks for everyone. Dad warned me about those...they pack a crazy punch.

They all stumbled back into the house at about three in the morning and pretty much went straight to bed. When I woke up at about seven poor Judd was in the bathroom, feeling the not-so-pleasant side effects of a night of fizzy nectar and party drinks.

To be fair Dad and Uncle Malcolm were in pretty lousy shape too. The coffee machine worked overtime that morning.

I had decided against having a bachelorette party. Not that I'm opposed to that sort of thing (I heard that aunt Darlene's was quite a blast) but I don't have that many girlfriends, and those who I am close with are still in high school. Instead, the four ladies in the household (my nine-year-old cousin included) decided to have a girl's day out at the spa. I don't think I've ever been so relaxed. That massage was heavenly...

After a light lunch at the Bistro we went to the neighborhood pool and continued our day of relaxation.

Well, except for Iris. She did more swimming than relaxing. Did I mention that she is crazy active?

By the time we got home the men were (mostly) back to their normal selves. Judd made me promise not to let him drink party drinks again. Heh.

That next afternoon we packed up the cake, tables, and chairs and made our way to Summer Hill Springs to set everything up. Fortunately it didn't take too long, and the guests began to arrive close to sundown. Almost everyone whom we invited showed up, and I was thrilled to see grandma Vita and grandpa Nick among them. Grandpa said he wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Mom was close to tears as I walked up the aisle.

Judd's dad could hardly contain his excitement, meanwhile my baby cousin tried to wander off. I guess weddings are boring when you're three.

I guess I'll let the photos show the rest of the ceremony. :)

The cake was fantastic, at least from what little I was able to eat. Judd and I were far too busy socializing with friends and relatives to sit down. No one ever said that being a bride was relaxing.

Devon really took a shining to my grandfather. I think it's the only time in history that Nick Alto has ever been cordial to anyone with Landgraab as their last name.

Is it just me, or does he look rather...frail?

One by one the guests began to leave, and pretty soon it was just me, Judd, his father, and my parents left. We were having a fantastic time dancing...even if Leighton did bring up a rather embarrassing subject...

Judd and I have decided that we're going to wait for a little while before starting a family. Both of us want to become more established in our careers first.

...but that doesn't mean that we can't have fun in the meantime. :)

(A/N: I still can't believe that Nick picked up Devon, especially since his relationship with Malcolm is very much in the red.

I'm headed off on a trip tomorrow afternoon, so I'm not sure when I will be updating this again. The laptop is coming with me and I hope to have some downtime to myself (we're visiting relatives...oh yay), but no guarantees on an update, especially since I don't know what the internet situation will be. I will be back on the evening of the 21st at any rate.

Good grief, I HOPE I'm not internet-less for that long. I might go insane... :P

Anyhow, thank you all so much for reading and commenting!)

What a beautiful wedding. And I agree with you that it was pure story gold that Nick picked Devon up. The morning after shot of coffee drinking was genius. I love this story so much. Hope you won't have to live without internet!

Congratulations Elly and Judd! I wish them all the best. I, too, found it very sweet that Nick picked up Devon.

Dallas' party wear totally cracked me up!
Go, girls! I much prefer the spa and a girly afternoon by the pool too.
Nick Alto can be a very nice person when his family-oriented trait kicks in.
What a lovely wedding! :)

I has internet! :D

Sometimes the best moments are totally unscripted. :) Nick seriously made me laugh!

Thanks!

Congratulations Elly and Judd! I wish them all the best. I, too, found it very sweet that Nick picked up Devon.

I never thought Nick had it in him, but as Simblip reminded me, he does indeed have the Family-Oriented trait. I just never thought it would apply to the grandchild of his two mortal enemies.

Dallas must have mis-read the memo saying to "Dress to Impress". :P I actually kind of liked what Sam wore though, but Malcolm was totally boring wearing just his regular formalwear.

The ceremony was very beautiful!
Congrats to the happy couple!

Chapter 33 – Bad News, Good News, and Kitty Mews

Married life appears to suit Elysia and Judd well. It's been a year and a half since their wedding and they still act as if they're on their honeymoon.

They've bandied about the idea of moving to their own place, but so far it is nothing but talk. To be perfectly honest I would much rather they stay here, at the very least until they have their finances straight. Then again, Malcolm and Darlene still live in the downstairs apartment and they have been quite well established for several years now. The arrangement suits us...I admit, we've been living as a cohesive family unit for so long that it would be hard for us to split up.

Who would have thought, an Alto and a Landgraab not only living under the same roof, but as the best of friends? Though, don't ask Malcolm how he felt when my father was holding Devon during the wedding. He is still rather leery around my parents, and understandably so given what they tried to do to him as a child.

Speaking of Devon...

My youngest nephew turned five a few weeks ago! Things have been so hectic around here that we just plain forgot to have a birthday party for him. He said he didn't mind (though Darlene still felt bad). Devon is a pretty laid-back kid, as quiet and mellow as his sister is brash and hyperactive. One of his favorite pastimes is curling up on the couch with a good book and reading the afternoon away.

His other favorite thing is hanging around with his grandpa. :)

Geoffrey and Devon share a good friendship, something that I wish that Elly had been able to experience early on in her life. She never really knew Jack, sadly, and it was only in her late teens that she began to have any sort of relationship with my father.

As we discovered not too long ago, however, that relationship will sadly be short-lived.

We received some not-so-wonderful news from my parents a few weeks back. Remember how Elly offhandedly mentioned that my father was looking frail? Apparently her observation was spot-on.

My father is dying. They don't know how long exactly that he is expected to live, but Doctor Wolff has given him a year at most.

Talk about surreal.

Now I must face the reality that my father won't be around for much longer...and for the first time in my life I actually care. For the first time ever I can hold an amicable conversation with him (though don't get me wrong, he still has a sharp tongue). He, like my mother, has mellowed over the years, and now that he has the knowledge that time is limited, it seems that my father is cherishing every moment he spends with his family.

The news rattled Elysia a bit, needless to say. She is hoping that, at least, he will be around long enough to meet the newest member of the family.

(Elly and Judd have finally told the rest of the family so now I can make the official announcement.)

A few short days after my parents revealed the news we discovered that Elysia was pregnant. :)

Ethan and I were simply ecstatic. Neither of us expected it so soon (and frankly neither did they) but everyone is looking forward to meeting the new little one. Elysia is three months along and only barely starting to show. I cannot believe it...I'm going to be a grandmother!

All right...I'm ready to cry now.

Everything seems to be going well with the rest of the family. With the recent retirement of Darlene's boss she has been moved out of the classroom entirely and into the Principal's office. Great news for Darlene and Malcolm, not quite as great for Iris. Now she really has to make sure that she is on her best behavior at school. :P

Darlene has taken it upon herself to teach Iris the game of chess in hopes of improving her discipline. So far it seems to be working; her grades have improved and she has learned to channel her energy in more productive ways. They are considering enrolling her in a martial arts class once she hits high school, but that is still very tentative at this point.

Not long after Elysia and Judd tied the knot we got word that Lisa was engaged to none other than her wingman.

Say hello to the soon-to-be Mrs. Lisa Bachelor. :)

We still aren't hearing much from Arlo, unfortunately. What little we do hear comes through Ian, since he still refuses to talk to Ethan or Darlene. From what it sounds like he's more or less married to his job and isn't seeing anyone or doing much of anything else.

Ian is doing quite well. As it turns out he is quite talented in the kitchen and has already risen through the ranks at the Diner to become the executive chef. Better yet, he recently signed a contract with the Cooking Cable network for six episodes of his own show. He isn't even twenty-eight yet. How impressive is that?

Naturally, though, most of our focus has been on Elysia and our coming grandbaby. The other day I took her out shopping for maternity clothes and to start looking at cribs and other baby supplies. We met Judd and Ethan at the park for a picnic after the fact and unexpectedly encountered an old friend.

Mrow?”

We turned around and saw a very familiar cat walking behind us. Was that Rembrandt?

“Remmy-cat?” Elly bent down and put her hand out for the cat to sniff. “Is that you?”

The cat licked her hand and brushed against her. Gently Elysia took the elderly feline into her arms and held him.

“Hey there buddy...aww, I've missed you, big guy!”

The old tomcat was purring like mad in Elly's arms. I couldn't believe it—it really was Rembrandt. He had to be at least eighteen by now, if not older. Ian must have been putting life fruit in his kitty chow or something.

After a few minutes of cuddles Elly carefully placed Rembrandt back on the ground. He meowed once, then turned tail and ran back in the direction of home. Seeing the cat again reminded me of Judy...and just how much I missed her. I know that she would be just as excited for the coming of her first great-grandchild and probably would have jumped for joy with the news.

Who knows...perhaps she actually did. :)

Congrats Elly and Judd! It was cute when Holly had wanted to cry after realising she will be a grandmother. It's great to hear that Lisa is now engaged. It's also great to hear that Ian is going really well with his career. I wonder how he and Jamie are going.

How exciting for Holly to become a grandma! I love her over-emotional side too.
The expression on Elysia's face when she holds Rembrandt... She is such a beautiful Sim! :)

Back from vacation!

Chapter 34 – And Nooboo Makes Nine

It goes without saying that Elly's pregnancy was cause for much excitement in the household.

The last six months were surprisingly easy, very little in the way of back pain, and almost no nausea whatsoever. There were the cravings, which were definitely on the strange side. (Sushi with barbeque sauce and gummy bears...and I thought that Holly's ramen and ice cream was odd.)

At about month five Elysia asked me to determine the gender of the baby. It is something I have done many times before...but it's somewhat different when it's your own daughter and grandchild.

The test was easy, just a simple scan and it was done. Elly was having a little girl. She told me later that they had been hoping for a daughter and already had the perfect name in mind for the little one.

Elysia went into labor at about eight last Friday morning—just before Holly and I were headed off to work. Needless to say both of us called off at the last minute so we could accompany her and Judd to the hospital for the birth. Leighton and Zelda met us there, and the four of us sat (im)patiently waiting for the impending arrival of our granddaughter.

Zoey Leah Sekemoto was born at eleven-fifteen a.m., eight pounds, two ounces, and in perfect health. When Judd came out of the delivery room with the baby in his arms I about cried. My baby girl had just had a baby of her own...

Just call me grandpa. :)

But life, as always, tends to throw a curveball every once in a while. That night Holly received the phone call that she had been dreading for the last six months. Her father had passed away late that afternoon—mere hours after the birth of his first great-grandchild.

The news took the wind out of our sails for a while. Holly was rather surprised that she took his death as hard as she did, particularly given their checkered past.

Fortunately Zoey made for a wonderful distraction. It is rather difficult to frown when you have something so adorable giggling at you.

She is the sweetest little baby and everyone just adores her. This one is going to be spoiled, I do believe. ;)

A week later we had something else to celebrate. Well, sort of. The person doing the celebrating wasn't exactly thrilled about it...

It was time to welcome Malcolm to the over 40 club. He insisted that he absolutely did NOT want a birthday party, but Darlene managed to convince him to at least have a cake.

I was dragged into my forties kicking and screaming too, so I completely understand his trepidation. You kind of get used to the wrinkles after a while, I suppose. To be honest, I'm not so sure that Malcolm is so bothered by turning forty, more he is dreading what will happen at this time next year.

His oldest will become a teenager, and that unnerves him to no end.

Iris is her mother in spades, though fortunately not nearly so...accident-prone? She is always looking for attention and is wildly competitive, something that, I imagine, will be compounded quite a bit once those teenage hormones kick in.

Like mother, like daughter.

Despite her brashness Iris is a good-hearted, friendly soul. She is quite the popular girl in school and has many friends.

I feel like I'm looking back in time when I see this picture. This is Iris and her best friend Cassie Goth. Go back twenty-six years and we could very well be looking at a photo of Darlene and Bella. It is simply amazing just how much they look like their mothers.

The real reason why I think that Malcolm is so unnerved? Iris's other best friend. A best friend that happens to be male.

Draw your own conclusions. ;)

(A/N: I can't believe it happened again! I saw the notification that Nick was dying at midnight the day that Elly went into labor. Why does this game delight in killing off elder sims on their relatives' birthdays?!

Once again, many, many thanks for reading and commenting. I am so glad that folks are enjoying this. The more I play this family the more I love them, it seems—especially the second generation.)

A wonderful update, Raia! It's a shame that Nick passed away the day Zoey was born.  :( On a more positive note (but not for him), Malcolm needs to tick the 40-49 box on the forms now.  ;) I was heart-warmed when I saw Iris and Cassie playing together. Memories of Darlene and Bella playing together came to me right away.

Welcome Zoey! But what a horrible birth-present, you great grandfather dying. RIP Nick.
