Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 24
« Reply #121 on: September 15, 2012, 04:47:37 AM »
(A/N: I actually cried a bit when Judy died. In many ways she reminds me of my own mother and I've grown quite attached to her throughout the course of the story.

Thanks Apples, Sadie, and Katie for the comments and thanks to everyone for reading!)

Chapter 24 – Thirteen Candles

A brief moment of silence for the people of Simnation, if you will. The election results are in, and with 60% of the popular vote Vita Alto is the new president.

I think I'm going to be sick.

All right, perhaps I will not be moving to Lunar Lakes as I had alluded to as a teenager. I am not quite as concerned as I once was. At just shy of seventy years of age it is doubtful that my mother will seek a second term once this one is finished, and even if she does...there is a young up-and-coming politician who could very well beat her in four years' time. At twenty-seven he is already being vetted for governor and is almost guaranteed to win if he decides to run.

Meet Sunset Valley's current mayor, Mortimer Goth. (Photo courtesy of Darlene, when she and Malcolm attended one of his political fundraisers.)

It blew my mind. I still remember when he was a teenager putting whoopee cushions in the sofa during one of Darlene's slumber parties.

Is it odd that I am not even forty and feel seriously old?

We are doing decently well given the circumstances. The first few months after Judy's passing were particularly trying; Ethan was given the responsibility of being executor of her will, and there was quite a bit of contention between a few of the siblings regarding who would inherit what. Ethan did the best that he could to smooth things over, but as of right now Arlo and Lisa are still refusing to speak to one another and are both giving Ethan the cold shoulder.

Most of the problem stemmed from the fact that Judy left the house to Lisa and Roger and not to Arlo. The two of them immediately started bickering and nearly came to blows, and poor Ethan was caught in the middle. Darlene tried to intervene but was soundly rebuffed by Arlo and called all manner of not-so-nice names. She backed off after that. “My sixth graders listen better than he does,” she ruefully lamented.

Fortunately nobody seemed bothered by the fact that Ian inherited most of the monetary assets. It only made sense since he was still so young and had little else to call his own. Once all the dust had finally settled he decided that it was time to strike out on his own. Ian took the inheritance money and bought the old Clavell place.

Elysia wasn't terribly thrilled about the idea. Not that she would miss Ian all that much (they don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things) but she was seriously going to miss Rembrandt.

I on the other hand was rather glad to see the cat leave. Please don't get me wrong, I love animals, but I was definitely looking forward to not having to take allergy medication.

The day of the move was rather bittersweet. Ethan and Malcolm helped out with the heavy lifting while Darlene and I tasked ourselves with unpacking boxes and putting things away. It only took a few hours, and when all was said and done Ian surprised all of us with a delicious meal (It was even vegetarian! I was so pleased that he remembered!)

Before we left, Ethan turned to his brother and gave him a hug. “If you need anything at all, don't hesitate to call me. I've got your back.”

“That goes for me too,” Malcolm added. Ian smiled.

“Thanks. That means the world to me.”

It was a little bit quieter at home that night and for several days afterward, though the lull didn't last for too long. Two weeks later was a very special birthday for a very special girl.

Elysia turned thirteen.

She chose to forgo the traditional family party and invited her two best friends over for the fun. The two boys had celebrated their own thirteenth birthdays a couple of months earlier and seemed pretty excited that the last member of their group was about to join them. I think that Judd is the older of the two, but don't quote me on it.

My precious little girl isn't so little anymore. She is a stunningly beautiful young lady...and that scares the living daylights out of Ethan. He almost went into Overprotective Daddy Mode when he saw Dallas checking her out.

I snapped him out of it quickly enough. There was still one more thing that we needed to do to make the celebration complete. We wanted this birthday to be particularly special for Elysia and gave her a gift that she had been wanting for a long time.

Her own guitar.

Elysia is a natural. I don't know where she gets it from, either. Ethan swears that there is no one musical on his side of the family, and I can guarantee that she doesn't get it from my side. (Have you HEARD my mother sing? The phrase “screeching cat” comes to mind.)

Sigh...she is growing up so fast. Where has the time gone?

Happy birthday, Elysia! It's going to be tough to distinguish between Holly and Elysia now!  :P

Elysia looks exactly like Holly! It's too bad Lisa and Arlo are on the outs with Ethan, but then again they're pretty hard people to get along well with all the time. Love the chapter as usual, it's good to see them happy again. :)

Happy birthday Elysia! She is very very pretty as well. I agree with Audren, it's going to be difficult to tell the difference between the two.  ;D

Yeah, I was a bit worried about that at first as well. Fortunately Elly's face shape is just different enough, and her lips are much fuller than those of her mother. So long as I keep them in different hairstyles we should be good to go. :P

Thank you all so much for the comments!

Chapter 25 – A Trio Becomes Two

Today has been...interesting to say the least. I had the pleasure of shaking hands with one of my favorite baseball players. The circumstances leading up to this meeting, however, were rather...disconcerting.

Perhaps I should back up a bit.

Today was our eighteenth wedding anniversary, and Holly and I planned to make it a special one. We had everything mapped out perfectly: both of us took time off from work and planned a full day together, starting out with a leisurely morning at home followed by a concert at the stadium, then dinner and dancing at our favorite nightclub to cap off the night.

The day started out perfectly. As Darlene has been known to say, that was the first sign that something was bound to go wrong.

We spent most of the morning lounging around in bed, just enjoying each other's company. I surprised Holly with a bouquet of roses and a box of organic chocolates, which she loved (apart from coffee chocolate is her biggest weakness). Then she turned around and surprised me with a special edition print of my all-time favorite novel. Does she know me well or what?

Once we finally got moving we picked up a quick brunch at the Bistro and headed over to the stadium for the concert. Our favorite band was in town for a one day engagement, and they certainly did not disappoint. One of these days we're going to have to take a trip to Bridgeport and see them on their home turf, and maybe pick up a few other shows while we're there. I know that Elysia would love the experience.

It was just shy of 5 o' clock when we finally made it out of the stadium. At this point we were getting a little bit tired, but we figured we would stick to plan and at least have dinner and drinks at the club, even if we weren't quite up to dancing. Of course, if you order one of the wild party drinks...you can't help but start dancing anyway.

We were having a blast. The music was fantastic, the company was great, and Holly looked gorgeous. I almost didn't hear my cell phone go off and really had no intention of checking it, but something prompted me to take a peek. It was a text message from Darlene:

Come home NOW. Bad stuff. Police involved.

That was enough to put Holly and I in panic mode. We got home in record time (I'm surprised that my old truck can still drive that fast). Certainly enough, there was a police car in front of the house, as well as another vehicle that I was not familiar with. Quickly Holly and I ran into the house, unsure of what awaited us inside.

The first thing that I noticed was Elysia's friend Judd laying on the couch with an ice pack on his head, Malcolm right beside him giving him the once-over. A police officer was sitting on one of the chairs in the far corner of the room, alternately surveying the scene and scribbling furiously in her black notebook. Not far away stood Elysia, who looked more than a little distraught as she spoke with a dark-haired man whom I didn't quite recognize at first.

She looked up and noticed us, and I could tell that she had been crying. Elysia ran into Holly's arms and just buried her head into her mother's shoulder.

“Sweetheart, what happened?” I asked.

“D...Dallas and Judd got into a fight,” Elysia began, her voice quivering. “I don't know what happened. Judd wasn't doing anything to provoke it, and Dallas just snapped!”

“What?!” I couldn't hide the shock in my voice. “Dallas?”

“Yeah, and if Uncle Malcolm hadn't intervened when he did it would have been even worse.” I looked over at my brother-in-law, who shook his head.

“It wasn't a fight. More like Dallas was beating the living daylights out of him,” Malcolm explained, anger clearly audible in his voice. “Fortunately the injuries are minimal. He appears to have a minor concussion, but otherwise just a few bumps and bruises.”

I could hardly believe what I was hearing. This was the same boy that had practically lived in our back yard for several summers running, and now all of the sudden he had turned on one of his best friends. What in the world had happened with this kid?

“All right, I have all of the witness statements and the photographs,” the police officer spoke up. She looked over at the dark-haired man. “Now, Mr. Sekemoto, are you certain that you don't want to press charges?”

“Positive.”

That was when I realized who he was. Leighton Sekemoto, the superstar first-baseman of our home team, just happened to be the father of my daughter's best friend. I don't know why I never made that connection before. Now was not, however, the time to be star-struck...

“Very well then,” the officer replied. “I will still be paying a visit to the Steel household for a good long chat with Mister Dallas. The last thing that Sunset Valley needs is another delinquent roaming the streets.” She looked down at Judd and smiled. “It looks like you're well taken care of, young man. If you have any questions or any further problems, please don't hesitate to give me a call.”

“Thanks, Officer Rose,” Judd replied. The officer excused herself, stopping briefly to acknowledge Holly before heading out the door. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Judd's father approaching me.

“Doctor Bunch, am I correct?”

“Yes sir,” I answered, shaking his hand and trying not to seem as nervous as I was. “Pleased to meet you, Mr. Sekemoto.”

“Pff, just call me Leighton. I'm actually a bit surprised that we've never met before, considering how long these two have been hanging around each other.” He heaved a sigh. “It's a shame that this has to be under such...unpleasant circumstances.”

“I'm just grateful that it wasn't worse.”

“Yeah, I hear you. I never thought I'd see that trio fall apart...” His voice trailed off as something caught his attention behind me. “Though something tells me that this pair is in it for the long haul.”

I followed his gaze to the couch, where Judd was now sitting up...and Elysia had her arm around his shoulders.

Perhaps something good would come out of this experience after all. :)

(A/N: I wasn't quite sure who to pair Elly up with at first, but then story progression made the decision for me when Dallas aged up with the Mean Spirited trait.)

Yes, I would've chosen Judd if I were you too. And if this "friendship" goes to plan, then Elysia would be with the son of a famous sportsman.  :D Not that that is not the only good thing about him.  ::)

Not to mention that Ethan might be subconsciously more lenient towards the son of his favourite ballplayer in terms of romance.  ;)

That seriously made me giggle. :)

Judd does indeed have a bit more going for him aside from his father's fame. He aged up with one particular trait that matches Elly perfectly, which will probably come to light in the next chapter or two. Actually...probably this next one, as this time around I'm letting Elysia do the talking. :)

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 26

Chapter 26 – Romance, Aging and Toddler Cuteness

So Mom is too busy to write, Dad’s about lost his mind, Auntie Darlene is busy trying to potty train my little cousin, and Uncle Malcolm is finishing up medical school and hasn’t been home much lately.

Guess that leaves the updating to me, right?

Where did we leave off...oh yeah, the Dallas incident. Ugh. Thankfully nothing more came of it. I heard through the grapevine that his father grounded him for an entire month after Officer Rose paid him a visit. Since then he has mostly just ignored me and Judd, and that's fine by me.

Before anyone even asks I'll just come out and say it: YES, we are officially dating, which came as a surprise to pretty much no one except for the two of us. I mean come on, Judd and I have been best buddies since we were in kindergarten. It's not like either of us expected to start having those sort of warm and fuzzy feelings for one another. It just sort of...happened, I guess. Maybe I've had feelings for him all along and just didn't know it. I'm not sure.

Odd...it took Judd getting beaten up for me to realize how much I actually cared for him.

Both of us are in the same music class after school, which is a lot of fun. On the days that we don't have class we usually either head over to his house or mine, quickly get our homework done, and then start jamming.

Our parents have gotten used to it by now. Dad calls him “a part of the furniture”.

He was a bit dubious at first, but in the past several months my dad has really warmed up to the idea that Judd and I are together. I think that part of the problem was that he had a hard time believing that I was even old enough to date...rather, that HE was old enough to have a daughter old enough to date.

He and Mom hit the big 4-0 this year, and he hasn't been taking it well.

Mom's birthday was first, and she's been so crazy busy that she barely had time for a celebration. Something about a long-standing case breaking wide open or something like that...? She won't give any details.

Still as elegant as ever, Mom. I hope that I look that good when I'm forty.

A few days later it was Dad's turn. We wanted to plan a big birthday bash for him but he would have nothing of it.

Ever heard of the phrase “aging gracefully”? Dad most certainly does NOT fit that description. In his case it's more like aging kicking and screaming. He has been obsessing over gray hairs (What? All ten of them?) and freaks out over the slightest wrinkle.

Mom calls it a “mid-life crisis”. She tries her best to reassure him that he's still the same handsome man she fell in love with in high school (and other such gooshy nonsense).

I usually excuse myself from the room when that happens.

Not too much is going on with the rest of the household, well, other than Uncle Malcolm finishing up medical school. He has been working some crazy hours and hasn't gotten a lot of sleep lately, but he still takes the time to be with Iris as much as he can.

Even if it's just mutual nap time.

Of course he and my auntie are still sweet on each other, though thankfully they're more discreet about it than my parents are. I don't know what I'd do if I was confronted with PDA from both sides.

Ah well. I guess I'm really not one to talk, considering...

I think I'll just leave it at that. Let's just hope that Dad doesn't kill me for posting that last photograph...

(A/N: Thanks again for reading!)
