Another great update! I was not expecting Lisa to join the Military or to dump VJ. Good on Lisa!  :) I'm pleased that Ethan is fine now, and yes, he should not have signed up for the testing.

Story Progression has done some interesting things with Lisa, and those aren't the half of it. :P She has a kid now by one of the most unlikely pairings I've ever seen...

Thanks!

Wow, I can't wait to read that one!

Chapter 18 – A Long Awaited Birthday Party

Please forgive our absence! I cannot believe that it has been over a year since either Ethan or I have bothered to update our weblog. Life seems to speed forward when you are both working full time and trying to raise a young child. All that I can say is thank the Heavens above that Darlene lives with us and doesn't mind helping out.

Ethan has started specializing in infectious disease research and is now taking advanced classes in addition to his normal duties in the emergency room. While it is nice that he doesn't have to work too many extra hours, admittedly his new fascination with various pathogens and their effects on Simkind can be a bit...unsavory at times. (The life cycle of the Strangetown parasite does not make for pleasant dinner conversation!)

He is now also in charge of holding the annual vaccination clinic in Central Park. One of his first patients this year was his mother, who despises needles but hates Simfluenza even more.

My career has taken an interesting turn. A few months ago I decided to apply for the new position that opened up in the forensics lab, and that very afternoon Justine called me into her office to tell me that I had the job! I was excited, though not nearly so excited as Ethan. He was not terribly thrilled about the idea of me being out on the streets, though he never said it out loud. Not that Sunset Valley is a particularly violent city, but the risk of being injured on the job was always there, and after having more than a few close calls I'm more than happy to don a lab coat instead of a bullet-proof vest.

It's still a messy job though. You have to do what you have to do to get the evidence. Fortunately the precinct has good showers.

Our little girl isn't so little anymore. Elysia is four years old now and will be starting kindergarten next year. Where has the time gone?

She has turned into quite the chatterbox. The other day when Malcolm was over she probably spent a good half an hour jabbering on about everything from playing in the sandbox to eating ice cream. Elysia probably would have gone on for a lot longer, but Ethan finally rescued our guest and took her outside to play.

Malcolm has been a frequent visitor, probably even moreso now than when he was still in high school. Not long ago I asked him why, and his simple reply was “Avoiding Mom.”

Instead of following in his mother's footsteps as was long expected, Malcolm has chosen to follow his father and began medical school a few months back. Nancy was not terribly enthusiastic about his decision, but naturally Geoffrey was thrilled.

Malcolm confided to me that he had no interest whatsoever in the family business, or even the family fortune. “Mom is not a happy person,” he explained. “She is constantly worried about profit margins and dealing with the shareholders, meanwhile leaving poor Dad in the dust. I don't want that. I don't want to live a miserable life for the sake of a few extra simoleons in my pocket. There are some things that are just not worth it.” I caught him stealing a glance at Darlene. “Sometimes...it's the less tangible things that are worth far, far more.”

Malcolm has an amazing maturity for a man of not even twenty years. He knows what he wants in life and is not afraid to reach for it, even if it means going against his mother's wishes.

Today was the day that he and Darlene have been looking forward to for nearly two years now—Darlene's eighteenth birthday. It started out in a rather bizarre fashion, however.

We were all sitting at the table eating breakfast when Ethan's cell phone rang. It was Judy, and from the sound of her voice something was definitely not right. She divulged the rather unexpected news that Lisa was pregnant. What was even more unexpected (and ever-so-slightly disturbing) was who the father was: Iqbal Alvi. Lisa was pregnant by her ex-boyfriend's father. Ethan immediately started choking on his pancakes and Darlene looked like she was about to be sick. By the time that phone conversation was over the only one of us still eating was Elysia, who cheerfully requested more syrup for her last pancake. Oh to be young and blissfully innocent...

Darlene's birthday party was small and simple, with just us, Malcolm, and her two best friends Mortimer and Bella. Jack and Judy stopped by long enough to give her a birthday gift, but couldn't stick around for cake (something about Jack and a doctor's appointment). They certainly missed out on something amazing...and it wasn't just the cake.

As it turned out, the best was yet to come. Once the cake was finished Malcolm called everyone into the living room. He had his own birthday gift for Darlene and wasted no time in getting down on one knee...

Needless to say her answer was an emphatic yes. Time to start planning a wedding!

(A/N: Confession time: I stole Mortimer and Bella too. :P Story progression never seems to get the two of them together in my games, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

When I saw the notification pop up with Lisa and Iqbal I just about choked! VJ wound up with Tamara Donner and, as of the current gameplay, has one baby with a second on the way.)

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa you silly girl! Don't you know how creepy it is? And, there's a chance your kid will have a uni-brow!
Congratulations Darlene and Malcolm, I wish you many years of happiness.  :D

Creepy...and sort of gross, actually. Lisa is thereabouts 22, and Iqbal would probably be in his mid-sixties. Ugh, I think I just made it worse. :P

\And, there's a chance your kid will have a uni-brow!

Oh gosh, I hadn't thought about the unibrow.  :o

I just played through the wedding, and I can't wait to get it posted...but there is another chapter that has to come first, one that isn't terribly pleasant, and I'm actually kind of struggling with it somewhat.

Thank you all so much for reading!

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 19
« Reply #98 on: September 02, 2012, 08:25:49 PM »
(A/N: Just to warn you...there is a good chance you may need a tissue for this. I know that I did while writing it.)

Chapter 19 – When Celebration Becomes Sorrow

There are so many things that we should be celebrating right now. My daughter's birthday, Darlene's impending nuptials, the recent birth of Lisa's son. Yet there is no celebration. There is no joy in the Bunch family...

...because one of us is no longer here.

Monday was Elysia's fifth birthday, a day that came with much eager anticipation. As had become our custom we kept things simple, just a small family party with cake and (per Elysia's request) plenty of chocolate ice cream. She dressed up in her favorite outfit and couldn't wait to blow out the candles.

My gosh, she looks so much like her mother.

The celebration was short-lived. That night while we were eating supper my pager unexpectedly went off, which startled me slightly since I wasn't on-call. I pulled out my cell phone and dialed the hospital dispatcher. There had to be some sort of mistake.

“Sacred Spleen Emergency Department.”

“Hey, it's Ethan. I think you got the wrong pager. I'm not on-call tonight,” I explained to the dispatcher.

“Doctor Wolff was the one who told me to call you specifically. We have a critical cardiac case that's being brought into the emergency room as we speak.”

“Is that Ethan?” That was Morgana's voice.

“Yes, ma'am.” I heard a brief rustling sound as the dispatcher handed over the phone.

“Ethan, it's Morgana. You need to get down here immediately.” She paused. “The cardiac case that's being brought in...it's your father.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

“I'm on my way.”

I ran for the door, only barely stopping long enough to briefly tell Holly what was happening.

The drive to the hospital never felt so slow, yet I knew I was speeding (and hoping that there weren't any police officers around to catch me). I raced into the emergency room just as the paramedic team was bringing him in. My eyes instantly honed in on the EMT pushing the gurney; it was my future brother-in-law, and from the look of fear in Malcolm's eyes...this was not a good situation.

“He went into v-fib on us twice on the way here,” Jane (the other paramedic) stated. “We managed to shock him back, but the heartbeat is still irregular. No respiration”

“Get him into room 3 and continue ventilation,” Morgana ordered. “Doctor Morita, prepare the surgery team in case we need to go in for an open heart.”

“Done.”

A high-pitched alarm sounded from the heart monitor just as they got my father into the room. I glanced at the readout long enough to see that his heartbeat had ceased entirely. In the back of my mind I knew that his chances of pulling through this were slim and dwindling even more with each tick of the clock.

Morgana didn't miss a beat. “Malcolm, begin chest compressions. Jane, check his airway and continue ventilation. Doctor Bunch, get me 1 mg epinephrine and charge the defibrillator, stat!” Without hesitation I handed her the syringe and she administered the injection straight into his heart. No change. She grabbed the defibrillator paddles as I flipped the charge switch. “On three, stop compressions. One, two, three, clear!” Everyone moved out of the way as Morgana released the electrical charge.

No heartbeat.

“Come on, Jack...come on!” The defibrillator charged for a second time. “One, two, three, clear!”

The monitor displayed a flat line. Absently I checked for a pulse that I knew would not be there, choking back tears as Morgana turned off the defibrillator. It was over. There was nothing more that could be done.

“T...time of death?”

“Eight forty-nine.”

Dad was gone. I took his hand and just held it, letting the tears flow unchecked down my face. At this point I just didn't care. I was a doctor, a professional, but I was his son first. I felt a hand on my shoulder as Morgana came up behind me. “Do you want me to go speak to your family?” Adamantly I shook my head.

“No,” I quietly replied. “This...needs to come from me.”

It was the hardest thing that I have ever done, walking through the door to the waiting room knowing that what I was about to say would bring unimaginable grief to the people whom I cared about the most. What little composure I had began to crumble when I saw my mother and youngest brother sitting there in silence, fear and uncertainty clearly visible on their faces. Mom stood up as I approached, her eyes pleading.

“Ethan...no...please don't tell me that it's...that he's...”

I could hardly even look at her. “Doctor Wolff...did everything that she could. We couldn't bring him back, Mom.”

She fell into my arms, sobbing. In that bare instant her world shattered into a million pieces. And there was nothing at all that I could do.

Going home that night I felt defeated, empty. Holly greeted me at the door and, without saying a word, took me into her embrace.

Today, five days later, we laid Dad to rest. It was a beautiful ceremony, truth be told. He was buried with full military honors, and at the end of it all Major Kennedy presented my mother with a folded flag in commemoration of his lifelong service to Simnation and her people.

Slowly everyone began to leave as the morning waned into afternoon. Lisa was the first of the family to go, not surprising since she was technically supposed to still be on bed rest (she had given Doctor Jolina a few not-so-nice words when it was recommended that she stay home). Next was Arlo, who barely said two words the entire time and left without so much as a goodbye. I had Holly take Ian home with her and Elysia when they left a short time later, and Darlene and Malcolm made their exit not long after that.

Mom stood there in front of Dad's stone, her face a mask of sorrow. I could not even imagine what she had been going through during these past several days. The five of us had lost our father...but she lost the love of her life, her partner of thirty-five years, her best friend. I came up behind her and placed an arm around her slumped shoulders. My mother, always the one who comforted me, always the one who bandaged my wounds, always the one to tell me that it would all be okay. Now it was her that needed the comforting.

“Are you going to be all right?”

She let out a sigh. “Eventually, perhaps. I need to be, for Ian's sake if for nothing else.” Mom turned to look at me. “You know, your father is...was...proud of you. You turned into a fine man.” She hesitated. “Please stop trying to blame yourself for this.”

I felt more tears coming to my eyes. “Mom, how did you...?”

“I just know you. You were always your own worst critic.” She placed both hands on my shoulders and looked me directly in the eyes. “This was not your fault, Ethan, nor was it Doctor Wolff. You gave your dad the best chance he had to survive. It just...was not meant to be. He was too far gone, and no amount of medicine, no amount of wishing, no amount of praying could have brought him back.”

“I know...” My voice trailed off. “It's just...why did it have to be Dad?”

“I don't think we will ever know. Life has no rhyme or reason sometimes. It just is.” Mom took me into her embrace. “And sometimes, it hurts more than you think you can possibly bear.”

“I'm here for you Mom. Always. We will get through this.”

“As I am for you.” A brief hint of a grin played on her lips. “Besides, I have grandchildren to spoil. I can't just give up now.”

I smiled. “Ready to go home?”

She smiled back. “I think so.”

As we walked away I took one final glance at my father's stone and the words etched upon it.

Jackson Timothy Bunch
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Rest in eternal peace.

So long, Dad.

(A/N: Please forgive any inaccuracies in the hospital scene. I did some research, but I'm not a doctor...so I'm sure I messed something up.

The next chapter will be a lot more jovial, I promise. :)

Many thanks for reading. I greatly appreciate it!)

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 20
« Reply #103 on: September 05, 2012, 05:45:58 AM »
(Thank you all so much...that was an exceedingly emotional chapter to write. I had not expected Jack to go so quickly (Buster Clavell was still alive!), and it was rather sad that he happened to die on Elysia's child birthday. :(

Now as promised, a much more cheerful chapter. :) )

Chapter 20 – The Marriage of Two Pyromaniacs

The past few months have been a bit rough, but slowly things are going back to normal. Ethan took some time off of work to help Judy tie up a few loose ends and take care of all of the legal paperwork as far as the house was concerned (the title was in Jack's name). Meanwhile, he and Darlene have taken it upon themselves to help Ian get back on track with his schoolwork. They have taken turns tutoring him after school three days a week and so far it seems to have helped.

Would you believe that Darlene is working on getting her teacher's certificate? It came as quite a surprise to pretty much everyone. Once Darlene graduated from high school everyone in the family, myself included, thought that she would follow Arlo and become a firefighter, or maybe join the military as Lisa had. Never anything so sedate as being a schoolteacher. We should have known that Darlene never does the expected. She doesn't fit into any sort of mold and rarely, if ever, conforms to anyone's expectations. You know the term “marching to the beat of one's own drum?” Forget the drum; she has her own fife and bugle corps.

Sometimes the things she concocts in her head are downright insane. A few weekends ago, for example, she and Malcolm took a road trip to Bridgeport for the weekend and came back with an armload of fireworks. In her infinite wisdom Darlene decided that it would be fun to set them all off at once in the front yard.

Once all of the smoke had cleared and the neighborhood dogs had stopped freaking out, Hank showed up with lights and sirens blaring and wrote her a noise violation ticket. Darlene said the adrenaline rush was more than worth the 150 simoleon fine. I told her she was crazy.

So what did her future husband have to say about it? “Next time we should do this at Pinochle Pond, that way we don't run the risk of getting caught. Then maybe we can set up a timing device and set off even more!”

Oh brother...

Elysia was certainly impressed by the display, until she calculated that 150 simoleons was an entire five months' allowance and there was no WAY that she would be doing anything like that. Smart girl. :)

She is just loving school so far and has already made quite a few friends. One of them, Judd I think is his name, is in her class and has been over to the house a couple of times. He's a cute kid, a little jumpy, but nice enough. The other day his mother (who happens to be Parker's aunt) called to see if I would allow Elly to come over for a sleepover with a few of the kids from their class. I didn't see any harm in it, and neither did Ethan, so we said yes. To say that she was excited would be a serious understatement.

In reality, though, we had an ulterior motive; the sleepover was rather conveniently timed, because that was the night of Darlene's bachelorette party. I dropped Elly off at the Sekemoto house and gave her a kiss goodnight, told her to behave (“I'll be good, mommy.”), and headed back home just in time for the chaos to begin.

The fizzy nectar was already flowing freely.

“Ohh no you don't!”

“Ohh, yes I am!”

Bella was soaked to the skin and laughing her head off. We found out later that she and Mortimer had recently eloped (much to the chagrin of Bella's parents) and were technically on their honeymoon, so Darlene stopped everything mid-dance and dedicated a toast to the new couple.

Between all of the dancing and fizzy nectar everyone was having a fantastic time. Even Darlene's boss managed to loosen up a little bit.

Ethan and Malcolm came back around midnight from their own night out (hanging out at the pub with Michael and Parker) and couldn't help joining in the rowdiness.

We all had an absolute blast. By the time the night was over most of us had passed out on the floor. There was one heck of a mess to clean up that next morning (Nectar everywhere! My poor carpet!), but it was very much worth the trouble to give my favorite little sister the proper send-off into married life.

Today was the big day and it could not have been more perfect.

Malcolm and Darlene had opted for a more casual affair at the beach rather than having the ceremony at his parents' estate as his mother had wanted. The location was breathtakingly beautiful, so was the ceremony, and needless to say, so was the bride.

Words cannot begin to do it justice.

There was hardly a dry eye at the place by the time the ceremony was over. Nancy was practically bawling (“I cannot believe my baby boy is grown up!”), and I even caught Mortimer sniffling a bit (“What? I have allergies.”).

I have to say...it was heartwarming to see Judy finally smiling again.

The cake was fantastic and we wound up dancing for hours. Then, just as the party was starting to wind down, Darlene pulled a stunt that only she would do.

She had been hiding a pair of firework shells in her garter belt. As she set them on the sand, she looked up in the sky and smiled. “This is for you, Dad!”

It was an appropriate end to an amazing wedding. Congratulations, Malcolm and Darlene Landgraab, and may you have many wonderful years together. Preferably without having to visit the emergency room or the burn ward.

Congratulations to the two of them! It was heart-warming to know that Judy was smiling once more, and it was very kind and sweet for Darlene to set off a firework in commemoration for her Dad.
