Now I'm pretty certain of who it is.  :D
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0.

Just read the story. It is really well written with the nice cliff-hangers and dramatic moments. Also, the title suits it very well. I am looking forward to another update.

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 8

Sorry I've taken so long to update. I got caught up in the gameplay. I'm actually a few years ahead of what I have written so far and there was some amusing stuff happening. :P

Thanks again for reading!

Chapter 8 – The Difference Three Weeks Makes

It's amazing how quickly things can happen in life. In the span of three weeks my life has changed completely in ways that I never would have imagined even a year ago.

Finals week was challenging to say the least, but nothing that either of us couldn't handle. Not to say that it wasn't stressful though; there were many nights where we were awake past midnight trying to cover all of the study material. Needless to say coffee became a very dear friend. (I'll take mine with a teaspoon of sugar and a splash of cream, thanks.)

We did take a little bit of time out in the middle of the week for a small celebration. Holly's birthday was on Thursday. She didn't want us to make a big deal out of it, but Mom wanted this birthday to be special for her.

Holly looked absolutely stunning.

Our last final was on Monday, and both of us breathed a sigh of relief when it was finally over. That night everyone surprised me with a birthday party. I hadn't expected anything since things have been so crazy lately, but I'll take chocolate cake any time I can get it. :P

Not bad, eh?

We found out the good news the next day—both of us passed our finals with flying colors and would be graduating with honors. Better still, Holly discovered that she would be named valedictorian of our graduating class! (All right, I have to admit that I was a little bit jealous. Her GPA edged me out by two hundredths of a point. Not that I'm competitive or anything...she truly deserves the honor, especially given what she had to overcome to reach it.)

Wednesday was the big day. The eight of us packed into the two family cars and headed to City Hall for the graduation ceremony. Of course the superintendent had to bore us silly with a ridiculously long speech, but at this point the end was in sight. One by one our names were read as we walked across the stage to receive our diplomas and awards. Holly, Michael, then me, Bebe, Parker, and River.

It was finally over. Childhood was now behind us all, and the future was wide open in front of us.

There wasn't much time for celebration afterward. Both Holly and I had places to go. A few months back Holly determined that she wanted a career in law enforcement. Her reason: if she couldn't turn her parents around at the very least she could try to stop them. The question was, which branch: field officer or lab technician? She went on a ride-along with Officer Goddard that afternoon then toured the lab with Agent Keaton. So far Holly is still undecided, but she has plenty of time since the initial training is the same for both.

As for me...

I submitted my application to Sacred Spleen at the suggestion of Doctor Landgraab.

He returned for a follow-up appointment with Darlene a few days after my parents came back from their vacation, and we wound up talking for a good half hour afterward. The hospital has been looking for a few new recruits to join their surgical training program, and he seemed to think that I might be a good fit for the position.

“It's not a career track for the faint of heart, though. You will be challenged, you will have to work long hours for little reward at first. There will be late nights, there will be frustration, and there will be pain.”

“Is it worth it?” I asked. The doctor looked me directly in the eyes.

“The moment you save a life that would have otherwise been lost. That's when you know that it's truly worthwhile.”

Last week I got the news: they had accepted my application.

Wow.

Even with all of the amazing things that have happened in the past three weeks, however, none of them can even begin to compare to what happened today.

Holly met me at Central Park this afternoon after work. I told her that I just wanted to get away from the house for a while and have a picnic. That was only partially true. There was something that I needed to do...

“Ethan, what are you...oh my gosh...”

I smiled, hoping to hide my nervousness. No. Not nervous. Terrified would be a better word for it.

“Holly,” I began, “would you do me the honor of being my wife?”

Gently I took her left hand and placed the ring on her finger. She began to cry.

“Oh Ethan...yes! Of course I will marry you!”

What a difference a mere three weeks can make. Three weeks ago I was still in high school. Three weeks ago I was still unsure of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

Three weeks ago I wasn't engaged to my best friend.

Life is amazing.

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 9

Chapter 9 – Hurry Up and Wait

It's been a long eight months.

Ethan and I announced our engagement to his parents that night, and neither of them were surprised. Judy gave me a big hug and said “Welcome to the family, dear.”

We didn't get such a warm reception from my parents. Yes...I actually e-mailed mother to tell her the news. She gave me a half-hearted congratulations and then proceeded to go on a tirade about how I was marrying beneath my standing.

Perhaps I should have contacted father instead. Despite his nasty side, at least he has some compassion when it comes to family affairs...

Sigh.

We're still living with Ethan's family for the time being, trying to save what money we can so we can eventually buy our own place. It hasn't been an easy go of it, but we're almost there. Starting pay at both of our jobs is rather paltry and neither of us are advancing as quickly as we'd like. Ethan did get a promotion the other day...to bed pan cleaner. Grossness aside, at least it's a promotion. (Though I have noticed that he is showering a lot more frequently...)

The other day we got some exciting news: Parker and Bebe got engaged! I'm so excited for the both of them! River hasn't been quite so lucky though. There have been many nights when she has called me in tears from yet another bad date. I feel so bad for her. She is such a sweet girl and deserves so much better.

Life in the Bunch household is still crazy. A few weeks back Darlene had a massive slumber party with her friends. She invited everybody that she knew and everyone showed up except for Mortimer (his parents refused). Imagine if you will a living room crammed with eight sleeping bags, eight knapsacks, and eight children all under the age of thirteen, plus enough pizza and soda to feed half of the military base.

Imagine now that you were suddenly “volunteered” to chaperone this event.

Insanity doesn't quite describe it.

(To be fair, Jack and Judy had plans for that night that were made months in advance, but they at least could have warned Ethan and I beforehand...)

The oldest out of all of them was Miraj (VJ's brother, poor kid), who is twelve and in middle school. Next was Malcolm who will be twelve in less than a month, then Darlene at ten. Bella is nine, Cora and Skip are eight, and Sam and Sandi rounded out the pack at seven.

For the most part the night went off without a hitch. Well, except for when Darlene told a particularly scary ghost story and scared the living daylights out of Sandi. (Screaming first-grader. Enough said.) Then there was a mild case of pizza-fueled indigestion involving Malcolm (solved by ginger ale) and Skip and Sam got into a minor argument about the movie. Everyone had a good time though, and Ethan and I got to reap the benefits of leftover pizza.

Out of the blue during breakfast a few mornings later Darlene asked the question “What's a promise ring?”

Judy looked at her with wide eyes.

“Why do you ask?”

“Because Miraj just said that his brother gave one to Lisa the other day.”

I thought that Judy was going to pass out.

Darlene never did find out what a promise ring was, but Lisa certainly heard an earful.

Oh...I should also mention that we received some bad news two months ago. Despite a strong showing on her opponent's side mother did actually win the race for mayor. Oh Sunset Valley...if only you realized what you just got yourself into...

We haven't yet set a date for the wedding. Ethan and I are hoping to wait until we get a house first, whenever that will be...

I hope we don't have to wait too much longer.

(Author's Note: I came into this story project with the idea that I'd snatch Ethan as quickly as I could and get the heck out of there, but I have to admit I kind of enjoy playing the Bunch family. Darlene has grown into a favorite of mine...I am definitely going to have to do more with her later on...

Hope you enjoy!)

Thanks much! It's hard not to feel bad for Arlo. His traits aren't too bad, but good Heavens that face. :(

Now for the fun part. :)

Chapter 10 – Shock, Awe, and Fizzy Nectar

Ugh. I have a splitting headache.

Dad took it upon himself to throw me a bachelor party, which was last night. But I digress...a lot of things have happened in the last several months.

Holly and I had been saving for quite some time in hopes of buying our own home. We almost had enough saved up to get a small place on Water Lily Lane. It's not too glamorous of a location, but not horrible when you're first starting out. Nothing much, just a place that we could call our own.

All of that changed back in February when Holly received a mysterious letter in the mail...from her father.

Dear Holly,

After much soul-searching I have come to realize that I have failed you as a father. We have always had our differences and I was never able to respect them. For that I apologize. You know that I am not one for shameless platitudes, so I will keep this brief. You are a young woman now, beginning a new life. Consider this a late graduation gift. Or an early wedding gift. Or both. Regardless, I wish you well.

Best regards,

Nicholas P. Alto

Included in the letter was a check for thirty-thousand simoleons.

Holly and I were absolutely dumbfounded. Was this some sort of bribe to try and keep us from speaking out against her mother, or was Nick actually trying in his own way to make amends for what they did to Holly? We didn't know what to think. At first we were somewhat leery about accepting such a sizable sum of money, especially given the rather dubious nature of the Alto's business practices. We ultimately came to the conclusion that we would use only what we needed to purchase a decent house, then donate the rest to charity.

So that is exactly what we did. Between that gift and the money we had already saved we were able to have a house built not too far from my parents' house (one house down from the corner of Maywood and Landgraab Avenue). We move in next week.

Holly and I were finally able to set a wedding date, which will be the Saturday after we move. Mom questioned the wisdom of planning such a major event so quickly after a move, but neither Holly nor I want to wait any longer.

Which brings us back to the bachelor party.

Dad decided that he wanted to throw a big party for me before moving day. I wasn't so sure about the idea (I'm not really much of a party animal) but he managed to talk me into it. The plan was that Mom would take the younger Bunches out of the house for dinner and a movie while the party took place. Arlo protested. Loudly.

“Aw, come on! It's not like its every day when my big brother has a party like this!”

Mom shook her head. “You're fourteen years old—FAR too young to be attending something like this. You're coming with us whether you like it or not.”

“Mom, this is me we're talking about,” I interjected. “I don't really think that the party will get too wild.” She glared at me.

“Ethan, you're not helping.”

“He's right Judy,” came Dad's reply. “Besides, it's a once in a lifetime experience. And if for some unknown reason the party should get a little crazy, I will send him upstairs.”

Mom was cornered.

“Oh all right! You had better behave yourself, young man.” She looked at Dad. “And that goes for you too.”

“Sweet!” Arlo cheered.

So at about six Mom and Holly took Lisa, Darlene, and Ian out to the Corsican for dinner, which is about when everybody started showing up. Dustin, Parker, and Boyd were the first to arrive and things immediately started getting interesting...

Arlo seemed more interested in pizza than the other goings-on, which was a good thing when the party was suddenly invaded by scantily-clad dancers. I looked at Dad, who shrugged his shoulders. There was only one other person who would have thought of this.

“Parker...”

“Whaaat?” He flashed his trademark grin. “It's a bachelor party, man!”

Speaking of bachelor, Michael finally arrived an hour later. He confided that he was actually a bit nervous about being here and almost didn't come. The reason? My dad is now his commanding officer. He enlisted in the military shortly after graduating last year. Dad reassured him that we were all here for a good time and just to relax. It took him a while, but slowly the old, happy-go-lucky Mike returned and he was spraying everyone with nectar like the rest of us.

Mom, Holly, and the rest came home a little bit earlier than expected. My two sisters were instantly shooed upstairs, where Arlo had retreated a good half hour before (he thought it was getting boring). Much to my surprise both Mom and Holly started getting into the fun.

I grabbed Holly and kissed her deeply, eliciting a loud “Ooooh” from the crowd. My beloved fianceé, with a wicked glint in her eye, responded by spraying me with a bottle of fizzy nectar.

We lost Boyd for a while when he passed out in the dining room.

Then Parker.

Michael meanwhile decided to enjoy the hot tub. I'm not so sure why he was wearing a duck.

Things started getting a little fuzzy after that. I remember Holly and I dancing together and spraying each other with more nectar. And I think I remember seeing Mom and Dad in their...um...unmentionables. I wish I didn't remember that, actually.

The next thing I knew it was morning. Or was it afternoon? I'm still not sure. Holly and I had made it back up to our room but passed out before we could even reach the bed. It was one heck of a party, but all of us are paying the price. A word of advice: don't overdo it on the nectar. You WILL regret it.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go get an ice pack for my head...

Chapter 11 – The Alto Bride

Moving day came and went without a hitch. Well...I suppose one minor hitch. Ethan and I were going through our room making sure that we hadn't missed anything when suddenly we heard a light knocking at the door.

“Come in!” I called.

The door slowly opened, revealing a very teary-eyed Darlene on the other side.

“What's wrong?” Ethan asked.

“I...I don't want you guys to leave!” She wailed. “It's not gonna be any fun without my favorite brother and sister around!”

Ethan heaved a sigh. He had been expecting this to a certain degree given how close he and Darlene were. “Holly and I are not moving far away. You can always come and visit.”

“Yeah, but that won't be the same,” she pouted. “Now I'm stuck with Lisa and Arlo and they're both weird. Mom and Dad are so busy with Ian and work that I don't hardly get any attention at ALL.”

Ethan and I exchanged glances. She was right on the money with that one.

I gave her a hug then looked her directly in the eyes. “Let me make you a deal. If you promise to call first and make sure it's okay, you can come over any time you want. You can even spend the night if it's all right with Mom and Dad.”

Darlene's eyes lit up. “Really?”

I saw Ethan smiling out of the corner of my eye. “Yes, really,” he replied. “But you need to make sure that you behave here at home. You need to be a good big sister for Ian.”

“Like you were a good big brother for me. I think I can do it.” Her smile faded slightly. “I'm still gonna miss you though.”

I was going to miss her too, actually. We had gotten to know each other quite well in the last several months. She is a sweet girl who just wants a bit of love and attention. In many ways she reminds me of myself, although I was never quite so outgoing. I have a feeling that we are going to be seeing a lot of her after we move.

We finished packing everything into Ethan's truck and made our way to our new home. Walking into the place was a touch surreal; it was a LOT larger than I had imagined it when we first made the plans with the architect. Three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room, kitchen/dining room combo, and a good sized back yard. It's a pretty nice place. The architect did a fantastic job, and even came in under budget!

And then came Saturday, the most amazing day of my life. The day when I left the name Alto behind and took the name of the man I love.

We wanted to keep everything simple, just family (Ethan's, certainly not mine) and friends, nothing more. Bebe and River took me out shopping a few days before the wedding and helped me pick out an amazing dress and veil. I couldn't wait for Ethan to see me in it.

Saturday both Ethan and I were filled with nervous excitement. Most of the morning was spent either playing chess or watching television just so we could keep our minds occupied. Judy came over in mid-afternoon to help us with setting up, and Jack and the rest of the Bunch clan arrived just before five. I took that as my cue; it was time to get ready.

Once I had put on the gown I called Judy in to help me with my veil. Darlene came along with her.

“Wow...” I heard Darlene gasp. “You look so pretty!”

“Holly, you look stunning,” Judy said with a smile. After she had taken care of the veil she gave me a giant hug. “You have made my son so happy. He loves you so much, and I am positively thrilled to have you as part of the family.”

“Thank you. It means so much to me...” I began choking up. Family was something that I never truly had until I met Ethan. I wasn't just marrying the love of my life. I was marrying into a family. A close-knit, loving family. I could not possibly be happier.

All eyes were on me as I emerged from the dressing room. All of our friends were there, River and Bebe, Michael, even Parker (which surprised me since he and Bebe had broken up a few weeks before). My co-worker Justine was sitting next to Michael and already in tears, and much to my surprise Nancy was there as well.

But my eyes were on Ethan. There he stood, beneath the arch of carved wood and ivy, waiting for me. As the music began to play I walked toward him. My gosh, he looked handsome.

“Are you ready, my love?” He asked me.

“Yes.”

We turned to face each other, and I felt my heart racing. This was it. I was finally going to marry Ethan.

“I, Ethan Christopher Bunch, take you Holly to be my wife. I promise to love you and be faithful to you always, until death do us part.” He gently took my hand and placed the ring on my finger.

Barely holding back tears, I held out Ethan's ring and replied, “I, Holly Marie Alto, take you Ethan to be my husband. I also promise to love you and be faithful to you always, until death do us part.”

And then we kissed for the first time as husband and wife.

We cut the wedding cake (it was amazingly delicious) and spent the rest of the night dancing with our friends and just having a good time.

Well, most of the rest of the night, at least. :)

(A/N: Finally married! I've been really looking forward to this chapter! Thanks so much for reading, and let me know what you think!)
