What a beautiful wedding! I'm sorry Jack wasn't there to see it, but the firework was a perfect homage, and just the right touch of Darlene. I loved seeing Judy smile.

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 21
« Reply #107 on: September 08, 2012, 03:05:38 AM »
Katie, Apples, and Sadie - Thank you guys so much! It actually surprised me how well the wedding pictures turned out. I had never tried a wedding off of the home lot before, but I think that's how I'm going to do things from here on out.

Elly is adorable!

Wait 'til you see her as a teenager. :)

Chapter 21 – On Stress, Fractures, and Family Affairs

Chaos, disorder, insanity.

If your last name happens to be Bunch, you know all of these things well. I never thought that life could possibly get as crazy as it was when I was growing up. Turns out I was dead wrong.

Holly was promoted again in her job and was instantly thrown a serious curveball when her supervisor took an unexpected leave of absence. (Justine's husband was badly injured during a game...that was one emergency room call that I will not soon forget.) Suddenly Holly was in charge of investigating several outstanding cases with very little in the way of help.

For two months she was all but consumed by her work and stressed out beyond imagination. When Holly wasn't busy interviewing witnesses or rummaging through trash bins for evidence she was either analyzing her findings in the lab or writing up reports.

We hardly spent any time together save meals and bedtime, and even then she was so exhausted that she would fall asleep almost the instant she hit the pillow. It was admittedly rather frustrating at times, but I had to keep reminding myself that she put up with me when I was going through medical school; the least I could do was support her as best I could during this. It all worked out in the end though. Justine came back to work and Holly could finally breathe a sigh of relief. So could I—I finally had my wife back. :)

And for the record, Marty has healed and is now back in the game. Go Llamas!

(Yes, I'm a closet baseball fan.)

A month or so after all of that we were thrown another little curveball. One Wednesday morning I got a phone call from the school saying that Elysia was hurt during recess and that I needed to come pick her up. She was sitting on a cot in the nurse's office when I got there, bawling her eyes out with her left wrist on ice. According to the playground monitor Elysia was trying to make the jump from the monkey bars over to the swingset and missed, landing on her left side. The nurse thought that her wrist was most likely broken.

I brought her to the emergency room, where Geoffrey happened to be the physician on duty that day. He looked at me and quirked an eyebrow. “Can't stay away, can you? I give you a day off and you still wind up back here.”

“This one is trying to imitate her auntie,” I sighed. “She fell on the playground and landed on her side. The nurse thought that her wrist might be broken, and from the bruising and swelling I'm inclined to agree.”

“All right.” He crouched down to Elly's level and smiled. “We just need to take an x-ray of your arm. It won't hurt, I promise.”

“Okay.”

The pictures didn't lie; there was a hairline fracture of her radius a few inches above the wrist, which meant six weeks in a cast. Naturally she was devastated...that is, until Geoffrey told her that she could pick the color of the cast. Elysia chose hot pink.

All in all she handled the situation pretty well. Her two friends Dallas and Judd came over that afternoon to make sure that she was okay, and two days later her cast was covered in her classmates' signatures. It was a long six weeks, but the fracture healed well and Elly was back to her normal active self when all was said and done. Holly did, however, lecture her on playing safe on the playground.

The next few months were blissfully calm, and thankfully devoid of broken bones, though everything else seemed to break on us. You name it, chances are the blasted thing broke at some point: the desktop computer, the dishwasher, the faucet on the downstairs bathtub, Malcolm's laptop, even the kitchen sink. I've become quite adept at tackling these household repair jobs, so none of them were too terribly challenging.

Until the food replicator attempted to kill me.

I called a professional after that.

To make things more interesting, we were in the middle of renovating the house while all of this was going on. We added two new bedrooms to the basement, turned the second upstairs room into a suite, and revamped the third floor study into another bedroom with its own personal bath.

The reason?

Just about a month ago my mother and youngest brother moved in with us.

The reasoning behind it is far too complex to mention in its entirety (unless you wish to be here through next week), but most of it was that Mom just wanted a change of scenery for her and Ian. Holly and I talked things over with Darlene and Malcolm and we offered to have them stay here. It didn't take much convincing.

But with my mother and brother came the cat. Holly wasn't so keen on that part, but Elysia was more than thrilled. She and Rembrandt quickly became friends.

Mom is doing all right. Not great, not poorly, just kind of in the middle. She misses Dad terribly and I often find her in tears, though she brightens up considerably when Elly is with her. “Grandchildren are a wonderful thing,” she told us one afternoon. “Speaking of which...” She glanced over at Darlene and Malcolm. “You ARE planning on having a child at some point, right? Sooner rather than later I hope?”

Darlene and Malcolm just kind of looked at each other.

“Sooner,” Malcolm replied, a wicked grin on his face. “How does seven months from now sound?”

Mom's eyes widened. “Darlene, you're pregnant?!”

My little sister started giggling. “We just found out yesterday. We weren't planning to say anything until the holiday, but well...it's a hard secret to keep.”

Mom quite literally jumped for joy.

So now there are seven of us living here with an eighth on the way—just like how it was fourteen years ago when Holly moved in with us right before Ian was born. It's utter chaos...but in a good way.

(A/N: More nooboos! Thank you all so very much for reading. I hope you're enjoying the story as much as I enjoy writing it!)

Ah, full house again! How nice of them to invite Judy and Ian. But that was to be expected wasn't it - the Bunches are a very nice family all around.

I'm glad there are more nooboos on the way! I love this family more and more with every new chapter. I'm afraid of Judy dying, though. :( Will we get to see Lisa's baby? Is there a unibrow involved? ;)

It is very sweet of Holly and Ethan to allow Judy and Ian to live with them.  :)
I can't wait to see Lisa's baby! I want to know if he/she has a unibrow.  ;)

(A/N: Thanks so much! I didn't originally plan to have Judy and Ian move in, but I had Ethan socializing with his mother and the option popped up on the interactions menu, and well...I thought why not?)

Chapter 22 – Burglars, Best Friends, and a Baby

The whole house has been abuzz with excitement with the impending new arrival. Darlene is practically glowing; she somehow managed to avoid morning sickness for the most part, but has been dealing with a more or less constant backache since month four. Fortunately the day spa runs occasional discounts, and Malcolm hasn't seemed to mind taking care of the rest.

He has been pretty much walking on air for the past seven months. The word excited doesn't even begin to describe it.

It hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows, however. A few months ago we were all awakened by the piercing wail of the burglar alarm just after midnight. My first instinct was to run to Elysia's room and make sure that my daughter was protected, but then my police training kicked in and prompted me to get my rear end downstairs and arrest whomever had the audacity (and foolishness) to invade the home of a forensic specialist.

When I got to the foyer a familiar face met my eyes.

“Twyla Summers, hands in the air!”

“Lieutenant Bunch, I...uh...oh crud...”

At that moment Officer Hunter burst in the door. He took one look at Twyla and shook his head. “You again?”

“You'd think she would learn her lesson after the first eight arrests,” I replied. “She's all yours, Eugene.”

Twyla put up a fight, but in the end she was in handcuffs. “Twyla Dawn Summers, you are under arrest for breaking and entering and attempted burglary. You have the right to remain silent--”

“Yeah, yeah, I know the drill. Just get this over with.”

It was all over less than an hour later and all of us headed back to bed. I had thought that Elysia would be somewhat traumatized, but she was surprisingly unfazed by the whole thing. “Why should I be scared when my mommy is a police officer?” That's my girl. :)

She's been quite busy over these past couple of months. Back when we were renovating the house Ethan opted to have a playground built in the backyard. Now that school is out for the summer Elysia has been finally able to take full advantage of it.

And so have her two best friends, Dallas Steel and Judd Sekemoto.

I swear that the three of them are attached at the hip, because wherever one is, chances are the other two are there as well. This summer that has mostly been our house, because according to Dallas “You guys have the COOL back yard.” Both of them are pretty nice kids. Dallas is the wilder and more outgoing of the two boys, where Judd is more quiet and reserved—unless he's excited about something. Or playing pretend at the kitchen table with Elysia.

“I'm the great King of Sunset Valley!”

“I'm the great Queen! Bow to our rule and let us have ice cream sundaes!”

Who can possibly argue with something so adorable?

I will say though, I think those three are going to be a serious handful when they hit their teenage years. Oh gosh...I just realized that's only four years away. How has time flown by so quickly?

Before we knew it Darlene's due date was here, and unlike Elysia who chose to wait a week this little one was right on time. At three o' clock in the morning.

Of course, the early hour didn't stop Judy from calling everyone else in the family with the news.

“Arlo! Your sister is in labor!”

“Mooom? It's three a.m. I just got off of a late shift. Go 'way.”

Undeterred she called Lisa, who was surprisingly already awake. “Really? We'll meet you guys at the hospital!”

She tried getting Ian up for the event, but that didn't work out so well.

“Ian! Get up, we're going to the hospital.”

“Mmmwwrfff...the zebra's been kidnapped,” he mumbled.

“Never mind. Just sleep.”

Ian rolled over. “Potato.”

(Judy didn't even try to figure that one out.)

Elly was wide awake and practically begging to come along. I told her that we would have to wait outside, but she didn't care. She just wanted to be there when her baby cousin was born.

Malcolm rushed Darlene to the hospital and the rest of us followed a little while later. As promised, Lisa was there to meet us with her own little one in tow. Roger is adorable, and it's sad to know that he will never know his father. (Iqbal passed away only a year after he was born.) I have to give Lisa credit though; she has done amazingly well raising her son and has still somehow managed to hold down a successful career in the military.

We made our way into the waiting room and were joined a short time later by Nancy and Geoffrey. (Fortunately Malcolm had the presence of mind to call his parents on the way to the hospital.) The eight of us sat there making small talk, caught somewhere in between exhaustion and eager anticipation as we waited for news. About an hour into it Geoffrey stood up and walked out of the room, returning a few minutes later with a pot of fresh coffee and a stack of styrofoam cups.

“You raided the nurse's station, didn't you?” Ethan asked. Geoffrey only smiled and started pouring.

Never have I been so grateful for a simple cup of hot coffee.

Another hour passed and still no news. Ethan made another coffee run, this time absconding with a few donuts from the break room for us to munch on. Fortunately we didn't have to wait too much longer; half an hour later Malcolm appeared at the door in full scrubs, a wistful grin on his face.

“We have a girl.”

And so, at 5:52 this morning Iris Elizabeth Landgraab made her debut—a healthy, happy, and very much loved baby. Darlene is resting comfortably at home and neither she nor Malcolm could possibly be happier.

Happy birthday, sweet Iris.

(Another A/N: Nope, no unibrow for little Roger. :P)

Welcome Iris Elizabeth! I'm glad Lisa's doing well, although I'm sorry Roger won't get to know his father. Elysia is adorable! Hmm, I wonder what she'll be like as a teen, and her two little friends as well.

I welcome Iris Elizabeth Langraab! I can't wait to see her when she grows up. It's a shame that Iqbal passed away when Roger was only one, but I congratulate Lisa on being able to raise Roger into a healthy toddler.  :D Naaaw, I wanted the unibrow, hehe! At least Roger won't be bullied because of it.

Out of all of the teens I've played Elly is probably the most fun yet. I have this one upcoming chapter yet before her teen birthday (that I'm having one heck of a struggle with). Her two friends play veeery heavily into the upcoming storyline though, one in particular...

I can't believe this has hit over 3100 views. I am simply floored...and quite flattered. Thank you all so very much for reading! I'm hoping to have the next chapter out sometime later today or very early tomorrow, that is if I can get past a small writer's block and get the last couple of screencaps that I need. :)

Two Worlds, One Heart - Chapter 23
« Reply #117 on: September 14, 2012, 06:39:55 AM »
Chapter 23 – Another Goodbye

Sigh.

Everyone knew that it was coming, but nobody thought that it would be quite so soon.

We lost Mom last week.

She never quite recovered from Dad's passing and her health had been on a steady downward slide ever since. I will say, though, that her final few months were filled with pleasant memories. Most of her waking hours were spent doting upon her grandchildren; she just adored Iris and Elly, and they adored her right back.

Mom had a particular fondness for Iris. With the exception of her bright blue eyes and lack of freckles she is the spitting image of Darlene when she was an infant. For comparison Mom dug out an old family photograph back from when my kid sister was barely a year old. (From left to right: Lisa age 4 ½, Darlene age 1, Mom, me at age 9, Arlo 3 ½, and Dad.)

And here is a photo of Iris on her first birthday just over a week ago.

The resemblance is just uncanny.

That photograph, by the way, sparked some rather amusing conversation that afternoon, mostly involving Mom telling embarrassing stories about me and Darlene as kids. You'd think at thirty-five I wouldn't be quite so embarrassed about the goofy stunts I pulled as a child, but when your own wife and daughter start laughing at you...all bets are off.

It felt good to reminisce. We've had a lot of good times as a family over the years.

A few days later my baby brother had his eighteenth birthday. He was more than thrilled to be finally leaving high school behind, and that very afternoon he went out and applied for a job at the local diner.

Little did any of us realize that our celebration would be cut short by tragedy. Later that night, my mother's final date with destiny arrived.

“Mama, no!” Ian cried out. A thick black mist began to form in the corner of the room as the terrifying form of Death itself faded into view.

“Ahh, Judy. Right on schedule,” the apparition spoke in a disturbingly nonchalant tone. “There's someone on the other side who has been waiting for you to arrive. He's about to drive everyone else crazy with his ridiculous jokes.”

“Jack...”

“Indeed. Have you any final words to say to your loved ones?”

She looked at us and smiled. “I won't tell you not to grieve, I know that would be impossible. Just know that I love you and am so very proud of each and every one of you. Someday we will all meet again...but until then, live good lives and take care of each other.” She looked back at Death and nodded. “I'm ready.”

And with those words, Judith Leah Bunch breathed her last. She met her end with dignity and a smile on her face, surrounded by those whom she loved.

We laid her to rest a few days later in her rightful place next to Dad, near the plum trees on the western edge of the memorial gardens overlooking the town. All of the Bunch children and grandchildren were there, as were her dearest friends.

Elysia was inconsolable. I think that was the hardest part about the whole thing. My baby girl was hurting and there was nothing that I could do to shield her from the pain.

Late that night as I was laying awake in bed, I could have sworn that I heard the sound of my parents' laughter off in the distance. They were together again and would be for eternity, and there was something comforting about that. As much as it hurt that she would no longer be with us, knowing that she was happy again made it a little bit more bearable.

I felt Holly's arms wrap around my shoulders and a light kiss on the back of my neck. Everything was going to be all right in time. Life as always will continue, but sometimes...I just wish the clock didn't tick so fast.

(A/N: I really wish that sims would stop dying on their loved ones' birthdays...first Jack on Elly's child birthday, now Judy on Ian's YA birthday. :( I didn't use this in the story, but I had Mortimer and Bella in the household for a while, and guess who decided to die on Morty's YA birthday? His mother. This seems to be a going theme in this game...

I will say though that I'm about halfway through Elly's teen years and there haven't been any more important deaths...so at least the next few chapters will be more light-hearted. :) Thanks again for reading!)

Oh no! :'( RIP Judy. I'm glad she was happy in her final months, though. I've always had a soft spot for Judy Bunch, but you just made me love her even more. I'm kind of angry at you. (Just kidding, but way to break my heart!)

RIP Judy. That was so sweet what she said. Poor Elly, she was so close to Judy! I'd give her a hug if I could.
