The Consignment Shop in General and its Relation to Experience

Has anyone ever actually consigned any relics? I can't in my game either! 

In consingment shop - no, but at relic store yes. Gems, ores, cut gems, relics. To do that in home town, simply add relic register on community lot (easiest way is at consingmet shop, so you get all the shopping done there). Same day if not iimmediately game will hire some of the townies and you will be able to buy gems and ores findable in all WA locations (Quartz, Geode, gold, etc) but you can sell relics and cut gems without any profit (it costs the same amount of cash as if you sell them from inventory, and they don't appear in buy list at all after you sell them) and you get money immediately. Relic register is in built mode/community lots/misc.

I love the consignemnt store, it's one of my favorite things about ambitions. Are the things you can buy there (i.e. Paintings, furniture) cheaper than what the would cost in buy mode?

Cameras are definitely cheaper. I've not seen any furniture, and the paintings seem to be the ones you can make yourself rather than the ones in buy mode. You can sometimes get a miner or a time machine, which is nice if you're not an inventor.

The prices vary quite a bit - sometimes you can get an excellent deal - like SimLife Goggles for around 5k (in buy mode I think they are around 9k).  You really have to know what things are worth to determine if you are getting a good deal or not.  Generally crafted items such as inventions, paintings, and nectar are good investments.  Even if you pay more than they are worth you can turn around and consign them and when they sell you will almost always make a very nice profit.

My general rules for buying in the consignment shop are:
- always buy rare gems and metals no matter the price
- buy gnomes when they are available no matter the price
- buy the photography and martial arts books if they cost less than $50
- buy the Hikon camera as soon as it is available
- watch prices on luxury items like SimLife Goggles and trampolines and buy when they are available at around 50-75% of the price in buy mode - if you don't need these items you can always sell them in buy mode and make a decent profit if you buy them really cheap
- watch the prices on skill books and buy when they are cheaper than the bookstore
- buy crafted items (inventions, paintings, and nectar) whenever I have extra money and reconsign them for profit

That's just what works for me.  I'd love to hear how other people work the consignment shop.

I could have written the exact same list as you Katluvr 

I target the expensive crafted items mostly to raise the reputation at the shop.
With celebrities (3 stars or more) you can also get reductions. I can sometimes buy the goggles for 2-3k, really nice.
And I tend to buy all the novels. It doesn't serve any purpose, but it's just like in real life: I like my Sims homes packed with books!

One thing I love is buying paintings and hanging onto them. Don't consign them immediately. If aging is on, wait for the artist to die of old age. The painting skyrockets in value, than consign and you can make some serious profit!!

For about two weeks, there was no clerk at the consignment shop in the middle of the day. I searched "consignment shop" on the Forum, and found a suggestion that you reset the sim who is supposed to be the clerk. I had no idea who the clerk was, but I tried resetsim *, and that worked.

I go to the consignment shop to sell my sims' paintings, and to snag a camera (or two).
Other then that, I just ignore the consignment shop.

I've only had the consignment store for a week, so please forgive me if I ask questions that are old news to most of you. 

I've skimmed this thread and done other research but am not sure where things stand now.  For example, has there been an official fix for "things stuck in personal inventory" (and rendered useless) after cancelling a consignment (I've had it happen)?  Has anyone else had blank boxes show up in family inventory when cancelling a consignment?  Has there been any official fix or word on any of the consignment issues?

Another question:  Is there a way to bulk cancel?  I tried the 99 fruits trick a few times but generally only maybe 30 were sold and I was left having to cancel 60-some fruits one at a time.  Because of the horror stories I've been reading here (and a unique consignment glitch I encountered but haven't seen written up anywhere), I'm trying to visit every day (what a pain).   Now I only consign 6-10 items per day so it's taking a long time to get to 150.  I'm hoping I'm just overlooking a minor keystroke or combination here.

At this point, they (EA) would probably be better off just scrapping the entire store (Going Out of Business Sale, everything 90% off!) and re-designing it from the ground up .

I originally thought that the store was great, I was having no problems and was making tons of money. Then I started my dynasty. I lost about 2-4000 because things wouldn't sell but then they wouldn't be at the store either. I ended up canceling all the consignment I could and I'm now just selling everything at the supermarket. Its a shame too because I had really liked the store.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to mass un-consign. Wish there was. And the only inventory problems I've had is when I un-consign sculptures, they go into my sims inventory instead of back into the family inventory and the only way to get rid of it that I've found is re-consign it. The other one was right after Generations, my Dynasty girl had everything in her inventory frozen and shaking. The way I got rid of that was to travel, but with traveling bugs I was really taking a chance. Thankfully that one paid off for me.

Interesting.  The two biggest issues I've had also involved sculpture.  In the first case, I started a whole new game with a Sim I've used before.  Sim B had the exact same name as the old Sim A.   As soon as I signed in, the new Sim (Sim B) got credit for sales of sculpture created by the previous Sim (Sim A) in a totally different game!  Sim B went to the store and was given the option to cancel sales she'd never consigned.  Curious, she did so and ended up with blank boxes in her family inventory.  Couldn't move them, couldn't sell them, couldn't even Object... Delete them via cheats.

The other instance is the one so many have described: my Sim cancelled a lot of sculpture sales, worth thousands, and they ended up as dead weight in her personal inventory.

Losing so much money is quite irritating.

I'm beginning to think they should stop calling it a consignment store.  They should add some flashy lights and call it a casino, because it's a gamble every time you go in .

Its a building that comes with ambitions. You sell your stuff there and can usually sell for a lot higher price than you would normally. It has a lot of bugs though.
