Chapter 16: Holly Days
« Reply #45 on: December 31, 2012, 02:11:32 PM »
(aka hazelnut plays with her new toys)

As soon as Holly moved into her new house, the weather started to change and she decided to change her life along with the season.  The first step was to quit her job – she could make far more money by playing for tips, anyway.  The next was to invite Jack Hammer over.  She’d fallen for him the first time she saw him – can’t imagine why :)

First she asked him to move in…

...and then she invited him out on a date.  By the end of the evening, they were engaged.

The next night, Holly wandered outside to investigate some strange lights in the sky…

…and got herself abducted by aliens.

I didn’t see her return because I was expecting the whole thing to take longer – but she seemed none the worse for her adventure.  Which was just as well, really, given that she was getting married the next day.

You didn’t expect Hol to have an ordinary wedding, did you?

At least they went indoors for the cake.

Jack seemed astonished to see a guest eating invisible cake, which would be a perfectly reasonable reaction if he hadn’t just enjoyed a slice himself.

At last, the bride and groom were left alone together …

…although some of the guests carried on playing in the snow for hours.  By morning, the house was surrounded by snowmen and igloos in various stages of construction.

For some reason, pregnancy books don’t generally recommend making snow angels as an activity for mothers-to be, especially without a coat (and face-down in this particular case – I wish I’d got a screenshot).  At least she wasn’t wearing a swimsuit.

Eventually, Jack persuaded her to go inside and dance instead.

Holly went into labour while competing in the Local Musician Showdown at the theatre, because I’d lost track of the days.  (Unless it was an alien baby – but I thought that was only for male Sims?)

She hurried straight home to carry on pulling faces in comfort.

Another thing I’d forgotten to do was to feed her apples.  Jack wanted a son and I’d been intending to have a male heir as the only child this time but I was far too busy playing with the new stuff to remember to send her to the supermarket.  Fortunately, she had a boy anyway.

Welcome, Ash Wood.  He is brave and loves the cold (just as well, given that he’s going to grow up in a wintry world)

Ash is another name reused from the immortal dynasty.  The original Ash was Holly’s father, rather than her son.  He was a Monster Maker and self-employed inventor who supermaxed handiness.  I have a feeling he also supermaxed inventing later (I certainly remember him blowing himself up rather a lot and being grateful he had a deathflower by then).   His was the generation where I nearly lost it.  I married him off to a schoolfriend, Maebe, who was one of my favourite Sims in the whole family, only to find that she’d aged oddly and was now in mid-adulthood while Ash still had a week left as a young adult.  Since his dad was still alive at this point, the house was full and they couldn’t have Holly.  When Josiah finally died, I rushed them straight into Trying for Baby, forgetting that Ash hadn’t finished his lifetime wish and SimBots also need spaces in the household.  Since Maebe lived quite a long time, Ash didn’t get his Ambrosia until he was in his late eighties.

What a wonderful wedding! I just love all Holy's outfits!  :)

Are the wedding seats the ones from Ambitions? They're categorized as armchairs so that's probably why the guests didn't sit down. ( or did they? )

Thanks.  Not exactly a normal wedding but fun at this time of year (especially with Seasons newly installed).  I'll miss Holly when she goes - I'm enjoying the mad outfits.  I suspect the insanity may recur in later generations :)

Sequoia's wedding chairs were outdoor benches, which may be why they didn't work.  Holly's wedding chairs are from the store (the Romanza wedding stuff, I think, although I use them a lot as dining chairs in modern houses.  I can't remember whether they're classified under dining chairs or miscellaneous.)  Her guests did sit down, although none of those screenshots made it into the story.

Oh, I see. I thought they were from Ambitions just for a moment. I've made the mistake of placing armchairs instead of chairs before, and just wanted to be sure that wasn't the problem.  :)

Insane sims are awesome, :)

Where did you get Holly's Christmassy wedding dress from?

Chapter 17: Toddler in the Snow

(Yes, finally another update – with unashamed toddler spam.)

The skill for this house is handiness (so how could I resist a spouse called Jack Hammer?)  Holly reached level ten during her pregnancy, mostly from reading books.  When he joined the household, Jack wanted to be an architect for some obscure reason but had a change of lifetime wish as soon as he had the points.  He’s now going for Jack of All Trades, which I’d originally intended to do later with a combination of professions and self-employment.  Given his name and his commitment issues, it seemed an ideal match.

He started off by joining the fire service (wearing all of his uniform this time :) ) and reading handiness books in the library whenever he wasn’t at the station.

Holly, meanwhile, looked after her son, did the housework in her formal outfit…

… and enjoyed the snow.

Well, obviously it’s sensible to wear your outdoor clothes if you’re out in the snow, even if you are sitting in a hot tub.  It’s good to see that motherhood hasn’t changed her essential Holly-ness:

The snow was really quite deep in the drifts:

(Well, OK, I eventually had to reset that poor wild horse.)

Soon it was time for Ash to age up.

He was an adorable toddler.

His parents shared the skill-teaching duties:

And he was soon free to play.

Holly took him to the Winter Festival...

...and left him to play while she tried to learn snowboarding.  He was quite happy sitting there and eating the snow…

…and quite a lot of townies picked him up for a cuddle.

Jack reached level five of the firefighter career and swapped to music.  Holly gave him her old acoustic guitar and they spent hours standing out in the snow together, playing.

The day before Ash’s child birthday, Holly finally achieved her true destiny and became a mad old lady.  She and Ash spent his last day of toddlerhood playing together.

The next day, they all slept late, fitting in with Jack’s hours as a musician.  As soon as everyone was up, Holly took Ash to the cake.

Unfortunately, it caught fire.  Jack did his best “Look, I’m a real firefighter now! (At least, I was)” look and fought the flames (not very impressively, I have to say).

Eventually, the fire went out, with only one countertop and the cake ruined.

The Twinbrook Fire Brigade eventually put in an appearance and administered mixed tellings-off and congratulations.  Ash aged up on his own that evening and went straight to the blocks table to start skilling.

Ash is adorable. Of course, fantastic genes. I need to marry one of my Sims off to a Party Dancer! I admire your description of the townie firefighters. Succint, accurate, and comical.

Chapter 18: The Long Winter

Brave kids are a pain with Supernatural installed.  Ash spent about 60% of his childhood checking for monsters – and mostly found them.

It didn’t help that every day was a snow day.  On his first Monday, I sent him to school anyway.  The poor kid went on his bike because I’d forgotten they had a teleporter.  After that one day of school and homework, he stayed at home but rapidly achieved an ‘A’ anyway.  When he wasn’t checking for monsters, he spent his time playing in the snow and generally enjoying himself.

Jack is still ploughing through the Jack of All Trades wish.  He’s now on his fourth career, so should be able to finish it in time.  When he’s not working, he and Holly spend as much time as possible being romantic together.

I’m not sure whether it’s random variation but the Pizza Appreciator trait seems to be getting stronger as the game goes on: Ash certainly gets a bigger positive moodlet from pizza than Holly does.

Another Friday; another birthday.

Ash aged up and became handy (naturally, in this house).  Holly spent the night teaching him to drive.  I wish I’d had a motive mobile when I was learning. By morning, Ash had his licence and was refreshed and ready to start repairing the broken plumbing that had been accumulating for three generations.

The rate of skill gain on the current patch is just crazy.  Ash had reached level ten of handiness before end of the weekend.  (And over in the Immortal Dynasty, Sky celebrated being allowed into the kitchen for the first time by making herself a batch of waffles and got to level three of cooking.)

Monday was another snow day, so Ash repaired their broken appliances as well.  He was still only halfway through the Electrician challenge but now he’d have to wait for something else to break.  Meanwhile, he started on his upgrades.

Does anyone else find this particular upgrade disconcerting?  I keep picturing kids trying it out in real life (imagine whiny voice): “But Mummyyyyyyyyy, you said you wished you were better at cooking.  I was only trying to help…”

I’ve left Holly on free will since she aged up to elder.  I didn’t know that Sims could harass snowmen.  That one at the front seems quite deflated by it.

She’s still trying (and failing) to master snowboarding:

After the first day, high school was in session as normal and, during his first week there, Ash became my first Twinbrook teenager in a long time to go to a prom.

His parents made the most of the offspring-free hours, trying out their new smustlin’ ability…

…and getting romantic, as usual.

The long winter was finally drawing to an end and Holly threw a gift-giving party, inviting the former daycare kids (now grown up and, in two cases, supernaturals) and all of the surving family members – Rowan had died of old age a couple of days before.  Bambi spent most of the party mourning him and the rest of the time shrinking…

…although Laurel and Sequoia seemed to enjoy themselves:

Ash looks as handsome as ever. That glitch annoys me. It has the potential to ruin this project quite easily. I managed to keep it out of my Immortal Dynasty completely by putting them all in a bad mood before saving, which is time consuming and frustrating but effective. I don't know if it works if you already have the glitch though.

It could really be a pain with any challenge that limits skill gain.  (I may possibly have two other games I'm itching to start...)  I'm more worried about the Rainbows than the Woods, really.  Jean maxed fishing scarily quickly and with another two-and-a-half generations to pick up each other's skills...  With this lot, another town move is coming up fairly soon and I'm hoping everything will reset at that point.  I hadn't thought of deliberately making Sims miserable before a save.  It goes against the grain but does sound like a good strategy.

Since the skill gain is linked to saving and restarting in a good mood, that's the only way I know to make it work. It goes against the grain for me as well, and the Sims resist it (you'll have to lock them away from showers, toilets, bed, rockers, and anything else that will fulfil their needs) but with a Moodlet Manager it's easier. It takes time and you have to plan ahead, especially for those younger than teens, but it kept my dynasty free of the bug.

Edit: The elixirs help as well. Origin of the Tragic Clown is particularly helpful as it makes everyone above Toddler miserable as well. I lock them all in a central hallway with nothing in it and zap them with Moodlet Managers and Flask of Angry Bees, Melancholy Serum, etc.

Thanks.  I'll try it.  (Still haven't played with alchemy at all.)
