I'll test the french one with a couple I had to MANIPULATE to fall in love. They had no social for positive sim interaction, and one was even a Loner.  :-[ I'll report my test back.

Edit: Okay, it works very well. After reducing them to 0 relationship, and setting it to static, I tried romancing from both sides.

Toby:               Tolea:
Loner                Brave
Virtuoso            Handy
Neat                 Hot-Headed
Green Thumb     Athletic
Bookworm         Loves the Outdoors

Their first interaction was positive, but then...It went south when Toby repeated a action. Then, they began getting negatives, so I sent Tolea and Toby twoards the insence, on a desk, and burned it. When it kicked in, I began doing every romantic interaction. They had the smallest amount for romantic interest I'd ever seen, at about a 15. They became BF and GF at the smallest possible amount. It's pretty safe to say this incense should be placed where you're wooing a NPC Sim.

@TollingBells. You've convinces me with your test.
But to be sure, have you tried the same amount of testing without the incense while getting a negative result, but after restarting your savegame without saving you get only positive moodlets while the incense is burning?

I have not done any actual testing, beyond casual observation.

I make sure to have Chinese incense in the kitchen, living room, study and the children's bedroom.  The French incense is placed in the adult's bedrooms only.  I also make sure I have the Egyptian incense near a desk and also in the same area that my Sim may do anything stressful.  I find that my simmies seem much happier that way.  :)

My sims walk from room, wafting the air with their hand and saying, "mmmm". Times 7 family members.  ;D

I wanted to put specifics for Incense on the guide, at least for the skill booster, so I'm bumping this ancient post. The item in question is bought in China at the General Store and is called the Honorary Incense Holder of Jun Pao.

In running the test, I did it with painting from 0 to level 1. This took 4.5 hours without incense burning, and 3.25 with. The boost to skill gains using incense is 25%, which can save you a lot of time. My times weren't perfectly accurate and the reading said 28%, but we'll assume it's a more common 25.

All I know is that when my sim was a writer, she had all 3 incense burning and music on. Her books were always hits or best sellers. Never a dud. So they must have put her in the right mood.

Great! I was always thinking it has to do something with the speed of learning.

Indeed. I've always placed all three the incenses into each room of my rich sims. Now I finally know why. :P

I've bought 2 at the consignment shop. You may not have to travel.

I regularly see them at the Consignment Shop but haven't bought them in recent games.  I found in my Dynasty attempts that the pregnant Sims can sometimes get negative moodlets from them.

And Joria... "double blind" ... as an ex-psychologist, I laughed so hard I had the entire household in my study wanting to know what was so funny.

For your information - a blind experiment is when some of the subjects under investigation don't know if they receive the treatment or the placebo.  A double blind is when the researcher doesn't know which subjects are in which group.   It's to avoid observation bias by the researcher and the subjects.  It's very hard to get approval for blind experiments.

This was so funny to me because none of my Sims have ever been aware of what I'm doing to them ... I blind-side them all the time.  Still laughing... not at you ... but at the image in my mind of me when I first started playing and my poor frustrated Sims.  I had no idea how to do stuff and experimented on them all the time.

Thanks I really needed the funny.  ;D
