He Just Doesn't Want to Die
« on: June 05, 2010, 10:22:09 AM »
I have a sim that just doesn't want to die. He did once, came back as a ghost and has now an eternity lifespan. The bar says 90 days, but the grim reaper doesn't come over.
I've brought the ghost back to life, tried to drown him, stopped feeding him, but nothing helps. The age bar is 90 and stays 90.
Even with testingcheatsenabled on and shift-clicking on the sim, I can't trigger his birthday. 'This sim won't get older' the games says.
Anyone have a tip for this? I've already reinstalled everything and defragmented my whole system.

Use testingcheats and drag his Hunger bar down to red, that makes my sims die instantly, not that I ever do that!  ;)

I moved this to Miscellaneous Help; it's really nothing about Ambitions. I hope you don't mind Leto. :)

I'll say that the sim has been glitched, either you can move him out or try samoht's idea.

What length lifespan are you using? With my Darkholme family I originally had lifespan set to 'Long' but as the family grew to maximum size I kinda wanted the space (my game started loading slower, and the original founders were Elders) so I switched the lifespan to normal.
The age bar for both went down (in other words, the Elders got younger) so they didn't actually die sooner. When I went to change the lifespan back to long (since I'd originally thought shortening the lifespan would encourage my Elder Sims to pass on) I found that they were STILL younger than they'd originally been.
So I may have converted the new third floor of the house (originally intended as a bedroom for the 3 toddlers and newborns when they aged to children) into a floor of death. I'd not added stairs up to the third floor so I added a bathroom (I'm not totally heartless, I wanted the Elder Sim's last days to be dignified) and teleported one of my Elders to the third floor and waited for them to starve.

So Leto, you could:

1. Try altering the lifespan of your Sims via the game options. Maybe your game won't magically make your Sims younger (they were the same age group, just less days)

2. Building a room with no door, teleporting your Sim inside and either dragging the hunger bar to red or just ignoring your Sim and hope for the best (in the oddest way a death means 'best')

3. If 'Trigger Age Transition' doesn't work, you could reset the Sim and then try to trigger it again

4. If none of those work, how would you feel about deleting your Sim? Shift click and 'delete'?

Hope any of that helps you out
Grr Argh!

Hi Sarah, thanks for all those wonderfull tips, that absolutely should work, normally. :(
Too bad this time is an exception on that rule, because the sim I was talking about really likes to stick to the title of this topic: 'He just doesn't want to die.' Can't remember I've put so many capitals in that title, but oh well.

Deleting the sim isn't a option to, because his avatar will simply stay in the three of sims listed when I am in live mode.

Dragging his hunger bar to zero I don't even need to try, because soaking in a swimming pool day and night doesn't help already. And with doing that, his hunger- and energy bar where already dangerously red.

Too bad all this doesn't work for me, because my family graveyard isn't going to be complete this way. Mostly I am more a player that likes the sims to die when they have fullfilled their lifetime wishes and at old age, but this one is really pushing it.

You brought the ghost back to life with Ambrosia? And this is the one that won't die? Has the Sim lived out his elderly years after being brought back to life? I'd never heard of a Sim who won't die like this. I'm wondering if you just need patience to wait for him to die again on his own.

Try making a fire for him to die in, make waffles in the cheap stove, in a small room. Cancel the cook interaction and when he is far enough away, block the oven with a chair, it should catch fire and etc.

I've indeed brought it back to life with Ambrosia, because I assumed that a ghost simply can't die, unless he is alive again. But when I did that, all I got was a ghost (or a sim that looks like one) that doesn't/can't float through walls anymore. The rest remains the same. He walks by the way, not even floating. So I thought he could die, and now die good, but triggering age wasn't available either. 'The sim can't get older' I've could read from the message that pops up.
He was indeed at his final age when he died. Although I think, because I have put some sims (including him) in another household for a change and didn't get back to them. I did once, and saw he was a ghost, on bright daylight! But I just thought that it was that little change that ghost don't get back to their graves when the sun comes up. Anyway, when I was about to play the family again I found out that he didn't want to die and the rest is history.
I was indeed waiting for it to, but every day all that the age-bar gives as information is that this sim is 90 days old (which is strange, because I work with long life), and the next day it is still 90. Therefore waiting is not really an option here I am afraid.

I can't offer much help but I would assuming that reseting him and then doing what Pam said and just letting him go about 'til he dies again would be best. :-/ I'm sorry but that's about as much as I can say.

That's really a bizarre situation. The ghost ate Ambrosia, but didn't return to flesh? Do you have a screenshot of this guy?

Maybe he should try eating ambrosia again... :/ It might help.

Of course I could make a screenshot, but I am not sure if that will help. It just look like a ghost, untill you see him walking.
Maybe I can better sent you a copy of this sim himself, on second thought. Will you apreciate that?

That is something that might work. Because the ghost was eating Ambrosia while in France.

Or wait: I've already tried that out, back home. Hmmm, I'm giving you guys a hard time in finding a solution too, aren't I?

Resetting him doesn't work either?

Hmm. This may be a long shot (or something you may have already tried) but since he can't act like a ghost - not being able to walk through walls - you could maybe move the family to a different lot, then trying the various options to get rid of him all over again? Maybe on a different lot he'd regain his 'ghostlieness' so you could get him to return to the netherworld?
I don't really want to suggest splitting your household to kick him out, because that's not going to help you with your family graveyard :/

That's a good thing indeed. After I have saved my family as a file on it's own and then start a new neighbourhood where they could live in again I finally had the problem I-can't-see-the-family tree solved. But even that didn't help to let him die again.
