I have heard it more since I have installed storyprogression and it has to do with showtime, because when I hear that music, I get notification that so and so, in another part of town, has just been promoted to whatever level of singing, magician or acrabat profession.  Of course, I heard these sounds before I installed story progression.  I still say, it has to do with a sim that your not controlling has gotten a promotion in one of the professions, but that is my opinion.

I don't have Story Progression so I don't know about that mod and if it causes the strange sounds every night, it's just that not everyone that gets these weird sounds have mods and so I reckon the idea of it being caused by mods has to be ruled out. :-\

I didn't say it was caused my a mod.  I had these sounds too, before I installed it, but with the mod, there is popup that tells you someone got a promotion, whenever you hear that music.  So without any mods and no way of knowing, maybe someone did get a promotion, but there is no way of knowing unless you go from house to house to see if someone is in profession. :)

Possibly it's the break-up tune, especially if it's a little mournful. Sims relationships deteriorate over time and re-adjust around midnight. You can test this by having one of your Sims go steady with someone and then break up. If you hear your 1 am melody, then that's what it is.

Oh, aright. Is it every night? I hear sounds for promotions and things but only when my sim gets them. I never knew SP allows you to hear tunes regarding other sims as well, that must get annoying. :P

Actually, it is just a theory, but what other kind of music could it be?  Yes, it is annoying.  I heard that music, one after the other the other day and sims  somewhere in town, altogether got 15 promotions, well different sims.  I also found that there was a simfest in town and one of the sims getting promotions was performing there, that was pretty ironic.

There seems to be several sound bugs going around. For me it started with Showtime.
There's a chime that plays when a Simfest starts and about half the time it just plays over and over until the Simfest ends. I just have to turn my speakers off when a Simfest is going on.
I've done a lot of searching online and haven't seen a solution for any of the sound problem yet.

I don't know that it has anything to do with story progression.  I hear the random sounds at random times, I have EA's story progression turned off, and I don't have Twallan's story progression either.  I do have Showtime installed.

Ok, so we've heard from people are hearing the sounds  who don't have mods installed, and who don't have any sort of story progression running.  Does anyone who hears the random sounds not have Showtime installed?  So far it seems to me that Showtime might be the common factor for this bug.

I've got Showtime and patched up to the latest patch 1.34 I think it is? I didn't start hearing the sounds/chimes or what-not till after Showtime was installed. So I'm starting to lean towards it being something within Showtime that's doing it. Now that I'm reading it doesn't really have anything to do with the mods.

Yea I'm pretty certain this is a Showtime issue. Really strange.

Yes. I heard the sound after installing Showtime, but before I installed any mods. It sounds like the tune playing when a "Simmershow" is about to start.

Well I have zero idea as to how it can be fixed! It isn't a game-breaker or anything, but it must be really annoying. I assume it'll be fixed in a patch - There should be one coming soon to coincide with the Diesel Stuff Pack. Fingers crossed. :)

It's definietly a Showtime issue in my opinion. The sound system is totally bonked with these little chimes when someone  (a singer, acrobat, etc.) gets promotion. If your singer is doing a gig at the time, his/her singing goes off until the chime stops.

I hope they fix this.

I have the formerly mentioned Story Progression mod BUT do not have Showtime.
It’s apparent for me that the sounds are caused by that mod due to the fact that before I installed it (while on patch 1.34 I may add) and when I have it disabled those promotion/skill-gain SFX don’t play. (Except of course when those promotions/skill-gains are achieved my my active household.)

“You ought to upgrade to Windows 7!”, they said. “It’ll help your games run so much better!”, they said. If I see them again, then they had better know how to stabilize an on-the-fritz copy of The Sims 3 that was working just fine on Windows XP.
