Since playing Pets, I have yet to come across a unicorn in AP and wondered what else there is to find one?

Since playing Pets, I have yet to come across a unicorn in AP and wondered what else there is to find one?

There is something like a 40% chance of finding a Unicorn per night after 8pm. I've only seen one in AP but I've seen one practically every night in HS so it's just completely random. Every night at 8pm go into Map View and on triple speed wait for a rainbow like cloud to appear over one of the Fishing Spots - if it doesn't appear there won't be a Unicorn. They always spawn at a Fishing Spot but once spawned can travel around the World.

I've noticed in my games, that they show up more if you have already befriended other animals.

I agree with the fishing spots, they do spawn there.  I've found in my hoods that once I start to see wild horses in the hood, a few nights after seeing the wild horses, a unicorn will show up.  Around midnight, just use the magnifying glass while on a lot and look around the town and you'll see a huge bright light like this:
