Legacy (or other challenges) How to keep on going?
« on: June 22, 2012, 10:18:12 AM »
So... Ever since Sims 1, I have wanted to do Legacies. I haven't tried it so much yet. The problem is: I only play to the fourth generation -if I make it that far. I get to bored with the family, and start a new instead. I have tried to take pictures, not taking pictures. I have tried to take notes about what happens, I have tried not to take notes. I get confused sometimes, when the game takes over my mind I guess :-D. It's just hard for me to stay focused. I have been thinking about doing a video Let's Play Legacy style.
But. How to stay focused on the challenges? How to keep on remembering to put the pictures in the correct folder, so its easy to find again?
I'd love to play Legacies, for the fun (and the challenge;-)) and Id love to see my sims actually have great grandparents.

I have the same problem. I'm a chronic restarter. Once the family has enough money they don't need to worry about much, I get bored and wander. I've tried doing a legacy with a friend, but Sims won't run on her computer. I'm just about to start another game now, actually.

I, too, am a chronic restarter. I have at least seven games going, but I tend to move on when the loading times get too long or the file gets too buggy.

This isn't a story and doesn't belong on the Stories board.  I'm moving it over to the General Discussion board.  You should get a better response there.

I restart a lot too, but maybe when you get a ton of money you could build an even fancier house?  That advice most likely isn't accurate though, I've tried over um, I can't remember how many legacy's I've restarted before the first generation came in!  Lol.

I think part of keeping going for me is knowing that I'm working on something which is why I like dynasties so much.   There are only 15 known dynasty completions with another one about to join it's ranks that I know of.   That means that there is a small community of people who have done this and I guess you could say I have the ambition to be among them one day.

That's one of the reasons I really want to a DecaDynasty is because no one has completed it yet but there are a lot of people well on their way to possibly being the first.

I agree that playing a structured Dynasty (either Immortal or Townie DecaDynasty) helps a great deal with continuing on through the generations.  There are specific rules to follow and specific things each generation has to accomplish.  As soon as one goal is met, another one takes its place.

Have you tried the Random Legacy Challenge?
http://randomlegacychallenge.blogspot.com/

You roll for everything so each generation has different goals which keeps things interesting.

I am probably one of the few people that play immortal dynasties for fun I love the fact that you have the founder in the house throughout eight generations I think that is why I have such trouble playing a decadynasty I tend to loose intrest in that file once my I have to move house. Ever since I started playing the Sims I have either played legacies or dynasties.
But despite enjoying playing dynasties I do get fed up every now and then especially when nothing is happening and for me that is the hardest part of the challange.
Try out new careers and Lifetime wishes to keep things interesting.

Good to know, I'm not the only "restarter":-D.
I have tried the Random Legacy, but I didn't get very far. I didn't like to play with the traits I rolled for :-(.
I would love to try out the Immortal legacy, but... that would be too big a challenge for me I guess.  To many skills to be max, which I have never accomplished. The other "problem" keeping me from trying is the fact that I never play with more than one sim. Only when my female sim there would be more than one sim in the household. And that child almost never reach YA. I keep on saying "This is the time!" and am really excited over it, trying to mix up the rules I like ( :-p), but I fail in getting very far every time. Maybe I should try again. The Immortal Legacy sounds like a lot of fun:-).
I just started a new game. It's not directly a Legacy, but I want it to go all the way to at least generation 5. The game is begun the same way as a Legacy, with very little money. I like the fact, that a sim start out poor, and works her way "up the ladder" (Yay for the Casino :-p).
Trying out new Lifetime Wishes doesn't help :-(. I've only completed one so far (Singer career).
Thank you every one for your answers:-)

Sorry to sound nitpicky, but it's The Immortal Dynasty.  Rules for legacies come from other places, but Dynasties come from us.  :)

It would be worth a try.  There's a link to a spreadsheet on the first page of the Immortal Dynasty thread with the rules.  It helps to keep everything straight as you play through the generations.  It might also help for you to see your progress in black and white to keep you motivated.

I set myself really ambitious near-impossible goals (*ahem* 30 generations ::)) and then, as I know I always get angry at myself if I don't finish what I set out to do, it serves as a sort of incentive to keep me going. Something else that pushes me along is that especially when my amount of play time is limited and I have school and stuff, I know that people can be skeptic of my ambition: Other's skepticism kind of serves as a pushing force as well. I like to do things people are rarely able to do. :P

I have yet to feel the "getting bored" symptoms with my legacy though, however I regret saying it's a different story with my dynasty. ::) It's the first time I've played a file without cheats apart from when I once took part in Metro's challenges except that was a short-term file. I think it's that lack of freedom that means I get far more entertained with the Dreamers. I tend to only play the dynasty when I'm out of screenshots for the next chapter - which I really need to stop doing. :-[ I'm sure things'll get more exciting once I get past the generation 1 hump, and it's that ending and knowing how much I want it that keeps me going. ;)

Ups, sorry, didn't know that. I meant Dynasty, of course ;-). And to learn some more: Nitpicky?

Thanks :-). I'll use that :-). Seeing progress in black and white could help :-).
Fez-> So for you, as long as you get over the 1 generation, the "worst thing" is over? That could help me knowing that

I actually find the first generation the most fun when it comes to an immortal dynasty because so much is going on,it can get frustrating in later generations when you are trying to find things for your elders(immortals)to do. Right now I have six out of eight Sims all elder and that is really boring for me.

I'm only speaking as someone who is trying the dynasty for the very first time, i.e: I don't know what it's like later on, but it kinda seems like the worst of it is that first generation - less time to do all the requirements etc. I've heard from most people that it's the first that's the worst but I guess it's different for everyone, as Rachel's just shown. I'll probably find that bit annoying as well, but I just think it'll be easier on me once gen 1 gets to immortality. Another thing that can really get on top of things is if you're doing a story along with the dynasty - I can play my legacy for one hour and get 20/30 screenshots.. I can play my dynasty for one hour and only get one or two. It is so hard to fit a storyline round something with so many restrictions! :P I think that's also why I kind of steer away from playing sometimes, but I do suspect that after gen 1 is over or at least until gen 2 is a YA, storylines will kick in and I'll get screenshotting more. :) It's the waiting till that moment that is hard for me!
