Perhaps it might be an idea to edit the first post with a list of themes that have been used that way people can see at a glance what themes have been used and do not have to search through the thread.

A theme I've used since Sims 1 in my casual games is the Greene family. Parents are Kelly and Hunter, with children all named different shades of green. The most common ones I can remember using are Olive/Oliver, Ivy, Forrest, and Holly. Not terribly creative, but it amused me at the time, and then it became habit. :)

I've using the precious gems theme (greenwood family). I also have a berry family (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, mulberry, cranberry....) and an adjective family (shy, bold, gentle, loyal, happy...). I have one that's supposed to be unusual names (Laurel, Evann). And the caliente tradition of "ina"s (Dina, Nina, Rina, Mina, Cina, Lina...). Oh, and planets! (mercury, venus...) I intend to skip uranus though lol...

I'm starting to name Sims after their traits. For example, an evil genius named Dr. Evulz (also my username's namesake) and a good Sim named Lou Goode, etc.

The family I'm current playing I'm using names of Greek Gods. Zeus, Hera, Apollo and Aphrodite so far.

I've played with blue and green Sims a lot lately, with Showtime, and I've come up with quite a few last names, based on the color of their skin, like Rain, Frost, Winter, Storm, Snow, Springs, Moss, Grass, and Earth.

I'm about to get an acrobat named Leia Springs, and a roommate named Purple Rain.

I'm not doing a formal dynasty or legacy, but I have my own going for some of sim families.  I love to read and my favorite genre right now is paranormal romance. I wrote down the names of my favorite characters and have been trying to match them up.  Trying also to keep the mated one together, but sometimes I like the name of one character and not his/her mates name, so there are some weird mixes and matches, if you knew who the characters were.   ;D

I had been thinking of how to keep it better straightened out, and decided to do one set author for each town.  Carpathians for Riverview, Breeds for AP and the Psy/Changlings for SV

A little hard to do right now, but when Supernatural comes out, I have some great ones to use.

I also name my sims after characters.  My favorite (abandoned) family were the Storybrooks.  Founders Lia and Mark, who were two of my own characters, gave birth to twins Katniss and Effie, and then triplets Primrose, Madge, and Johanna.  Y'know, because I'm totally not missing another female character in there...

Back on topic, I had ten generations of characters plotted out, one generation for each book.  I eventually got bored before Gen. 2 was even born, but I plan on doing something similar in the future, with less children.

I'm shocked with how consistent you guys get with naming themes. The most I ever got was "maybe half the kids had French-sounding names in one legacy," and a lot of sims named Phil running around in other towns.

With my more free-play adventures, I think I ran a general metal theme in one household. Gorod, Delain, Aghora, and Nergal were all enjoying themselves until their household got bugged.

Most of the time I just use names I like, but I've themed it up before. All the adoptive kids of one of my first Sim couple were all named after Greek playwrites/characters from Greek plays. The kids of one of my more recent family are all going to be named after places. So far I have Nebraska and Arcadia. I've also done the abcde thing with the first name-sounding thing that popped into my head, it being me I ended up with Sims named Barnacle and Carnie xD

I remember in Sims 1 using fruits but just because I loved the name Clementine (naturally... as you do) which I might rekindle.

I'm starting my family/dynasty (well it will be eventually :) ) based on the books of Roald Dahl; my favourite childhood author (and secretly still my all time favourite.) I'm starting with Esio Trot (I know not the character but I've ALWAYS wanted a character called Esio!)

I also wanted to base a family on Audrey Hepburn's movies and plays (typically I'm a fan.) But who knows? I'm quite keen on the Dahl Dynasty :)

I also LOVE Trips Sigur Ros idea (I love the band!) :) and Samoht's Character legacy... So many great ideas here!

Love. Life. Beautifully.

My immortal dynasty sort of had a theme, all the names I used were Welsh. Eleri was the founder, then Rhiannon, Anwen, Megan, Gwenlyn, Adlais, Seren and Taryn. The two spares were Rhoslyn and Rhea.

My decadynasty heirs don't have a theme. Most of them are just names that have popped into my head, although Sam (gen 1) and Ben (gen 4) plus a couple of others have had their names picked by picking up my phone and using the name of the last person to text me.

My legacy is themed by generation. So the gen 2 kids have been named with nature-y names, Skye, Rowan and Winter, as the dad is an outdoorsy green thumb. Gen 3 are going to be colours, as the mother is a painter.

I love some of the imaginative themes other people have come up with. And it's such a great idea for a thread!

If I'm doing something that I use more than 3 generations for I usually choose to name all of the sims names that come from a different country.  One of them was french names.  I'm currently trying to do a legacy that has a small animal theme(no, it's not a challenge that I am scoring points on or writing a story about)  So far I have a founder named bunny and a heir named squirrel.  I plan to name the next one chipmunk! ;D

I reckon for my DecaDynasty I will do a sort of couple-name theme. It's basically taking the Mother and Father's names and putting it together. E.g: Say I had Sarah and Freddie = Seddie or Farah? I just think mixing up names in that way makes for unique names you probably won't find anywhere else, it's really cool. :) I've seen it used a few times in other stories as well so it's a popular thing.
