Sims & Pets Name Themes
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:04:34 AM »
Hey, everyone, I hope this is in the right place. I thought I'd start a thread where we could share the themes with which we name some of our Sim characters. Do you use themes or if not, do any of your Sims' names have a special meaning?

For example, most of us know about Pam's colour theme in her Dreamweaver Dynasty and her sweets-themed DecaDynasty. I always thought that was a clever idea. The colours resulted in wonderfully creative names and outfits.

Lots of us name our Sims after precious stones - I'm naming my current Dynasty heirs after gems which you can get in the game. An alphabet or number theme is also very popular, particularly for Dynasties.

I had a family once which had two sisters named Coppelia and Aurora - which are the names of two leads in famous ballets. I also had a family with an alphabet theme. When Aurora grew up, she married a young man named Clyde - so I just went the whole hog and called their children Ben, Darcia, Eve and Freddie. ABCDEF. If I hadn't lost that game I probably would have gone even further down the alphabet!

In my Merryweather Dynasty, there are several themes going on. The Immortals themselves are named after precious stones: Emerald, Topaz, Quartz, Lazuli and Amethyst, and their rooms are decorated accordingly. The Imaginary Friends are named after chocolate bars (and I came up with that idea before Pam's DecaDynasty began, I swear I didn't copy her) - Galaxy and Bounty.
Lazuli's horses didn't have a theme to begin with, but now I've started to name them after worlds in the popular Myst games. Presently we have Myst, Spire, Haven and Edanna, and somewhere down the line I'm hoping to use the names J'nanin, Serenia, Tomahna and Narayan.
Even the collectable pets have a theme. There are four turtles, their terrariums are coloured red, orange, purple and blue and their names are Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo! There are also two lizards called Aladar and Neera.

So let's share our Sims' special name meanings and themes!

I remember trying out a decadynasty once with the Wan-Goddard family. I noticed that 'Wan' as a last name has a ton of pun opportunities that could describe the Sim. My Immortal Dynasty 1st attempt founder Drifter East's name actually came out because he was a self-sim and I picked "East" to contrast with a Kanye West sim I used for the Career Caps challenge. I might use the compass directions as inspiration for future names.

Other themes I've used in other games that I can remember include alliterative families (all members to have names beginning with the same letter - eg Jonas, Jason, Justin, Jacqueline etc.), shades of blue (Sky, Midnight, Electric, Deep) and even transition metal elements (Polonium, Nobellium, Neodymium) for a group of SimBots.

On another (though probably unintended) note, when I'm playing challenges I also do give my Sims themed names as it kind of helps me keep track of households of eight sims! I remember when trialling out the Baby Boomer challenges (before I got into participating in the Challenge Tournament) I'd usually name the babies alphabetically - Alicia, Bryan, Cornelia etc. (I could use numbers, but it'd be... a little awkward.) For challenges like the Trophy Room or the recent Wishmasters one, I'd usually name them after famous persons or objects in the fields they'd be going into (e.g. Leonardo for Descendant of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo for Renaissance Sim, Pavarotti for Vocal Legend) since I'm not too into naming Sims DoDV, Max3Skills or Singer10.

Interesting thread! My Immortal Dynasty Sims have Tolkien names: Túrin, Imrahil, Eldacar, Mandos, etc. My Life State file has Nightwish names: Amaranth for the immortal vampire, Tutankhamen for the mummy, etc. My DecaDynasty (which I'm waiting until after the Immortal Dynasty to begin) will have Constance Shelley as one of the founders and use names of famous authors and novel characters.

My dynasty founder's background is that he's a grim reaper.  So all of the immortals in the blood have the name A. Grim.  So far all their pets have had B names but that could change at any second.

My first Legacy had a theme of Characters - hence The Character Legacy.  ;)

1. Mickey Mouse - Mikey (Mickey) Character, It was a spelling mistake I never fixed.
2. Mickey Mouse Cont. - Daisy, Pluto and Daffy.
3. Flinstones - Fred and Barney.
4. Scooby Doo - Daphne, Velma, Fred, Shaggy and Scooby.
5. Tom and Jerry.
6. Winnie the Pooh and Wacky Races - Rabbit, Penelope, Dasterdly, Tigger and Mutley.
7. Toy Story - Jessie, Woody, Bezz (Female Buzz).
8. Bugs Bunny - Bugs and Elmer.
9. Sylvester and Tweety.
10. (Pink) Panther.

In my current Dynasty there is a theme for the Pet names to be various Animals. There are four Cats: Cat, Dog, Ferret and Rabbit. I like to say that it's because Tristan Jade wanted a Cat, a Dog, a Ferret and a Rabbit but well he got Cats instead. I'm thinking of a new Dynasty for when Supernatural comes out and I have a theme for that already - Woot for Elf Ears!  ;D

Ooh, good topic!  I really liked Pam's naming scheme, too.

In my decadynasty, my plan is to name all the heirs after herbs & their siblings after spices.  So right now I have my first generation Basil Wolff and his little brother Fennel.  There are a lot of cute girls' names I'm hoping to use, like Rosemary, Sage, Lavender, and Lemon Verbena.  Some spice names I like are Coriander, Turmeric, Ginger, Chili, and Paprika.

In other games, I've given sibling groups a bit of a theme, like Star Trek brothers Jean-Luc and Tiberius.

My Immortal Dynasty is entirely centred around my favourite band, Sigur Ros, and their music. Every immortal is named after a song, and their personality and storylines surrounding them goes with the song. I picked Hidden Sprigs to set it in because it reminds me of Iceland - Which is where Sigur Ros come from. Their last name is from the album title Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust, which means With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly. I thought the word Endless was a fitting last name for a dynasty.

I only have one pet - Von in my Dynasty. Von's another Sigur Ros name, it's just too short to be an immortal's name so I guess any short names may go to pets. Von means hope in Icelandic. :)

My first published dynasty was all herbs and Spices.   Sage(male) had sons Pepper & Dill.  Pepper's sons were Coriander and Mint.  Coriander was the father of Thyme.  I had names picked out for a long time.  I had someone join my current dynasty named Rosemary so I named her daughter Saffron.

Right now the dynasty I'm working on I'm using names from books and matching them with their trait/skill or career. For instance Eve is my founder and she's a gardener. My sculptor is Pygmalion and my super spy is naturally James Bond. All of the dogs in the family have been famous dogs: RinTinTin, Cujo, Lassie.

This topic is great.  Not only can we share the meanings behind our themes, but this can also be a place where we can check to see if a theme has already been done.  :)

Thank you! I was actually surprised no one else had come up with this idea already - I thought maybe they had and I just hadn't gone far enough back in the threads to find it. I'm really into name meanings, so I wanted to see other people's ideas.
