Ares Rocker: A Search for Beginnings
« on: June 09, 2012, 04:54:59 PM »
Chapter One: A Search for My Beginnings
My name is Ares Rocker; I am the first born son of Rex Rocker, my wonderful mother. I have moved out from under her loving wing and into a house of my own with my gorgeous girlfriend, Bella Bachelor. I have twin younger brothers, Asclepius and Apollo and a toddler sister, Themis. My journey starts when I have just joined the military career and I decide to search for my father, Stiles McGraw…

(That's me being brought home from the hospital by my mom, Rex Rocker.)

“I just don’t see the point, Ares.” My girlfriend Bella pleaded with me to not hunt down my father, “The man’s insane after all. Who knows why he demanded to see you so many years ago.”
“I have to, Bella; the man is my father after all. I don’t even know what he looks like.” I started to put my coat on, but Bella ripped it off.
“Please, don’t do this.”
“Babe, I’ll be back in a little while. Don’t worry.” I smiled at her, but I didn’t know what the future had in store and deep down, I feared what would become of this investigation.
I started at the theater. I asked the workers there if Stiles had come in that day, but no one had seen him all week. They didn’t even know where he lived because he had mysteriously returned from Bridgeport a few years ago. I then headed to the police department, but they insisted he hadn’t registered for a house anywhere in town, probably mooching off other people to let him stay with them. No one had any clue, the man had become a ghost, and no one knew where he lived. They only saw him every now and then. I knew it would be harder to find my father than I had anticipated. I returned home empty-handed and completely distraught. Bella stood over the stove preparing dinner, when she heard me come inside, she noticed the discouraged look on my face.
“I’m guessing you didn’t find anything, huh?” she continued stirring the food on the stove.
“No…” I plopped down onto the couch, “What’s for dinner?”
“Mac and cheese.” She said blowing away the steam, “Which is now ready.” She poured it into a big bowl. I grabbed a plate and we sat down at our undersized kitchen table.

“No one has seen the man in a week, and no one knows where he lives. It’s as if he’s a ghost. I figured he’s a mooching house-hopper.” I took a bite of the golden macaroni. Bella could cook anything; she could make dirt into a dazzling feast or mud into champagne.
“Maybe he moved out of town again.”
“Maybe…” I didn’t want to think about that possibility, but then again, he did move back from being fired. It could happen again, if he really did move out of town.
When we went to bed that night, I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking about my father being out there, I kept wondering where my legacy started and I had so many questions to ask him. What attracted him to Mom? Did he want to keep me? Had he been jealous or angry when Mom wanted nothing to do with him? What if he had become a murderer though? What if he really wanted to kill me? I sat up in bed and went to the bathroom. I didn’t need these types of thoughts running through my head. I turned the sink on and splashed my face into the running water. I sighed and then headed back into the bed and finally drifted off to sleep.
Dawn broke and the sunlight’s rays stretched through the window across the floor of the bedroom, this Saturday would surely bring something of this search. I showered and ate some breakfast, I peered into the bedroom afterwards, and Bella still slept in the bed. I quietly slipped out the door and headed to the theater once more. Still, the workers there had heard nothing of Stiles.
However, on the way home, I ran into Parker Langerak who had some very interesting information on the whereabouts of my father…

Chapter Two: The Inevitable Truth
“Hey Parker, fancy meeting you here, I guess.” I wished to say more, but I held my tongue.
“Yeah, I guess.” He rolled his eyes.
“Listen, I wanted to ask you something concerning my father.”
“Oh, Stiles, yeah, strange man, he’s always taking large amounts of money out from the bank and spending the nights with a variety of women. He really took your mother’s rejection hard. You could probably ask just about any woman in town where he’s at. Well, see you around.” Then he walked off as if leaving the scene of a crime. I wondered if he lied, but I didn’t care, the information he gave me, true or false, gave me hope to find my father.

I waited outside Hogan’s diner and asked Jamie Jolina who emerged from the restaurant if she had seen Stiles recently.
“Actually, I saw him just the other day, said he was staying with Emma Hatch for a couple of nights. Why do you ask?” she never knew my personal life, we were only acquaintances.
   “Well…he’s my father.”
“Oh my, I had no idea. I hope you can find him! Well…actually, now that I think of it, I did hear him say some things about a Rex Rocker? I don’t know who that could be, but he didn’t like this person, whoever they were.” Then she waved good-bye and left the parking lot.
I supposed he still had a grudge against my mother if he didn’t have anything nice to say about her. I didn’t know Emma Hatch though, but if Stiles had been sleeping with her, she must be fetching.

“Emma Hatch?! She’s a little big.” Bella told me when I came home that afternoon, “I wonder what he would want to sleep with her for…”
“I don’t know. Parker said he’s been taking large amounts of cash out of the bank too. None of this makes sense.”
“Maybe…” Bella sounded like she had an idea, “Maybe he’s a drug dealer!”
“Bella, what person in Sunset Valley sells drugs? That’s ridiculous; however, he could be a criminal mastermind.”
“That’s a very likely possibility, Ares. Now stop worrying about this and go to sleep, we both have to get up really early in the morning.” Like me, Bella dreamed of becoming an astronaut in the military. I considered her my soul mate and planned to marry her before too much longer.
We awoke around 6AM and groggily made breakfast, showered, used the bathroom and rode a taxi to work together. I had been training for the military since my teenage years, my athletic skill had almost reached its peak, although, my handiness could use some improvement. The work shift seemed to zip by and before I knew it, the clock already read 2PM.
Bella and I rode home together and discussed some marriage plans.
“So, if you had a choice between me proposing in a park or outside a theater, which would you choose?” I held her hand in the taxi as we rode home.
“Hmm, that’s a tough one. I guess at the park, but it would have to be at night.”
   “Formal or casual wear?”
   “Either.”
“Dinner and a stroll in the park, then propose; or movie and a stroll in the park, then propose?”
“Dinner and a stroll in the park.”
“Wedding day in the morning or in a week?”
   “Morning.”
“Alright then, I think it’s settled.” I kissed her on the cheek just as we arrived home.
“Why are you asking me all of these questions?”
“Well, I just want to know for future reference.” I hoped and prayed she wouldn’t share the same fate as Mom’s fiancé…
After we arrived home, I got a phone call from a very unexpected individual: Jamie.
“Ares? Hey, this is Jamie. I just wanted to let you know that Emma called me today and said that she and Stiles broke up. She told me that he said he was going to be moving back in with the woman he was dating before her…oh what did she say her name was? Hm, I can't remember the woman's name. Well, I would go ask Emma who he’s seeing. She works at the bistro in town. Just tell her I sent you. I hope you find your father soon. Have a good night.”
The search for Stiles turned into more of an investigation than an actual “here’s his phone number” situation. I hoped I could convince Emma to tell me who he had run off with…

Chapter Three: A Thief Among Us
I earned a promotion to the mess hall server at work. After my shift ended, I headed over the bistro and approached a man with an oddly shaved face and introduced himself as Jared Frio.
“I’m looking for Emma Hatch. My name’s Ares, tell her that Jamie sent me.”
   “Okay, one second.”
A moment later a fairly large woman with light brown hair cut in a boyish fashion and bright red lipstick appeared.
   “Can I help you?”
“Yes, uh, Jamie sent me to talk to you. I’m looking for Stiles--” she then angrily interrupted me.
“That lying jerk?! Why?” she furiously threw her arms in the air.
“Whoa, calm down…the guy is my father…”
“Your father?! He has a son?! That’s it, I don’t know who you are, but I demand you leave this restaurant immediately.”
“Wait! Please, I just need to know the name of the woman he’s staying with!” she began to push me out the doors.
   “Out!”
“Please, I need to talk with him.” I stopped and held my ground while she tried to push me out of the restaurant.
“No, get out before I call the cops.” Then she shoved me out of the bistro and slammed the doors in my face.
I had come to another dead end. If only Jamie could remember the name of Stiles' new girlfriend. I decided to call Mom; she would know what to do.

“Hey Mom…” I said over the cell after I had returned home.
“Hey baby! How are you? Are you enjoying the adult life?” I could hear Themis babbling in the background.
“Yes, I’m fine. Listen…what happened the last time you and Stiles spoke?”
“Ares, I told you to stay away from that man…he went from being a loner to insane the last time I saw him. He’s not right in the head, and who knows, he might have gotten worse over the years…”
“I have to find him, Mom. Do you know who he could be dating?” I took out a notepad and began to write notes down.
“Hm…I remember seeing him with a blonde woman, very thin, too much makeup, oh and she had a flower in her hair…I don’t rightly remember her name, but I’m sure you could ask around town. I try to avoid him, though, Ares, and you should too…”
I jotted the notes down on the notepad by the telephone.
   “Thanks, Mom. I love you.”
“I love you too, son. I’ll see you around town…”
   I looked at my notes:
-   Taking large amounts of Simoleons out of the bank
-   Sleeps with lots of women
-   Dated Mom, blonde woman, then Emma Hatch
-   Traits: Insane
I scratched my head, a true puzzle indeed. Stiles definitely would be a lot harder to find. Bella came home soon after my conversation with Mom.
“Hey baby, how’s your investigation going?” she kissed me on my cheek.
“Not good. Emma Hatch flipped when I asked her about Stiles…” I pondered the different solutions to Stiles’ odd behavior as I studied my notes.
“What’s that?” Bella asked about my notepad.
“I’ve decided if I’m going find him, I’m going to have to take some notes. Still, nothing is adding up. Unless…” Bella eyed me, “Unless he’s using the women for money…”
“That’s a bold accusation, Ares, but what would he need so much money for?”
“I don’t know, Bella…I don’t know…”

The next morning, Bella and I had the day off from work. I decided the day had come, and I woke her in the bed. She turned on her side and faced me.
“Good morning, gorgeous.” I smiled and brushed her hair out of her face.
“Why’d you wake me up?” she stretched her slender arms in the air and we both threw off the sheets.
“Well, one it’s almost 11AM, and another, I wanted to take you somewhere.” I handed her a dark violet dress with a bright purple bow in the front.
“When did you buy this?!” she shrieked with excitement.
“I had some extra time on my hands.” I kissed her on the lips, “Now get dressed, we’re going somewhere special today.” I put on my tuxedo as well, and drove to fancy bistro, which Emma had shoved me out of the other day. Today, though, she was nowhere to be found and Bella and I had our lunch in peace.
“The food was so delicious, I’m so stuffed. You really shouldn’t have bought me that dark chocolate waterfall cake.” Bella said as we left the restaurant.
“Only the best for my angel.” I said with my hand around her hip.
“Let’s go see a movie!” I looked at her and she grinned.
“Okay!”
“We walked to the theater together, being it wasn’t far from the Little Corsican Bistro, so we walked and talked together. We watched a movie about superheroes and romance, shared a large popcorn and then exited the theater, we then discussed the movie and certain scenes we liked best.
We crossed the street into the park, by then it had gotten late and only a few people in the park remained.
“This was so sweet of you, Ares.” Bella punched my arm. I had never seen her act like a girly girl, but an independent tomboy, just like my little sister, Themis. Bella, however, loved dresses, how they twirled at her thighs when she walked or danced.
“Thank you for the dress, too.” She picked up the end of the dress and felt the fabric.
“It wasn’t much, honest.” I grew queasy and my mind went blank…I fumbled around in my pocket, feeling the velvet around the black case that held the .05 carat diamond ring. We weren’t rich, but I longed to marry her. I knew she’d make a perfect wife…
“Ares? Are you listening?” I snapped back.
“What? Sorry, I was a little distracted.”
“I said do you want to go sit at the water fountain with me?”
At that moment, I saw the blonde, thin woman with the flower in her hair. I had to choose, propose to Bella or approach this woman to find my father…

Is this a continuation of your Rex Rocker story, as in a multi-generational story?  You don't need to start a new thread for each generation.  It's better to just continue in the one thread.  Think of what you would like to title it and I'll merge the two threads for you.

No it isn't. This is a separate story about her son. Its not related to the Rex Rocker story, but contains the same characters.
He's the only character I really wanted to continue because he was emphasized so much in my previous story.

Ok.  You're going to continue writing both stories?

Edit:  Never mind that question.  I saw that your other story is finished.

Yes I am going to continue with this story, I'm hoping it will be longer than my other one, too.
Thanks for helping though.

The odd part was most of these things did happen. I found it odd that the mysterious blonde woman had been there on their date. Anyways, thanks for reading!

Chapter Four: Unexpected Roommate
“Yeah, babe, c’mon.” I took her hand then sighed a breath of relief mixed with uncertainty. I didn’t know if I would get another chance to meet the blonde woman again, but I also didn’t know when I would get another chance to ask Bella to be my bride. So, I decided to choose my future over my past.
“It’s so lovely out tonight.” Bella’s eyes twinkled at me and I kissed her pink cheek.
“Just like you, Bella.” I laughed, and so did she at my corny remark, “You’re my soul mate. You don’t play the ‘guess what I’m thinking’ game. You don’t argue with me when you want to be right and well…I…I love you, Bella.”
“You…you love me?” she sounded confused and unsure.
“Is something wrong?” I felt my back get hot with worry.
   “No, I mean, I just…well, I’ve never thought about it, but I guess I do love you…”
I gradually reached into my pocket, spun around onto my knee, and revealed the tiny engagement ring from inside the black box to Bella.
“Then will you marry me, Bella?”
“Oh my, wow, everything’s moving so quickly!” she paused and gazed at the small diamond I held out before her.
“Well…?” I didn’t think engagement decisions were supposed to last so long…
“Yes, Ares, I will marry you.”
   “Really?!”
“Really.” She smiled and I placed the small rock on her finger. I hugged her; we were going to get married. We headed home in a taxi cab together and as we laid down for bed, I couldn’t have felt more at ease. Bella had said yes and she would soon be Bella Rocker…

I awoke the next morning, eager for the wedding. Too excited, I woke Bella as well and we both set up our Perfect Couple wedding arch with few chairs; we were only inviting family and a few friends. We bought a white banquet table and a beautiful tiered wedding cake. We were so excited; Bella bought a dress in the afternoon for cheap and I put on my tuxedo.
Mom, Asclepius Rocker, Apollo Rocker, Themis Rocker, and Jocasta Bachelor arrived. Jocasta and Bella talked by the banquet table about something, I couldn’t hear over the music and chattering. When I looked back though, Bella looked distressed. I approached her and she wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face into my shoulder.
“Bella, what’s the matter?” I pried her off of me and wiped away her tears.
“Mom just told me that…” she then began to sob more.
   “Shh, what is it baby?”
“My father passed away…that’s why he’s not here!”
“Do you want to cancel the wedding?”
She sniffled a bit, then wiped under her eyes with her index finger.
“I guess not…” she grabbed a napkin off the table and fixed her mascara which had smeared from her tears.
We carried on with the ceremony, Bella finally put new makeup on and we stood under the wedding arch as everyone sat in their seats.
She placed the wedding band on my finger and she looked lovely, like an angel. She had her flowing black hair up in a bun, held together by a clippie. With some baby pink blush, just lightly brushed on her cheeks and dark eye shadow to accentuate her eyes, she looked marvelously brilliant and I stood there, proud to have her as my bride.
I placed the golden wedding band upon her finger and we kissed as our guests applauded our joining of families and the start of a new life together. They then threw rice in the air, both of our moms cried, and we gathered around the cake to cut it.
Bella put the knife into the moist bread of the cake, cutting a fresh slice for her and me to share. We both took chunks of the cake and smeared it on each other’s faces, laughing as we ate the icing around our mouths.
After some dancing, eating, talking, and congratulations, everyone had finally left. Bella and I cleaned up the banquet table, folded the chairs, took down the wedding arch, put away the left over cake, and turned off the music. Bella took a shower and I cleaned up the plates, then we relaxed in bed.
“I really wasn’t expecting you to propose. You were acting so distant and quiet. I thought you weren’t feeling well.” Bella said as she tapped her feet together.
   “I saw the woman, Bella.”
“What woman?” she then turned and looked at me.
“I saw the woman with the blonde hair that’s dating my dad.”
   “Where did you see her?”
“When we were at the park…she was there.”
“Don’t think about that right now,” she leaned over and kissed me, “It’s our honeymoon…” she smiled and we slipped between the sheets.

We enjoyed our honeymoon together; we worked out most of the time or read some books on repairing appliances. I felt sympathy for my new wife for she couldn’t shake a stomach virus, and often had to stop in the middle of her workouts to throw up. She pulled through though and after a couple of days, she came to me with big news.

“Ares, I knew this from the beginning. I had no stomach virus, but I didn’t want to worry you.” She smiled and looked down at her feet.
“What? Wait wait…you didn’t have a stomach virus?”
“No…I was sick because of something else--”
“From seeing me each morning?” I interrupted and she giggled.
“No, not that either. I’m...I’m pregnant!” she jumped a little from enthusiasm.
   “You’re pregnant?!” I couldn’t believe it.
   “Yes!”
“We’re going to have a baby?!”
“Yes!” I hugged her, picking her off the ground.
“We’re going to have a baby!” I kissed her.

I remembered being younger when my mother had gotten pregnant with Asclepius and Apollo. This, however, would be my child—our child. I decided I would hold off on finding my father so I could help with the pregnancy and the baby when it did arrive. I knew it would be months, maybe even years before I started the search again, but I wanted to be in my child’s life, just as Mom had been in mine…

We went out and bought a cute crib, a high chair, potty chair, some pregnancy books for Bella, and of course, some ice cream. Her cravings were insatiable and she often times ate more than even I could hold down. No matter, we were prepared to have a new roommate with us and I grew more excited every day…

Chapter Five: The New Way of Life
I grew anxious as the duration of the pregnancy dragged on, Bella, however, carried on with her normal routine of straightening up the house and reading her books on mechanical fixing. I continued to work out, still being on leave from being married.  After the first trimester ended, a person I wouldn’t have guessed to visit stopped by the house.

“Hi.” She stuck out her hand for me to shake when I opened the door.
“Hello?” I wearily shook her hand.
“May I come in?” she almost looked lost.
   “And you are…?”
“My name is Zelda Mae.” When she turned to the side, I noticed the red flower in her hair.
My heart skipped a beat and I felt lightheaded.
“Uh…yeah, sure…” she stepped inside and familiarized herself with her surroundings, “Can I get you something, a snack maybe or some coffee?”
“No, I’m fine. I wanted to discuss some things with you concerning your father.” She sat on our baby blue sofa.
“My father?” I sat in the matching recliner next to her.
“Yes…I heard from a little bird that you’ve been seeking him out. Don’t. Stop now while you’re still out of the loop. The man is insane and I’m only dating him at the moment to do a profile scan of him. You can’t trust who he says he is and you can’t be sure about anything he’s doing.”
   “What do you mean?”
“I mean: the man, is, a liar.” She emphasized "liar".
“Explain one thing to me then.” I leaned forward, placing my elbows on my knees, “Why is he taking so much money out of the bank?”
“That’s one of the reasons I’ve been focusing all of my time on him, he’s up to no good and I hear it has something to do with the real estate in town, but then again, if he tells me anything, I never listen to it wholly because 90% of it is usually a lie.” She scratched above her eyebrow then placed her head against her fist, “He’s a crook and a thief. I would ask the woman he dated before me though; she seemed to have a very intimate relationship with him.”
   “My mother, Rex Rocker?”
“Hm…that’s not the name I remember him saying…I believe it was a Vita Alto? Anyways, I have to go home now, he’ll probably get paranoid if I stay gone for too much longer.” She rose from the couch and as quick as she appeared, she left.

I had heard of Vita Alto, a mean natured woman with nothing nice to say, yet somehow one of the richest people in Sunset Valley. I decided to change my notes:
-   Taking large amounts of Simoleons out of the bank
-   Could have something to do with real estate
-   Sleeps with lots of women

I couldn’t focus on the investigation quite just yet, I had a baby pretty close to being due and we still hadn’t the chance to buy toys or books.
The next week another surprise appeared at our doorstep. An adorable red and white Irish setter slept at the foot of our steps. We brought her into our home and named her Sapphire, after which, we built a small fenced in part beside the house.
The second trimester finally ended and Bella’s stomach appeared as if someone had stuffed a watermelon up her shirt. Her belly had gotten huge and often times I would feel the baby’s feet bumping out to greet me. I gave her back rubs in the morning and made breakfast for her. She thanked me often, but I had empathy for the pain she carried in front of her each day and admired her strength.
The day to return back to work came and I headed out early in the morning, Bella sat on the loveseat reading her book, she kissed me good-bye and I drove to work. I fretted that she would go into labor any second, but she comforted me saying that the baby’s due date wasn’t for a week and a half. My drill sergeant seemed in a very sour mood that work day, so when I got a call from Bella that afternoon, I eagerly answered.
“Ares! I’m going into labor!” then she hung up.
I stood there, not really knowing what to do; my brain didn’t really soak in the reality that flashed before me. Then…THE BABY’S COMING! I sprinted to my car and sped to the hospital; I practically tripped through the automatic doors on the way in, and then zipped down the hall to the delivery room. There Bella sat on the hospital bed, her hair in a mess, beads of sweat dripping down her forehead, and her face fire red.
“Hey baby! I’m so sorry I’m late!”
“Its fine!” she dragged out the "fine" when she began to push again. Then a baby boy appeared from under her hospital gown, red and blue and screaming to the top of his lungs. I cut the umbilical cord and kissed Bella’s sweaty hair.
“There’s the first one.” The doctor said after he handed our baby to the nurse, then he sat down as if waiting for another baby.
“What do you mean ‘first one’?” I asked.
“I mean, you’re having twins.” He looked up at me from behind his surgical mask. Bella pushed with all of her might, groaning and crying the entire way. Then, as the doctor had predicted, a second baby boy appeared, screaming as the first one had done and equally discolored.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Rocker, you gave birth to two healthy baby boys!”
“What do you want to name them?” the nurse asked Bella and I. I looked down at her, we had discussed a few names, but I left it up to her.
“Zeus and Poseidon.” She smiled up at me. I pleaded with her to continue the Greek names that ran through my family (mostly just my siblings.) I told her we could name the boy Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades. The last one sounded a bit morbid, but they were all brothers in mythology. I figured if we had other boys in the future, we could name them after the other Greek gods.
“You did so good, honey.” I smiled down at her and in a few moments, they brought back two baby boys bundled into blue blankets. I held Poseidon who cozily slept in my arms, my eyes swelled when I looked at him and I began to cry. The little infant looked so innocent and helpless, I wanted to protect him with my life, I wanted to raise him to be brave and strong, just like me, and to be smart and wise like his mother. I instantly fell in love with him and his brother and we brought our two new additions to our small family home. Bella and I could finally get a night’s rest again from being stressed about the pregnancy…
