I came across this preview of SimCity, and I have to say it looks amazing. I'm very tempted to get it now :)

Did anyone here get a beta key? I've heard a few reports that you have to play it online and getting connected to the servers is taking up to 30 minutes, and that's just the beta testers. What will it be like when it's released to the worldwide gaming community?
I've already decided not to get it straight away. For one, I'm not sure my computer as it is will handle it. Secondly, it's being released the same day as University, and I'm trying to save money (for a new computer). While I have always loved Sim City (in whatever form), Sims takes precedence, so that's where my money will go. I will buy it, but I will probably wait till I have my new computer and by that time, the price will have dropped hopefully.

I reviewed their trailers, etc.; and it is way better than I thought. I'm in a pickle, because my husband is an environmentalist and sustainable developer for his company (won't say who, but big and all over the world). If he sees this, he'll be up all night trying to prove his theories!

I'll probaly buy it anyways!

Just wondering if anyone else on the forum applied/got into the SimCity Beta testing. It's pretty cool so far!

We have a thread for SimCity so I'll merge the threads together, some people were asking about the Beta so maybe you could share some insights!  :)

I had a key for the beta version. It was as good as I hoped it would be. The way they paired the power, sewage, water, and electricity with the roads is genius. Far less complicated than previous SimCity games, and much more user friendly. In fact, my fiance who has never played a SimCity game jumped right in and was able to build a town with minimal direction. I have to say that I am not pleased with the always online servers. It caused huge amounts of lag upon loading and massive problems with their servers kept a lot of people from being able to play the beta version. I'm hoping they really have their ducks in a row upon launch, otherwise they'll have a problem just like Blizzard had with Diablo 3. The game itself looks really really good. The final graphics are going to be spectacular. I even noticed many of the major Sims 3 building (the town hall and grade school in particular) showed up, which I was super excited about.

One of the things I really didn't care for was the zoom functionality. I'm a massive control freak and  a big micro-manager and I found it difficult to see everything that was going on at once, simply because I couldn't see my entire town at once. In fact, I am so used to the way the camera in The Sims 3 functions, I had a really hard time managing what I was looking at period. Something that comes with time I guess.

Bottom line comes down to this: I've already pre-ordered the game, as has my fiance. I think it will be well worth the money and I can't wait to play it.

I've not played SimCity for years (didn't really like 4000), but a really good multiplayer economic game is something I've been waiting for.  So, I think this is going to be a must - just hope my PC can cope!

For anyone in the UK, the Limited Edition is available for pre-order from Amazon at £34.99 and will be dispatched on 8th March.

Sadly, economics means I have to make a choice, SimCity or Sims Uni.  I think the former will win.

I'm a little unsure exactly how the multiplay works.  Can anyone clarify?  The info I have found says you can play a single city or up to 16 cities.  Does this mean that players will be locked into a 16 block area?  Will we have to find a group of players to join us in a single block?  I have never played an on-line game so, any help, or advice on how this will work would be appreciated.

I'll make it simple:
Each region can only hold a maximum number of 16 cities.
Other player can build cities in your region, you cannot alter their city.
You can play privately in one region (no other players)
You can collaborate with other players to build superstructures(?) in the space between cities.
There may be more but I have limited information on SimCity for now.

So, does this mean that if I were to set-up in a region with 15 others, we would all have to be on line together to continue play?

No, the playing is asynchronous, meaning you don't have to be all online at the same time. Their city will be updated only when they play again.

Thank you YZJay

Couple more "idiot" questions!

If I buy physical disks, will I need to have a disk in the drive to play?

Will the sixteen cities within each area be connected, for trade, travel etc. to the other area blocks. or will they be played in isolation?

If we start playing in a block with several others, but, wish to play alone, or in another block either instead or simultaneously, will this be possible?

I'm don't know if you require the disk to play since it hasn't hit the shelves yet.
Yes, all cities in each region will be connected, just like cities in SimCity 4.
There is a private mode where you can play an entire region by yourself without worrying about other players using up valuable space or resources in the region, although there is no offline mode.
All information I know came from the official website and other publications, if you need to know more the reddit Q&A was quite helpful.

Thank you YZKay.  I have been searching the net for info.  Found quite a bit.  Also stumbled on a lot of gainsayers.  I can't say I found them helpful, mostly moans about the size of each city block.  Can't see the problem there though a 2x2 km block is small, but, as I see it you can work several blocks in co-operation so one block would be fine for a city centre.  After all London's city centre is known as the square mile and it is juct about that size. :)

My son and I are going to order the Limited Edition.  Can't wait!

Thanks again YZ.

I just signed up for the second beta. Probably won't get a spot though, because after you sign up it says pre-order now to guarantee your spot in the upcoming beta! I'm not going to pre-order through origin, so I'll be at the bottom of the list. If you want to sign up, here's where you go  http://www.simcity.com/en_US/beta

I was invited to join beta test #1 but as I was busy that weekend I missed it. This second beta is apparently for 24 hours only. I really don't understand why they do these limited time beta tests. If SimCity is the top priority for Maxis, they should have a continuous beta. More data collected = more accurate results. And since the game will require full online connectivity, I'm quite concerned about the way they are running these tests.
