I have read at Wiki and some other sites and think here that townies have specific careers.  I have searched and can't find anything about if they change from game town to game town.

In several of the ones I have played, Yumi Sekemoto has has the Culinary career, but I started a new town to do the Spy wish and Yumi is my sims boss; a Lt (arm hurts too much to use my big dictionary to hunt correct spelling, wish there was a spell check here).
Anyhow it has me curious as to what other careers other townies have.  And how it affects their traits; Yumi has neurotic, and several other negative traits.

If a townie is unemployed at the start and your sim gets a career, a random unemployed townie will usually be employed in that career as a boss or co-worker if there's empty spots.

So he will have an interesting life, with a nut for a boss.  Oh well, I live with a nut 24-7 myself, so I think my sim can handle with is tossed his way.

Gunther Goth starts in the business career, but he retires only a few days into the game.
Leighton Sekemoto is in the sports career.
Emma Hatch is in the culinary career.
Jared Frio is in the culinary career.
Boyd Wainwright is in the science career.
The Landgraab father is in medical career.  (Can think of his first name.)
Claire Ursine is in the criminal career.

I know more, but can't think of them right now.

I've used SSV for challenges quite a bit, so it pays to know who works where, what their traits are etc. I've looked them up on the wiki so many times I know most of them by heart now. I can send my charismatic sim up to just about any employed sim, and a few unemployed ones, and make friends with them in just a couple of sim hours.

Beau Andrews is unemployed while his wife Victoria is a freelance writer
Bachelor family Jocasta works at the bookstore and Simis is in journalism
Clavell, both are retired, she is in music
Connor Frio is in journalism
Sabrina Funke is in science
Gus Hart is a produce assessor and Dorie works at the bookstore
Dustin Lanqerak is unemployed and his wife Iliana is in business
Lum Theodore and Lily are both unemployed

I knew that Leighton Sekemoto is in sports, and I was thinking his mom was in culinary, but more retired than working.  Which is what had confused me; I  had gathered she was not only retired, but from the culinary field, not law enforcement.

I knew that Leighton Sekemoto is in sports, and thinking his mom was in culinary, but more retired than working.  Which is what had confused me; I  had gathered she was not only retired, but from the culinary field, not law enforcement.

I believe that the game treats retirement as unemployed, at least in terms of being eligible to be a sim's new boss or coworker - the previous job ends up being irrelevant. For example, in Riverview Nellie Spenster is generally retired from the culinary career, but in a game where I did the education career she ended up being my sim's boss. I couldn't move her in at the time or go into edit town so I can't say for certain whether or not her previous career would have showed up on her career tab, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't on there.
