Horses/Unicorns! I loves cats; but in the game they destroy everything by scratching. My sim doesn't have time to deal with it. My REAL cats, don't scratch my furniture, etc., and I have not done any training. Hate the fact that the dogs tear up the paper. My dogs never did that in real life. Horses seem to be easier to manage in the sims. Unless you want to train them for racing or jumping, you can just ride them.

Horses all the way!! Ive been riding and schooling horses most of my life, so I just had to create a sim to do that.
I also kinda like ts3 birds, they can be quite fun to work with. Dogs are cool, too, but I always give mine the non destructive trait.
I pretty much like all the pets, but horses the most.

I love 'em all, but I'd have to go with cats if I had to pick one favourite. They're just adorable, really well animated, and since cats are independent little buggers IRL I feel less bad when I'm too busy to look after them all the time than I do with dogs and horses. The latter in particular can be really time-consuming if you want to look after them "properly".

@simmese: gorgeous dogs! :)

Yes, your dogs are beautiful.  Give the one named Gypsy a hug from me.  I lost my girl a month ago; a Manchester Terrier, she was 17 years old.  It still hurts and increased the ache for Obe, the family Sheltie who we lost five years ago, he was also 17.
We have two left (husband's and son's), no more dogs for me; I can't bear the pain of losing another one.  Even a sims pet dog, I have decided that it will be too hard to deal with, so no dogs in the game.

The cycle of life, it just sucks at times.

I want a dog and a cat.. I want a horse..

Tell me honestly.. How much of a bother is it micromanaging them? That is not truly appealing.. Worrying over all their various meters as I do with the sims...

They're pretty good at taking care of themselves, especially when there are two or more pets (ideally of the same species) who can interact with each other. You can for the most part get as much or as little involved as you want. Got a horse? A box stall has infinite water and hay, they can also graze on grass and drink from ponds. Got a dog or cat? They don't have a separate Thirst need as horses do, instead they fill their Hunger bar when drinking. So you could even technically get away with not even buying food bowl, provided there's water nearby.

You should watch dogs and cats a bit in the beginning, so they don't vent their destructive urges on furniture but instead use their toys (dogs) or scratching post/cat condo (kitty). Cats are good at going to the litterbox by themselves when they need, dogs will need some guidance to pee outside. Once the pet is Neat and Non-Destructive, you don't have to worry about this sort of thing anymore either, and they develop those traits quite quickly with some manual coaching and some praise form their Sim.
