FPS... Super high
« on: May 30, 2012, 02:47:00 AM »
I'm scared that my FPS might kill my graphics card again! It's usually 180!!! I tried using fps limiter but it didn't work.. Any other suggestions on making it less?

What graphic card do you have? If it is a nvidia go to the nvidia control panel and put vertical sync on force on. Make sure it is global setting. It will force your fps to go not higher than 60.

I think that only works for Nvidia Cards. :-\ My advice is to increase the resolution and your graphics!! Unless they're already maxed.. (You lucky, lucky thing.. Mine are at a mix of medium and high and together with the highest resolution is giving me an average FPS of 12 :P )

Wont the resolution make me not be able to see it on the screen?

Not to sound like a complete idiot. What exactly is a FPS,what happens if they are too high, what is considered too high, and where do I find out how high mine are.

Depends on your own screen resolution, give it a try. Remember to test screenshots too, for some reason the second highest res for me looks fine in game but comes out looking super weird in screenshots. What about the graphics?

Don't worry, I only found out a while ago! It means Frame Per Second, and I'm probably going to be horrid at describing it. Erm.. basically, a laggy game would have a very low and stuttering fps (although some games with super high FPS's may stutter the game as well). It's like, the frame rate per second.. Erm.. The way the game goes.. How fast it moves, if you get what I mean? *sigh* I give up, I know what it is but I can't describe it. :P Someone else will come along and do a better job. As for the other questions, I think the optimum FPS is usually about 20-30, higher than that isn't too bad unless it's going at a number like 90 and even worse is Warr's massive 180!! If it goes too high, it can potentially damage your card - that's a whole lot of pressure being put on it. To find out your fps in game, open up the cheat console and just type in "fps on". A little white number comes up in the right hand corner. That's your fps. It changes, it goes up and down, but you'll be able to tell which number you see the most. :) Mine is 12 which isn't too great but I'm hardly experiencing lag so I'm not worrying at the moment.

I'll see what happens

Thank you Fez you did a really good job of explaining it to a techno-novice like me. I am not a technophobe I do not fear it I just don't understand it.

I genuinely think you can give all maxed a go. How is the fps now?

Really? I always think I'm really bad at describing things. :P Well I'm glad it helped. :)

EDIT: Warr, is advanced rendering on? That can usually lower an fps nicely.

Ticked all the boxes, made highest graphics and got the FPS to 20. It lagged alot then so I changed some down to medium and now its at 35 when playing on x1 speed, 25 on x3.  :) However it is 120 when paused! Is that normal? And will it effect me?  :o

It lagged at 20? That's weird.. My 12 is working fine. Oh well, 35 sounds good. :) I have no clue about the paused thing but I doubt it will affect you as long as it isn't that high while the game is actually running. A paused game won't burn out your card. It's probably just so high because you have an awesome card. ;) I don't really know, I guess someone more tech savvy will come along and explain it for us.

Hopefully  :P Yes when I bought the card (I was desperate I needed one that instant!  ;D) The Pc guy that sold it to us said it was a really good card and could run nearly anything, it was only just decreased in price from £130 to £60 this year and then it was on offer! So I ended up getting it for £45  ;D Now who is a tech savvy here....

The force thing only is for nvidia. Before I did it mine was 80 and I know ity was to high. Now it never go higher than 60 and in a big house it is 30. Warr what is your fps in CAH? Mine was high and in a basement it was scary high up to 120. But force vsync fixed it. What is your graphic settings if you click default?

In fullscreen mode (if you don't have to play windowed), there is an option to make your default fps a certain number under options near where you change resolution.  Did you try that?  At least as far as I can tell that's what it does anyway.  It's supposed to make the game not anymore than that.
