How do I populate worlds from the exchange

You just move Sims into the houses. That or let Story Progression do it's magic, I've heard of it filling a medium sized world within two sim days.

This is good to hear about the auto population. I downloaded a gorgeous world from The Exchange called Landview. It has a few missing community lots, like a fire station, but the map paining and houses are really very pretty. There is a dam and river in it too that is really nice.

But the world was entirely empty of families. I started adding my own. I think I will just play on story progression for two weeks and see what happens.
