New laptop, new dilemma - Error with launcher startup
« on: May 23, 2012, 08:28:23 PM »
So, my new laptop decided to do a restart while I was doing the main patch for sims 3, Got it back up and redid the patch, but now whenever I bring the launcher up it says: There was an error during startup. Please see the Log for more details.

This has never happened to me before, and it's stopping me from completing the generations installation. What is it about? How do I remedy it? I'd hate to have to uninstall and reinstall, cause even though this is a gaming laptop, supposedly, it seems to take forever to download/install.

And the first two times I did go in to play a game, I did uninstall and reinstall because of it, I'd get through making a sim and choosing a place to live, then it would promptly stop working, so I lost the sim each time, as I didn't even get to save. So I decided to stick with just the base game, ambitions and generations, instead of including the world adventures, showtime, pets, and late night expansions that I also have.

Even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the base game, and it didn't help.

I don't know that doing just the base game would really help.  You'd need to do it for all the expansions and stuff packs, too.

Ugh! I'm giving it one last try, using the manual instructions. If that doesn't work, I really don't know what will. At this point it's just getting to be so much hassle.

EDIT: Gah! Didn't work, it's still saying the same thing. This is really making feel like giving up altogether.

This is so ridiculous and annoying. All because the new laptop decided to restart during the patch. Eve tried uninstalling and reinstalling origin and that didn't help. Seems like nothing is going to work, unless someone knows how to sort this out. I am seriously ready to give up.

Are you saying that the re-install didn't fix the problem because the laptop restarted itself during one of the patches?

It sure seems that way.

EDIT: Found a video on youtube that said registry keys was the problem, so I tried that and did find a couple that needed deleting. Yet that didn't solve it. I even checked each part, for the main sims folder and for the other things.

Found some bits in other places that needed removing, and still getting the message. I am so frustrated that I can't get to play.

If it restarted during the patch then I will have to assume that it is an incomplete patching problem. Have you tried manually installing the patch that was halted?

If that doesn't work then I would have to suggest the only way to fix this problem would be to un-installing everything related to TS3 and Origin (EADM) then doing a complete registry clean, disk clean-up, and de-fragmentation of the drive and then re-installing.

This really shouldn't be an unfixable problem, software problems can be tricky but they are very rarely permanent.

Kindest Regards
KJ

I think KJSinclair has very good advice there.  At this point, I think you should just remove everything manually, do some maintenance on your computer and start over again.  I know it's frustrating, but it's the best way to get your game back.  Check the Technical Help board for information on how to uninstall manually, how to do clean up on your computer, and how to re-install.  There should be sticky topics that cover all of it.

Still no luck. Completely did all of it, lets me do the patch, then says the same thing.

You've restarted your computer, deleted your recycle bin and all that?  You have an updated Origin and you are absolutely 100% certain that there was nothing Sims 3 related anywhere on your computer when you installed the game and all it's EPs then you patched and it still gives you the error?

I'm wondering because your last reply was 3 this afternoon my time and it's now 8PM.  It takes me longer than 5 hours to run the defrag, clean up all files and to install the base game, origin plus patch.

Defrag doesn't take long at all as the laptop is only a few days old, hardly anything on the hard drive to defrag. Only put in the base game, as it happens as soon as I've done the patch and generations needs an update through the launcher to install properly. It's meant to be a gaming laptop too, the specs are more than enough to handle running the game. I have considered not doing the patch, at least to start with.
