Best way to earn money gardening?
« on: May 24, 2010, 02:28:22 AM »
I found that I really enjoy the gardening aspect of the sims as it's something I'd like to in real life. I was wondering, what is the best way to earn money gardening? I would like my sim to be self-sufficient just by gardening. Does it make a difference when you sell your crop to the supermarket or from your inventory?

I find money trees to be the best way to make money. My favourite family got most of their money (200K++) from money trees, and they hardly ever die too - they seem to last forever!

Money trees don't die? Well, that's a good thing to know. Although I don't have any one yet (no idea how to get them), what I do know is that when you forget to water them or pay atention, you are going to find bills instead of money growing from it. :D Which is a bit of funny I think.

To get back on topic: besides the money trees, growing a vegyplant, or omniplant (what is the name in my Dutch game) will get you even more money I think. Because it can grow almost anything. I havent tested it yet, because I still stuck in the grow cheese to get eventually the omnyplant, but I know you can grow books with it, masterpieces, if you like. Well, if you plant a real good masterpiece, you will grow a lot of them and when you sell those... you will becoming a really healthy gardener. :D

Money trees do die eventually, but it takes them forever.  I have only had a couple of them die, but it seems they almost lasted the lifetime of my gardner sim, but, I will tell you something strange that did happen after my gardner sim passed away, the money trees were gone too.  I have never had that happen before, so not quite sure what to make of this.

Yes, money trees and omni plants are good sources of income when you do get a chance to grow them.  The guide has alot of that information you are looking for.

Are you sure they've died from age? I have money trees as old as 4-5 generations and counting!

Yeah but what age settings are you on - short, normal, long or epic?

I think that both money trees and omniplants are good, Omni plants you can feed them the expensive Chinese books or even perfect Deathfish if you get round to fishing, I didn't know you could feed paintings!  ;)

Garlic is also a pretty good cash crop.  It's good for when you don't have a high enough gardening skill to plant the special seeds that are needed for money trees.

Thanks everyone! I haven't gotten a chance to play particular families long enough and I tend to get side-tracked by adventures. One of my sims did get the ability to plant cheese and eggs. I read the guide about it, so I was pretty excited to soon have the opportunity to plant the Omni Plant. I haven't read too much into it, but it sounds really neat!

After cheese and eggs, they'll get the ability to plant steaks and burgers.  After that will come the opportunity to raise the Omni Plant.  Keep your skill opportunity clear so you can get these gardening ones soon!

As soon as my sim harvested the money tree, it turned black and had to dispose of it, but that has only happened a couple of times, for the most part, they seem to live forever.

The only thing that will kill a money tree is lack of water.  As long as they are properly cared for, they will live basically forever.  I've never seen one die of old age or become barren like the other plants do.  I, too, keep money trees for several generations at a time.

Yes my money trees have lasted generations, though I think I might have had 1 die a few generations back... I have sprinklers with the automatic sprinkling upgrade so they always get watered. And I always have one sim tending the garden every day. Just weeding and harvesting my garden is a lot to do for one sim. And I had my green thumb gardener a few generations ago get about 6 omni plants - when I realised he would die soon I got him to send for more. I wish I'd got even more. Now, about 1.5 generations later, they're dieing off. The good thing is though, that anyone can feed them, not just the gardener sim who completes the challenge. I just used the most expensive book at the book shop. But I still found money trees to be an easier way to get money. I don't have to remember to feed them, and they last longer.

I don't have an explanation on that one, I too had the automatic sprinkler, but it did go barren.  Like I said, I have not had any die since then, I always kept them watered, maybe it was just a fluke or something.

Once my gardeners reach level 10 and meet the skill challenges, they store 2 of each perfect fruit or vegetable in a chest and then grow only garlic, flame fruit, life fruit, money trees, and omniplants. Garlic and the other two are used to fertilize the money trees. I routinely make $20-30,000 a day from the trees.

I should mention that with Suave Seller, consignment profits on crops are huge.
