FPS Limiter
« on: May 17, 2012, 01:23:50 AM »
How do I install the FPS limiter onto my TS3 game? Does anyone have any instructions/experience with this mod? How well does it work, and is this even a mod?

If it matters, I'm on a Windows Vista 32 Bit (RAM hogging I know but I've had zero problems outside of UC since I installed a brand new graphics card during the Holiday season).

What kind of graphics card are you using? If you only/almost only play in Full Screen mode, turn on Vsync in the game options, and you'll be fine. The Vsync option doesn't seem to work for most people in Windowed Mode though (me included). If you play mostly in Windowed mode, you'll need to use an FPS Limiter.

There isn't any FPS Limiter available in the form of a mod. FPS Limiter is a third party tool which is tells your graphics card to throttle down the FPS. I don't use a FPS Limiter anymore, because I am using a beta version of my graphics card driver (nVidia) and EVGA's Precision X, which enables me to limit my FPS. Before I started using that, I used the FPS Limiter from MATY, so that is the only one I am familiar with. I can help with that one (or the beta nvidia driver+Precision X route, if that's what you're in interested in), but I'm not sure if that's the one you are looking to use.

I am running on NVIDIA GT 520. It's attached to my G33/G31 Chipset. I'm experienced with mods, and a fast learner with computers, but I'm always still learning new things. I'm looking into the FPS Limiter because I heard it will help.

So, do you mainly play in Fullscreen or Windowed mode? If you play in fullscreen mode, you won't need an FPS Limiter at all. Simply open the options menu in game, and in the Graphics tab go to the "Screen Refresh Rate" pull down menu. Set it to 60 and you're good to go.

You can also find out if you need an FPS Limiter by typing the following cheat into the cheat console: fps on
You'll notice a white number pop up in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Zoom around the neighborhood a bit, and let the game run at at normal speed for a few minutes. During this time, play close attention to the FPS in the corner. If the number is very often above 100, you might want to use an FPS Limiter.

I normally play full. I did check my FPS and it has gone up 100 quite a bit, back down to 20. I'm trying to keep it balanced, between 30 and 40. So where and how do I download it onto my game?

You don't need to register for that site, installing it is easy. Make sure you downloaded both 3booter and Fpslimiter. Extract 3booter, FPS_Limiter, HookHelper.dll and Limiter_D3D9.dll into your Sims 3 folder. It needs to go in your your folder under program files rather than the one under documents where you put your mods. If you're on Windows 7 it's a bit different than other systems because we have two program files folders, in that case it's program files (x86). So for example my path would be C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3. Here's a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about.

After installing it you'll no longer start the game the way you normally do. You double click on 3booter to start it otherwise the fps limiter won't work. And that's pretty much all you have to do, it's fairly straight forward and easy. You don't have to continually worry about it as long as you install it properly and start the game the new way. Your fps should hover around 30-32ish, depending on your card it could go into the 20's or possibly lower if you're in an intensive graphic area.

I wouldn't really consider this a mod per say like you would with master controller. It's a program that limits the fps of the game and has no in game functionality play wise. I've been using it for about a year now and have had no problems, before I started using it Sims had ended up frying my old video card.

I'm on 32bit for Vista, and I downloaded all my games on the Origin Manager. So would I have to go to the Origin Downloads? I have one folder that says The Sims 3 and The Sims 3 (TM).

EDIT: Will I have to update the 3D booster, with each patch? What other websites have the 3DBooster and FPS limiter?

Yea you'd have to go into the Origin folder, I believe it would be just the normal one not the (TM) but look inside each and see what the folders inside are. You'll want the one that is similar to the screenshot I posted.

I've never seen an update for either Fpslimiter or 3booter, it's not something that would be changed by a patch, stuff pack or expansion pack. I'll PM you the link where I got mine from.

Just so you know, I'm over the age of 18. I know that sounds a bit irrelevant, but just in case the link has adult content in it.

Oh no it has nothing to do with age. I've never dug around on that site so I don't know what all it contains, I've only used it for the two files. So, rather than link something on the forums that I'm not 100% sure about, I'd rather PM it to people that need it.

*Edit*
On a side note, you can open up Origin and see where it installs your games through settings to make sure that's the right area.

So I went to the folder with the files you mentioned, but I have an installer folder. Is there a different one or is it because I have a digital copy of the base game? Should I delete those extra folders?

I wouldn't delete any folders. You just need to find out where your games are installed to and then pop them in the base game folder.
