Help with some weird stuff I noticed throughout gameplay.
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:35:19 PM »
Hey everyone, I just introduced myself on the "introduce yourself" thread. There, I said I stopped playing The Sims back when there was only the game base out, and never really tried any of the expansion packs. Last week I decided I wanted to give it a try and installed all the packs at once, so there's a lot new to see since my experiences with the base game. I've been playing incessantly. I won't give my sims a rest! So far, I noticed some interesting things I want so share with you. Probably a lot of these have been discussed on the forum already, but there are countless threads to browse, so... anyway:

First of all, I should say that when starting a brand new game, I always begin with a single sim and with the story mode off. I like to make them focus and succeed on their career and gain skills first and only let them fall in love and start a family much later on. I've been playing with 4 households (one of them has a pet, but he's still single, lol).

1: This might be the weirdest one. Whenever I change households my sim has a brand new car in their inventory! Sometimes even a very expensive car. The thing is, I don't like my sims to have a car in the very beginning of the game, so it feels like cheating when I sell their car and get money from that. I change the household again, and there it is a car in the inventory. What is that? A bug? Has it been fixed?

2: Even with the story mode off, I had a sim who adopted three horses to his household while I was playing with another sim. It was really funny to switch to his house and see all those horses running around. But is that supposed to happen? That's why I don't play with the story mode on, they can act like crazy and adopt babies even if they're single and jobless, quit careers and stuff like that. It's kinda annoying.

3: I was playing with a sim who had the "make 3 monsters" as a lifetime wish. I sent her to increase her inventing skills at the inventing object (don't remember how it's called, it's the one with the scraps) and immediately decided to switch to my firefighter sim and let her do her business. As soon as I changed households, my firefighter got an emergency call and my screen went all the way up and showed my inventor sim... on fire! I clicked on the action to put it out but my sim wouldn't respond. He just cancelled the action and stood there, even if it was his duty. I tried several times, but nothing happened, not even those "I can't get there" tantrums. Then, the tragedy happened: my inventor died a horrible death. And her ashes remain until today. What's the deal with that?

4: I've been reading the Late Night and Showtime forums and I know many people complain about this, but I'll have to say it: all the celebrity thing is really annoying. I wish you could just choose not to be one. It **es me off how easy it is to become a celebrity. I hope they fix that soon.

5: I have a sim who achieved his lifetime goal as an author (painter and writer). I picked the painting as his self-employment job and he already mastered his career. If I decide to switch to the writing job will the paintings still cost as much?

One of the things I noticed just now is that my to-be Superstar Athlete [Who was around level 5 in his career at the time], was playing ball with his daughter [who is going to be a doctor], and that he pitched like a professional baseball pitcher.

Welcome to our Forum, Stiborski.

When your Sim caught fire, what did you try to do to put it out?  The best thing is to send your Sim to the shower.  But if your Sim was completely unresponsive, I would suggest you try pausing the game and then resetting the Sim.  Hopefully, that would either put the fire out or free the Sim to go to the shower as commanded.

I'd also like to suggest that if you're actually asking for help with your weird stuff that you make the subject of this thread more specific.  As it is now, it is likely to catch a lot of things that people consider "weird" and it will be hard to sort through the information that should have its own topic.  Just use "Modify" on the first post to change the subject.

@Axiom:

That's been how playing catch has been since the game was released.  The more athletic skill a Sim has, the better he/she throws the ball.

Thanks for the tip, Pam! I just added a "help with" to the subject, I hope people realize I'm actually asking for help.

And I wasn't controlling the sim on fire, I had just switched to other household, the one with the firefighter career. He got the call to an emergency but something was preventing him to go to her lot and put out the fire. Even if I kept on demanding him to go, he would cancel the action. I didn't bother changing back to her household to try to deal with it, though. I didn't care much for her (does that make me a mean person? lol)

Sorry, I can't help with your weird stuff.  I did once try the firefighter career but found it frustrating because the firefighting sim regularly refused to attend a fire and I never figured out why.  It's too late now, but I guess you could have switched household as soon as your firefighter refused to go, you might have been able to get him in the bath.   Sorry you lost your sim.  RIP sim.

I find it weird that if you send a single (unatached) sim on holiday you often find that when you arrive home you are married with a child to one of the inhabitants of the place you visited.  Very weird.  I don't know if there is a ligitimate solution, but I too prefer to play a single sim initially, so now I make an engaged couple, place them in the selected lot, split the household and place the fiance in another home.  Problem solved, and a ready made partner when I'm ready to marry and start a family.

One more weird thing: I bought a genie lamp with my lifetime points and just noticed there's a different genie inside it whenever I switch households, come back from vacation or quit the game. Basically I have unlimited wishes. Is that a glitch? Has it been fixed?

1. Most of my Sims have some car called 'Big Lemon' or something.  I think it is jut so you don't have to always take a taxi or something. Otherwise, I think your Sim might be a thief. xD You should be concerned.

2. Maybe they were just really lonely?

3. Sorry, I don''t know how to answer this.

4. Not really a question...
I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it.  :D

I might be able to help with a couple of the comments/questions.

Question #1: I've had this happen in my game. My theory is if you have free will on, sim people will go about their daily lives picking up whatever along the way. This includes getting new expensive cars. Best that I can think of is when you go to play them, sell off the car, and use the familyFunds cheat to take the money they get from the sale away, if your wanting to work with a limited amount of household money.

Comment # 4: I hate the Celebrity/Paparazzi thing too. If you're okay with using mods, I'd suggest a few from Nraas. StoryProgression, MasterController and Register. As they all help with Keeping Celbrities and Paparazzi out of your game.

See Game Modifications for more info and help with Mods:

Let me know if you'd like to know how I use these mods, and I'll share my notes with you.
