Babies afraid of the dark
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:38:34 PM »
In one of my sim families I had two babies.  I had the cribs side by side but decided to move one as mom and dad kept getting in each others way.  The spot I had them in is where I have some big windows (I like LOTS of windows) and when I moved one she was in an area that had only one small window.
It popped up two different night that she was afraid of the dark, and needed to sleep near a window to have the light.  Her moodlet dropped but as soon as I moved her back it went up and she was a happy little girl.

Is this a random thing that just pops up?  I had thought windows didn't matter very much to sims; having one in a room was all that was needed.

I have had it happen in another sim family, with a toddler when I moved her crib; it popped that she was afraid of the dark.  Since she was to age up the next day I didn't bother to move her.

Has anyone else had this happen to their sim babies/toddlers?

Any sim will get afraid of the dark if there is no sort of light, although it is especially present with cowardly sims. An easy fix is to just have a ceiling lamp or something that can be on 24/7.

Since when did all Sims get afraid of the dark? Normally in my experience, they're only afraid of the dark if you leave them in the cemetery at night. Except for the Evil and Brave Sims. The only Sims that are always afraid of the dark are cowards.

I've had sims who will be afraid of the dark if all the lights are off and it is night so there is no source of light from the windows.

I don't think it's right to say all Sims will be afraid of the dark. Most will get a negative moodlet if they are in a room with no lights, but this is different from being afraid of the dark.

Sims with the Coward trait will be afraid of the dark.  The others will get a moodlet for it being dark if there are no lights in a room and it's nighttime.

@Janna:

Did that toddler have the Coward trait?

Nope, they both have Athletic and Brave.  Am focusing on them being either in law enforcement or the martial arts LTW.  I wonder if it is the fact that they are babies; maybe the programing is set up for some sims under a certain age to have the fear of the dark?
The father is in law enforcement and one of his traits is brave, mom (my sim) is an author.  They are my twin babies.  They just aged up and I have given them the Disciplined trait.

I have the family on hold right now, I am looking for a bigger house for them.

The other baby in my other family traits are Love of Outdoors and Artistic.

As for the lights, they go off when everyone goes to bed, or at least in my sims homes they seem to.  They come back on when a sim comes into the room.  It is like evening, when the sun is going down, twilight.

What made me think of it is my sim family in SV, with Conner and Sasha, I was putting the crib, potty chair and other baby stuff in the "attic" and realized that one of the babies/toddlers had been beside the chimmey, and she didn't seem to mind the darkess.  The boy was beside the window, so he had plenty of light.  For a while she had her days and night mixed up and spent a good part of the night singing and playing in her crib while everyone slept.

@Pam: The Coward trait isn't available for a Sim until childhood. It's not something a Sims could be born with.

Re: the windows - I got a pop-up for my adult sim saying that "perhaps a window would brighten up the room?" so from that I guess sims do seem to care about windows.

I had my kids room in the basement with no windows and never saw "afraid of the dark" pop up.

I get the afraid of the dark moodlet with my toddlers and babies just because of the lights. I put them to to bed earlier than the others, so usually they would wake up earlier. Then, since they're only a toddler/ baby, I think the game doesn't detect it, and that's why the lights are still off.
You could just get a lamp, or something, that you wouldn't mind having that on 24/7.

What I find interesting is that my Sims don't mind the dark when they're outside.  They seem to get that spooky looking no light moodlet when they're on the inside of a house.

Yes, that is interesting. But cowards get afraid of the dark outside as well.  ::)

Frugal sims will go in a room and just turn the lights off. Even visitors will do it. Once a visitor go I'm my baby's room and turn it off. They don't care if there is someone in the room lol.
