You said you had three floating plumbbops around the house? That is weird, because it means three sims are selected at the same time which is highly unusual.
If nothing helps described above, then try the following things:
1 Just quit the game, try the save file on another computer so you can actually see if the problem lies in your save file or the computer.
2 If it works well on another computer you could consider to defrag your own computer to make it run smooth again (which has helped me quite a
few times while having problems).
3 If it doesn't work, then I am afraid the problem lies indeed in your save file and you have to start over again.
4 But still, even then, you could try to save your family as a houshold to your computer and loading it back in a new save file. If that doesn't help,
then I think nothing will.
