Chapter 3: It's Good to be Home

Kaelyn was supposed to arrive back home in the afternoon, but her flight had been delayed and she didn't return until 1 AM. She had planned to take some pictures in Sunset Valley after she got off her flight, but she was too tired and just happy to be back home. She could tell her family about her trip tomorrow.

As quietly as she could, Kaelyn unlocked the door and entered her home. Just as she thought, the house was entirely silent, save for the soft humming of the refrigerator. She did notice that Sienna had finished her first sculpture, apparently a pedestal, and snapped a shot of it.

Kaelyn peeked in at Carina. She was fast asleep, cuddled up with her teddy bear. Sometimes, Kaelyn found it hard to believe such an energetic, hyperactive child could sleep so still and quietly.

Kaelyn took out the mummified teddy bear she'd bought and carefully slipped it into Carina's arms with her brown one. She then crept over to Kaelyn's dresser, cursed at a squeaky toy she mistakenly stepped on, and placed the butterfly she'd captured on her trip onto it. Carina loved the outdoors, so surely, a butterfly would be a nice little decoration to her room.

After one more glance at Carina, Kaelyn crept out of the little girl's bedroom and into her own room. Sienna was sleeping just as peacefully, probably because she worked hard on that sculpture. Kaelyn quietly slipped into her own bed, right next to Sienna's, and fell asleep in under five seconds.

Carina was the first to wake up at around 5 AM. She spotted the mummified bear as soon as she opened her eyes. "I'm going to called you Puppet!" she declared and hugged the new toy. "Oh? What's that?" In what seemed like a second, she spotted the butterfly on her dresser.

"Ooh, how cute!" she beamed at the little creature. "I'm gonna called you...Mira!"

Filled with energy already, Carina started spinning and dancing with her new bear around her room. In her joy, she forgot that it was still early and her noise from singing and bumping into things awoke Sienna and Kaelyn.

"Carina, shush!" Sienna called her from her bedroom.

"Sorry, Mommy," Carina whispered. "But come look at the presents Auntie bought me!"

Sienna sleepily looked at Kaelyn. "You bought her back presents?"

"Just a bear and a butterfly," Kaelyn answered. "How was I supposed to know she would be up at five in the morning, filled with energy?"

"May as well get up then," Sienna groaned. "What time did you get back anyway?"

"One, but I'll get up for now and go back to sleep when Carina leaves for school," Kaelyn said.

Sienna just shook her head and went to her sculpting station. She moved her first sculpture and started working on a block of wood. Kaelyn was a little surprised. How had Sienna gone from clay to wood in three days? Sienna said that was just how hard she had been working.

Sienna and Kaelyn were so busy talking, neither of them noticed when Carina snuck by them and into the bathroom to fiddle around with the sink.

She still had plenty of time before school, so Carina decided to play pretend with her dress-up chest. She chose her regal red princess gown.

And started a pillow fight with Kaelyn!

Sienna tuned out the ruckus behind her. She really wanted to focus on this wooden sculpture and get it done as soon as possible. For someone who had only gotten four hours of sleep, Kaelyn didn't seem too tired in Sienna's mind. Not if she was having a pillow fight with Carina. For some reason, that suddenly jogged her memory.

"Hey, Kaelyn!" Sienna said. "Are you still going to learn martial arts?"

"Yes!" Kaelyn replied between her and Carina's laughter. "That's where my next vacation will be. China. I can kill two birds with one stone."

Carina stopped hitting Kaelyn and put her pillow down with a serious look. "What?" she said softly.

"Kill two birds with one stone, Carina," Kaelyn repeated. "When I go to China, I can get started on martial arts and work on my photography skills at the same time. Easy."

"So you won't kill two birds with a stone?" Carina asked, feeling a little relief.

"No, I will," Kaelyn answered. "If I learn martial arts and photography while I'm in China, I'll be able to kill two birds with one stone."

"B-but...that's mean!" Carina sobbed. "Why would you kill the birds?! I like birds!"

"What? Wait a minute!" Kaelyn exclaimed, not understanding why her niece was about to go in hysterics. "I never said anything about killing birds!"

Sienna almost couldn't resist laughing. "Kaelyn, she doesn't understand," Sienna explained. "She thinks you literally mean you're going to kill birds with a stone."

"Oh! Carina, no!" Kaelyn told her, trying to calm her down. "I would never do that! I didn't mean it that way!"

"So...what does it mean then?" Carina asked, wiping her eyes.

"It's a figure of speech," Kaelyn explained. "It's an expression. Killing two birds with one stone means getting two things done at once. When I go to China, I'll be working on martial arts and photography while I'm there. I'll be improving two skills on one vacation. Understand?"

"Oh, goodie! That sounds much better!" Carina rejoiced. "Can we go play tag?"

"Sure. It's almost daylight."

Their game of tag lasted until the school bus arrived. Carina threw off her costume, hugged her aunt and ran off to catch the bus.

Shortly after Carina left, Sienna also left to get some air and let Kaelyn have the house to herself while she caught up on her sleep.

Before Kaelyn returned to bed, she wanted to wash her hands a little. Too bad she hadn't known the sink was rigged.

"Well, that was refreshing," Kaelyn groaned. There was no need to back to sleep now. That cold surprise had woken her up and reminded her of something she had to do: go to City Hall. She had to register herself as a self-employed photographer.

Kaelyn hopped in a taxi and headed over to City Hall. Now, she could really get started in her career as a photographer. It was a good thing she hadn't sold any of her pictures yet. They weren't worth much anyway, but everyone starts at the bottom.

After coming out of City Hall, Kaelyn met a woman named Molly French. She was a nice woman, but looked tired, despite her heavy make-up. She also had a little baby named Sandi. Kaelyn didn't have much of a hard time striking up a conversation with her, though she couldn't tell whether Molly was enjoying it or loathing. The baby didn't seem to mind, though.

When Kaelyn mentioned she had recently come back from Egypt, Molly asked if she had learned any music there, something she was very interested in. Kaelyn sang her the song "Oh, Where is my Mummy" and she loved it.

Sandi seemed to find her own foot more interesting.

It was soon time for Molly to go to work, so she picked up Sandi and headed off in a taxi. Kaelyn walked across the street into the local park to take some snapshots.

After school was dismissed, Carina made her way to the park so she could fish after she did her homework. Kaelyn was still there, so she gave Carina a little help. She didn't mention the prank from earlier, deciding that Carina probably didn't remember it anyway. Plus, there was no real reason to bring it up.

Meanwhile, Sienna had returned home, taken a nap and finished her wooden sculpture.

She only needed a few more simoleons to advance to the next level of her sculptor career, so she started on a wall of clay for her next sculpture.

Hours in, she was working feverishly.

Kaelyn and Carina were still at the park. Kaelyn was snapping photos while Carina was catching fish. One fish she caught was almost half her height.

Eventually, Kaelyn decided it was time to go home. Carina wasn't too disappointed. She was happy with her big catch and, as much as she loved the outdoors, she didn't like being in the dark anyway.

"Hey, Auntie," Carina said in the cab.

"Yes?"

"When are you going to China?"

"In two weeks, I suppose," Kaelyn answered. "Maybe just one week. Don't worry. I won't kill any birds with stones."

"No, I was going to ask something else," Carina told her.

"Okay. What is it?"

"What does martial arts have to do with photography?"

"Nothing, really," Kaelyn replied. "I just want to learn both. Though, you do have to travel to get started on either, so I guess that's a similarity."

"I want to fish in different countries," Carina said. "When will you take me?"

"I don't know really know about taking you," Kaelyn hesitantly admitted. Carina was immediately shocked by her answer. "It's not that I don't want you to go!" Kaelyn quickly explained. "You're just a little too excitable."

"No, I just want to fish everywhere!" Carina cried.

"Excitable was a bad word," Kaelyn said. "I mean you're too hyper. I worry you'll run off."

"I'll be good!" Carina promised. "I'll be good in China! Please, can I go?"

"It's not that I think you'll misbehave," Kaelyn explained. "I just think you'll run off every ten seconds because you're so hyper. I mean, look at you now. You're not even sitting correctly."

Carina sits down in the chair and puts her feet down. "I won't run off. I promise I won't. Please?" Carina pleaded. "Pretty please with all my fish on top?"

"I'll think about it," Kaelyn replied. "Not on this trip, though. Maybe if I return to Egypt again. I actually met two girls there you might like. But for now, the answer is no. You can't travel with me."

"Okay," Carina said sadly. "Is this punishment for my prank?"

Kaelyn wondered where that suddenly came from. "No, it's not, though thanks for admitting it," Kaelyn told her. "I said the answer is no for now. Another trip perhaps."

"Okay."

When the two got home, Carina took a joy ride on the couch to cheer herself up. She pretended she was zooming all the way to China.

Sienna was almost finished with her sculpture.

"Sienna," Kaelyn said, "will you be finished with that by tonight?"

"Hopefully. Why?"

"I have to talk to you about Carina."

"Did she run off and you had to chase her?" Sienna asked.

"No, something else."

Chapter 4: Carina Meets Kaylynn

Sienna finished her sculpture as quickly as she could so she could find out what Kaelyn wanted to talk about.

"So what's going on with Carina?" Sienna asked.

Kaelyn sighed. "In the cab on the way home, Carina asked me about my upcoming trip to China. She begged me to take her and I said no."

"Okay..." Sienna said with an eyebrow raised, not sure why this was a concern.

"Was she okay when I left for Egypt?"

"Yeah, she was fine. She missed you, of course, and couldn't wait for you to come back, but she wasn't depressed or crying her eyes out, if that's what you mean. You know she just wants to go fishing."

"I don't think it's just fishing," Kaelyn said. "I think she really doesn't want me to leave, for some reason. I think something else is bothering her."

Sienna thought for a moment. "Well.....I have a small idea," she finally said. "Maybe Carina wants to go with you because she doesn't have any friends here. Unless she goes fishing, she really just hangs around the house with me. But she never seems bored to me. Never wants to sit down."

"That doesn't mean she likes being alone," Kaelyn told her. "Maybe she just can't find anyone as hyper as she is to run around with."

Sienna shrugged her shoulders with a smile. "Hey, who knows? We're having this conversation now and for all we know, she could bring home a new friend tomorrow."

The next morning, Carina was off to school as usual. Before she left, Kaelyn and Sienna asked her how she was feeling, but all they got was a soft-voiced answer of, "I'm okay." Not really reassuring, but they didn't ask her more.

Sienna got to work on a new clay sculpture.

Meanwhile, Kaelyn took to photographing around Sunset Valley. She wanted to take as many pictures as she could to improve her skill. The first place she went was City Hall. She had forgotten to take a picture the last time she came.

Then, the schoolhouse. She was glad all the kids were inside.

Finally, she snapped the theater.

They weren't exactly splendid shots, but they were decent and sold nicely. Kaelyn went around town to snap shots of some more buildings. All the shots sold fairly well and Kaelyn went up in her career as a photographer. She just wished she could get a shot of the whole building.

Deciding to call it a day, Kaelyn wanted to head to the diner for a bite. But her cell phone rang just as she was about to get into a taxi.

"Hello?"

"Kaelyn, it's Sienna. Remember what I said last night?"

"About Carina? That she probably needs a friend?"

"Yeah, and that for all we know, she could bring home a new friend tomorrow?"

"Yes, I remember."

"Come back home now and look!"

"Wait, she brought home a friend?!"

"Yes!" Sienna replied excitedly. "Come see her friend! Hurry up!"

After wondering for a split second if her sister could a fortune teller, Kaelyn told the cab driver to take her home instead.

Right there in front of the house was Carina and another girl who looked exactly Carina's age. She had on black shoes, a black dress with a white undershirt and white ribbon in her hair. The girls were having a conversation. Carina didn't even notice Kaelyn get out of the cab.

Somehow, she managed to walk right past Carina and into the house. Carina's friend didn't seem to notice her either.

"What's her name?" Kaelyn asked Sienna.

"Kaylynn."

"What is it?" Kaelyn asked.

"Kaylynn," Sienna repeated.

"What? Why are you saying my name?"

Sienna laughed. "No, Carina's friend's name is Kaylynn. Kaylynn Langerak. But she spells it K-A-Y-L-Y-N-N."

"Oh!" Kaelyn exclaimed. Sienna just shook her head a bit.

Carina and Kaylynn, or Lynn, as Carina took to calling her so she wouldn't get her named mixed up with her aunt's, chatted outside for hours. They made faces and enjoyed each other's company.

Eventually, night fell and Lynn had to return home before her family started to worry. Since their class had a friend trip tomorrow, Lynn promised to be Carina's partner. They said goodbye and Lynn went off.

Back inside, Carina said hi to her aunt and her mother. "Where were you two? I didn't see you."

"Oh, just inside talking with each other," Kaelyn lied. They had really been spying on Carina and Lynn to see if they were having fun with each other.

"Oh, okay," Carina simply said. "I'm going to do my homework."

"Do you need any help?" Sienna asked her.

"No, I'm good," Carina answered. She walked off to her room to start.

"That's probably the first time I haven't seen her run to her room," Sienna told Kaelyn once Carina was out. "Think Lynn sucked the energy out of her?"

"They were doing a lot of talking and laughing," Kaelyn joked. "But I guess you were right. Maybe all Carina did need was a friend. You think Lynn will become her fishing partner next?"

"Fishing!" Sienna suddenly exclaimed. "I just remembered! After school, I was going to take her to the park to fish because I thought that would cheer her up. She didn't even mention it when she came in!"

"If she didn't mention it, don't tell her," Kaelyn said. "Let's see where she goes with Lynn."

Chapter 5: Careers and Cuteness

Sienna had developed her sculpting skills enough to work with ice. The first thing she did was ask Kaelyn to pose for a sculpture. Kaelyn was a little hesitant, but Sienna told her she would just be doing a simple pose, so Kaelyn agreed.

The ice sculpture came out so well, Kaelyn asked Sienna if she could keep it. Sienna smiled and told her she never had an intention of selling it. The sculpture was a gift for Kaelyn. There was no special occasion. Sienna just felt like making something special for someone. With Sienna's help, Kaelyn put the sculpture in their bedroom.

"You know, it's kind of creepy, having it stare at me while I sleep," Kaelyn joked. "But it stays!"

While Kaelyn was admiring her sister's gift to her and Sienna was off to create another ice sculpture, Carina was chatting on the phone with Lynn.

Carina was playing pretend when Lynn called. Apparently, Lynn was having a bad night, tired from cleaning up after her very messy family. Since Carina was in a prince costume, she couldn't help but pretend she was a prince talking to his "maiden princess".

Carina and Lynn talked for so long that Sienna had to remind Carina to go to bed. She quickly told Lynn good night, changed into her pajamas and jumped into bed. But before she closed her eyes, she asked, "Mommy, can I bring Lynn over after school?"

"Of course, you can," Sienna told her.

"Yipee!!!" Carina cheered. "Good night now!"

Sienna then left the room and Carina was asleep in a matter of minutes.

Kaelyn was on the couch, listening to a photography tabcast on her new tablet.

"Hey, Kaelyn."

"Yes, Sienna?"

"I don't think you'll have to worry about Carina when you go off to China."

"I think I know," Kaelyn said with a smile.

The next morning, Carina was off to school, Kaelyn was out for a photography session around town and Sienna was finishing up her ice sculpture.

She created an ice stand. It wasn't much, but selling it got her to the next level in her sculptor career.

Kaelyn was also looking to go up a level in her photography career before she left for China. Before she got around to snapping picture, however, she wanted to take a visit to the wishing well.

Kaelyn wasn't sure when the wishing well was build in Sunset Valley, but it was said to have actual magic and instantly grant any wish. Kaelyn wanted to make a wish just to see if it worked. But she wasn't sure what to wish for. There were only five things that could be wished for: love, a child, wealth, power and happiness.

Child - This wish was definitely out. Kaelyn was already helping to raise Carina. As wonderful as she was, Carina was a handful. Plus, as much as Kaelyn travels, it wouldn't be fair to constantly leave Sienna with two kids.

Love - Kaelyn did want to fall in love someday, but not right now. Now wasn't a good time.

Power - This could be a good one, but what kind of power? Power over what? This one was too ambiguous for Kaelyn.

Happiness - Kaelyn didn't even feel this one was necessary. She was already happy with her life.

With those four options out, wealth was the only remaining wish. Probably just a little more money for her trips. Kaelyn made her wish and tossed her coin in.

The wish was granted and Kaelyn gain 1,000 simoleons. She was happier to see the well really was magical, of course. The rumors had been true. But now that her curiosity had been satisfied, it was time to start snapping photos.

First, Kaelyn went to the fire station. She had to get a picture of  the fire truck.

That shot brought her so close to advancing that she only needed one more snapshot. She decided to snap the ice cream truck a few blocks away for her to advance.

Kaelyn was now a disposable debutante.

Since it was nowhere near time for Carina to get out of school and Sienna was probably still sculpting, Kaelyn treated herself to a lunch at the local diner.

After school, Carina brought Lynn home. The two talked and kidded around with each other for a little while, becoming good friends.

Then, they got started on their homework. Carina seemed to be having a slightly easier time than Lynn.

Kaelyn walked in on the girls and quietly passed by, so as not to disturb them. She was so happy to see Carina with Lynn.

Lynn had to leave right after their homework was finished, but she promised Carina she'd visit again the next time she was invited.

"Hey, how come I can never come over to your house?" Carina asked Lynn, though she really didn't care.

"Trust me. You wouldn't want to," Lynn answered. "My family is really messy. I'd spend more time cleaning up than with you, Cutie Rina."

"I'll take your word for it, Lynn," Carina said.

"Lynnette. Call me Lynnette," Lynn told her. "Because that's what I'm going to change my name to when I grow up, so I can get away from my messy family!"

"Okay! Lynnette! See you soon!"

Lynn hopped on her bike and took off. Carina watched until she was out of sight before heading back inside.

"Cutie Rina?" Kaelyn and Siena asked Carina when came back inside.

"Yeah! Lynn said she once read that "carina" means "cute" in some language, so instead of calling me Carina, she calls me Cutie Rina because I'm really cute."

"Well, that's adorable," Sienna told her. "Kaelyn's about to leave for China. Want to say goodbye?"

Carina jumped and gave Kaelyn the biggest hug she could. Sienna joined in.

"Are you still sad you can't come with me?" Kaelyn asked.

Carina shook her head. "Nope! Lynn says China has dragons and dragons breathe fire and are scary! So please don't get roasted, Auntie!"

Holding in her laughter, Kaelyn promised she wouldn't go near the dragons. She then headed out to the waiting taxi in the front. She was relaxed, knowing she didn't have to worry about her niece.

China was hot, but nowhere near as hot as Egypt. Kaelyn couldn't wait to get started.

I'd like to make a small suggestion.  :)

When readers open your story for the first time, the first thing they see is this:

"I hate that title, but I couldn't think of anything better."

It doesn't exactly project a positive emotion or encourage people to read your story.  Maybe modifying your first post would be a good idea.
