Building Contests 2012: 9 - Minimalist Miniatures

You must read the Rules and Instructions Thread first, if you haven't already. Updates have been made.

Your Task:
Things are getting pretty outdated around the SimNation and so things need to be made a little more modern, not just any modern though, it has to scream modern! The Councils think Minimalist Modern would be a good way to go, using bold shapes, colours and layouts to make an impression. Of course there is a slight catch in that all this has to fit around those pesky existing elderly structures, which naturally take up a lot of space!

Specifications:
  • Lot Type: Residential
  • Number of Bed Spaces: The House will need to be a suitable size for at least 2 Sims (Do not add any sims)
  • Budget: $45,000
  • Lot Size: 10x10 up to 20x20
  • Other: Minimalist and Modern designs.

Optional Specifications:
  • You may want to make bold and interesting layouts etc.
  • It's minimalist, don't go overboard on those decorative items!

Contest Start Date: 12:00am, Friday, 4 May, 2012
Contest End Date: 11:59pm, Thursday, May 17, 2012

Building Contest 2012: 9 - Miniature Minimalist  - May 4, 2012 - May 17, 2012
    ZapKid!

Congratulations ZapKid! Modern and Minimalist seem to really be ZapKid's strong point and he's just gone and proven it with a great Minimalist Entry! You can see ZapKid's Entry here and download it here.

ZapKid's Comment:

"Wow! Thanks to everyone who voted for me! I think everyone did a great job on the contest!

When I first entered the contest, I didn't have much of an idea. It was when I expanded my main shell to two stories when it finally came all together. I had the most fun making the exterior and garden in the back. My favorite part of the house was probably the garage; it was nice and roomy so I was a big fan of it.

I enjoyed having to make it so small and cheap. It took me an hour to get the exterior right, the interior was almost impossible.
I finally set on something I liked, and, well, here I am!

So thanks again, everyone! Everyone did stupendous and to be shocked I was surprised I actually won! Thanks for making my first winning contest a real whopper!"

Congratulations ZapKid! This thread is now open for comments!  :)

I quite enjoyed this contest  :). I'm open to comments on my entry, as usual.

As soon as I saw the theme for this fortnight, all I could think was, "this is Zapkid's contest". And so it was. Congratulations Zapkid, I loved your build and I'm so happy for your win!  ;D

This contest was so much fun! I have never tried to build anything modern looking before so it was a challenge I both enjoyed and despaired over. Keeping it minimalist was a real struggle.

A few comments:

Ausette - I was so inspired by your orange living room. What a great use of colour and it felt so fresh.

Neashleigh - I love the front of your house with just the two rocks. I wanted to go that route but I just couldn't hold myself back enough  ;)

Dane - I think it is awesome how your exterior seemed so much of the landscape. It felt like one of those houses that was built for a specific spot in order to complement the exterior landscape, and that screams contemporary design to me.

I really enjoyed this contest. I had never really built anything modern before and just learned the cheats for that sort of thing after I had built it. Every contest I enter I learn new things. Everyone did an amazing job on their Modern Minimalist . It was a bit difficult just voting for three. Great job everyone!  :)

Thanks, everyone! ;D

I'll take feedback/comments if anyone has them. Just because I won doesn't make my build perfect. right? :P

Hey guys I'm taking an extended hiatus... again. I'm out of ideas to build houses and I don't have as much fun designing homes like I used to; it feels more like a chore. So that's where I'll be, I will probably be back sometime. :P

Zap: Just like Ausette said, as soon as I saw this I knew this would be the one for you. Congrats!

Ausette: I really liked yours too. The only thing I would change would be just a little more exterior stuff. (like fountains, lounge chairs, etc.) But otherwise I thought it was great!

Anyone else want comments?

Congratulations, Zapkid! Your house is awesome! :) This contest was one of my favourites so far! Everyone did a great job.

Thanks, Decima! I loved how your house is built on the slope like that! It's spacious, and has great patterns throughout.

saltpastillen- Your landscaping is outstanding, and the basement windows are brilliant! ;D

I'm open to comments on my entry.

I'm open to comments on my entry.

I really liked how you used different coverings on the outside of the building. It made something that is very much a box look different and interesting - a great visual illusion.  Inside you had a very pleasing colour scheme, light wood and pale colours don't always look modern, but you pulled it of.

I have one question though. Can 2 sims actually sleep in that bed? I only ask because every time I've tried to decorate that way only one sim can get in the bed. Also, when I decorate and look at the interiors of sim buildings I tend to ask myself "can sims move in this house, would it be possible to use it for a game?". And when I saw your bedroom my first thought was; uh uh, that bed is going to be a problem. In real life though, it wouldn't be an issue and it sure looks pleasing.

P.S. I liked your garden too, it feels very urban.

saltpastillen- Thank you! :)

I wasn't even thinking about whether or not two sims would be able to sleep in the bed. I tested to see if one person could, but didn't check for two.
