My Sim has an extremely horizontally-long family tree, with 6 kids in Sunset Valley and around 10 more in travel locations... Could it be that one of the SV had given him a[nother] grandchild, making the tree go "over the horizontal limit"? Is there such thing?

No, the tree will scroll horizontally when you exceed the number of Sims that can be shown in the window.

I've had this happen many times and I think it's just a bug that EA needs to fix.  One solution that seemed to help is to move the family to another neighborhood.  You would do this by saving the lot to the library, then placing it in a new game.  That seems to get the family tree working again, but you're in a different neighborhood, so you may not want to do it.

We already have a topic about this and I'm going to merge this one with it.  Click here to visit Family Tree.

If you will move them to another neighbourhood you will lose all the genetic contact with the family members who are not living on your lot. That is a big risk you need to consider before even thinking of moving them.

Well I guess I'll just wait for a patch that hopefully fixes it. On the other hand, is there any way to erase all my foreign-country family tree parts, but keep the ones from the main neighborhood (sv)?

You can't edit the Family Tree unless there is a divorce, but you will still be linked if there is a child.

Since the new relationship options in CAS, do engaged sims show up on a family tree now or is it just CAS? The only way I can keep up with my Legacy Spares is through the Tree as not all have moved into homes.

I hate when that happens, Samoht!  Seems like it happens to all my families sooner or later.  I don't believe there's another fix just yet.  We need a patch from EA for this one.

I finally have a game going where i would like to follow the family tree, and it is bugged already even though i am still playing the first and second generation :( . I play Don Lothario of Riverview as a true heartbreaker, with 14 kids (i think) spread around Riverview and the three travel destinations. There have been minor weirdnesses until now (the foreign kids show up as kids long after they have grown up, as well as the Riverview kids still showing as kids/toddlers while on vacation, when they show up as ya/teen/child properly in Riverview), and the egyptian kids had a blank family tree page, but everything was fine until Don asked one of his former girlfriends and their teenage son to move in with him. Now neither of them can access the family tree :( . Has anyone come across any new info concerning this bug?

Yup, sounds like you got struck by the bug Ik.

Here's how it works, and how to avoid it.  Simple version: To avoid this bug, do not travel with unmarried Sims.  Not even Teens are safe.

This bug has everything to do with how locals in each WA location procreate.  In order to make a Local baby, all that is required is for a male Local to greet a female local and BAM they're preggo.  Except not really, because WA locals don't go through pregnancy, but within 9 days or however long it takes, the female Local will have a new child living in their house.  I'm sure there is some sort of formula the game uses to determine when a child needs to be born, probably due to the population levels of the location.  They will not have children with other locals who are already married with someone else, just with single locals and perhaps with teens (ew!).

The problem of course, is that when your Sim goes to China on vacation and the game has determined there needs to be more Locals, all that's required is for your Sim to say hello to someone of the opposite gender, and BAM in 9 days you'll have a full grown child that you never intended on having, living in some foreign location.  No woohoo or pregnancy required!

This seems to be just the beginning of the bug.  It must corrupt your game file to such an extent that it causes all kinds of other problems, like not being able to access the family tree, or loosing relative connections within your Sim's family, or worse case scenario your Sim or family may disappear or become playable but invisible.

I was VERY much hoping that this would all be fixed with Ambitions, but it obviously isn't, because people are still having these kinds of problems.

So the best way to avoid these issues is to limit your travel, and absolutely NEVER take an unmarried Sim on vacation!

Thanks for the explanation! Unfortunately, the single purpose of travelling for Don was to get girlfriends and get them pregnant in foreign locations (that was my personal goal for this heartbreaker, that he could only have girlfriends that would have children of his). Until the last trip to France when I tried to get one of his teenage sons move in with him, everything was fine and all his foreign children were really his (I knew he had a successful "try for baby" with each of the mothers). If I understand you correctly, going back to the last savegame before this trip to France should fix my problems if the family tree was fine then? I will have to try that, maybe that will save my game :) .

Yeah, hopefully you'll be able to recover your save.  :)

The bug probably didn't occur for you within the foreign girlfriends you have, but it could very well have happened with ANY female you came in contact with while on vacation.  That's the frustrating part about this bug.

Well, since he had a wish to be girlfriends with every single female he met abroad and I did my best to fulfill his wishes, I am pretty sure that apart from two married ladies in France, he did not get into contact with any non-girlfriend (and he never left a girlfriend before she was pregnant ;) ). And if I understood correctly, the two married ladies are out of the picture because they are already married to another guy, right?

Yeah, the married females you met probably didn't cause the issue.  But meeting that many foreign ladies, anything is possible!  It could be due to one of the locals you met, RIGHT at the moment you met them.  And then even if you did woo them, the bug would have already happened.
