Stockpiling seeds

Do you stockpile gardening stock when you play a generational/legacy style game?

Playing my Cult of Boojham (see the stories forum), I decided that my founder would use gardening as a temporary income source.  Normally, my gardens spiral out of control as I find more and more interesting things to plant.  To avoid this, I decided to limit my founder to only the common crops (apple, lettuce, grape, tomato) with the intent of creating a good seed base for a later generation and then stopping.

I've been putting the perfect produce in the family inventory to keep it from being used or eaten.  I thought it would do the trick.

Then I added a natural cook to the lot and she autonomously cooked apple pancakes.  I have no idea where the apple came from--there weren't any in the refrigerators.  I suspect, but can't prove, that she might have pulled it from the family inventory.

I'll experiment tonight, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has a hoarding tendency?  Where do you store produce you don't want eaten?  Inaccessible refrigerators?  Chests that can be bought in foreign locations?  Leave them on the lot somewhere?

I don't think she took the apple from your family inventory.  When they autonomously make something, they most likely buy the ingredients.  That's what you do when you direct them to make something if you don't have the ingredients on hand.  You probably didn't notice the $4 coming out of your funds to purchase the apple she used.  That's my best guess anyway.

I use the chests from foreign countries to store my perfect produce for use in later generations.  I usually have my garden ongoing, but I like to have a couple of perfect pieces of each fruit and vegetable stashed away in case something goes wrong and I lose part of my garden for some reason.

I agree with Pam; your sim could impossibly have taken it from the family inventory, it's a safe place for these things. They can buy all ingredients when they decide cook, but it's going to be more expensive than going to the actual store yourself.

It's not much more expensive, though.  Only like a dollar more.

Yeah, the importance of that depends on how rich your sim is. I once played with a really poor guy and those few dollars were important, though he even more often just grew his own vegetables.
