Is there anyway to disable the mastercontroller story progression notifications at the top right? Like Pauline and Hank have split up! Etc~

Yes, it's in the Story options for Story Progression, check the FAQ and Ctrl-F for "Stories" and you'll find it.

Long answer: Please have a look here. This is the list of FAQ DeNile has mentioned.

Short answer: Open the NRaas -> StoryProgression -> General Options menu. Select All Stories from the list, choose None. Changing this option should avoid further story notifications from being displayed. Note that this does not affect notices that are generated for the household by EA (such as when a friend of a household member is about to die).
