What are ambitious careers for Sims. I want to establish a good reputation but also earn a high salary. Maybe surgeon... ???

The site has put up an extensive amount of info on careers and what needs to be done to reach level 10. It would take light years to put it in a simple post. I suggest you read the careers part of this site's guide and decide which career you want to embark on.

I prefer the Medical Career as Sims earn a lot and its only a 1 skill career and you don't have to make friends with employees.

However, the Business Career is a career where you can make friends, earn a lot and earn a high status (you also get to ride about in a limo!). As well as this, you earn very high bonuses so its good if you have a large family to feed!

Oh and I forgot to mention that the hours of work decrease as you get more and more promotions :)

I like the military career since when you get to level 10 you work one day a week and get paid a lot for the one day.  Then you have time to establish youself in other things, whether it be a family, or gardening, or painting, or smoozing, partying etc.

I like the military of the ones I've tried best.

Science annoyed me as I hated all the gardening and fishing.
Journalism also annoyed me as there was a lot of reports and book writing, but if you want to be an author anyway it's a good one.
I'm trying out police at the moment and so far I like it, although I've had to rummage in a few garbage bins and write reports.
Next I'm going to try criminal.  8)

If you want a career that requires no skills then business is probably the way to go. Medical annoys me because of the call outs in the middle of the night. Science is fun because you get to do experiments on stuff once you get to level ten but does require you to learn three skills.
I don't like journalism and I hardly ever do the sports career.

personally I think science is easier than medicine because science skills actually benefit your sim in the long run (e.g. maintain your house, get ingredients for ambrosia...) while logic does nothing for you.

the hours in the medical field are also very punishing especially because you have to read journals every night. ii n comparison science is very relaxed.

I usually don't go for professions if I'm playing a large family, because honestly, the  time Sims spend in rabbit-hole jobs are a relief for me. My favourite professions are artist, gardener or alchemist. I also like the day-care profession if the house isn't crowded with household sims. ::)
My favourite rabbit-hole careers are probably Cooking and Science because you get to work on very useful skills instead of the... not very useful skills. Business and Medical careers are also nice and come off handy.

I think Logic's quite helpful. If your sim has children, he can teach the skills he knows to them. I found that to be faster than letting kids learn skills on their own.
But of course, I might be wrong as my memory's pretty rusty. ;D

I really enjoy the self-employment careers. Gardener, writer, artist, sculptor, etc. Nector Maker is HARD WORK by the way. I have one in Sunlit Tides. The entire family gardens to keep up.

My favorite rabbit hole jobs are police, business, athletic, and politician. Medical is brutal on the hours. My one medical Sim was barely home to see her family. They pretty much grew up without her.

I get impatient with the ambitions careers and have never taken any one of them very far. I think I have a level 6 stylist somewhere, but that's as far as I've gotten. I really want to have a Fireman and take that Sim all the way to level 10, but I'm just not very good at it.

I always go for cooking, complete it and then do something else.  It's quick and easy, very quick if you have a workaholic sim, but, the main reason I like it is the fridge reward at the end.  Lovely moodlet every time the a sim passes near it and food that never spoils.

I think one thing to steer clear from unless you have another source of income or can get promoted fairly quickly is the sports career. I am currently playing a character and he is barely earning $100 a day.

Normally, I prefer to get my first character as an artist/writer. I have them paint until they get a high fun level before making them write for a bit. I bet there is a way I can make them enjoy writing but at the moment I haven't really bothered looking because they need to paint for a decent income early on.

For writing, get the Egyptian incense and put it near your sim - it will slow down the rate of fun decay.  Also, it helps to stick with writing children's books - they aren't a whole lot of Simoleans each, but you can dash off two a day with a break in between to get that mood back up, and on a per page basis, they're actually outstanding money makers.

On topic: like Wai, I put a sim through the cooking meatgrinder first thing, to get the fridge.  I'll make a sim a scientist to get some time with the upgrade gun, filling my house with objects that have positive mood let auras.  But hands down, my favorite, especially for established families, is gardening.  There are no hours, and if you have multiple sims in the house in the gardening profession they all get credit from the same harvest.  It's ridiculously fast to progress, too - a stand of money trees can get you to level 10 in one day.
