Are legacies and dynasties hard?
« on: April 13, 2012, 06:15:01 PM »
I want start a legacy or dynasty in my game, but I don't think I could stick to so many rules (like Pinstar's, for example). Which kind of makes me feel a little sad because so many other people have done legacies/dynasties.  :(

By the way, what's the difference between the two?

Another example. Just too much to follow, but I really want to try. *sigh*

The legacy is Pinstar's challenge, although there are other different types as well. The dynasty is a challenge hosted on this forum by Metro and there are two types - the Immortal Dynasty challenge and the Townie DecaDynasty challenge. Most of the stories you see are probably the Immortal Dynasty one.

If you're worried about how hard it'll be, you don't have to follow all the rules for the legacy. Basically, if it's a generational game then it's a legacy and you can put it on that board even if it hardly follows any rules. For example, in my own legacy I use cheats and mods and don't follow any of Pinstar's rules. So it doesn't have to be difficult at all. :)

I think you can do 'unofficial' Immortal Dynasties as well where you can use cheats and stuff, but you'd have to mention that you're not going for HoF (Hall of Fame) so everyone knows it's an unofficial attempt. :)

Well with a dynasty you have to follow all the rules and fill the requirements or you fail. But with a legacy the main idea is just that you have the ten generations. If you break a rule here and there it is fine. Also, the requirements aren't exactly neccessary, they are just something that will help with your score.

So I would say the dynasty is a lot harder since the legacy is much more laid-back because we don't have a hall-of-fame for it or something that would make you "fail".
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0.

Yea, but there are unofficial attempts in which people use cheats. That's why I mentioned that if Kaye really wants to have a go at the dynasty, maybe even just as a practise before her real attempt, then she can maybe try it with cheats or with more lax rules for a bit before her real attempt.

Legacy is nearly impossible to fail unless your computer acts up or you get bored.
Dynasty is harder but if you have a plan and are careful it's not real difficult

The hardest part of any challenge is finishing it.

As far as following rules is concerned, you have only yourself to please.  If you're okay with not following every rule and it helps you enjoy and continue your legacy/dynasty/other challenge, go for it.  If I disregard one rule, I try to make another for myself to make things harder for me to compensate.  Some of the best rules are the ones you make up yourself for your family to follow; these are what set your story apart from others if you choose to share it.

You could make a miscellaneous story? Then you make your own rules

Dynasties may be harder to play, but you've got a huge advantage in that the writer of both Dynasties is right here on our Forum and will answer your questions.  In fact, several people will answer your questions.  It's hard to get any support when playing a legacy.  You're just on your own for that one.  And yes, Dynasties are difficult.  They have to be in order to be worthy of being called a Dynasty Challenge.  But really, when you get into it and get the hang of things, it settles down nicely and isn't nearly as daunting.

I love both. Dynasties are more challenging and they get updated for every new piece of content. Legacies are more relaxed and you have the freedom to do whatever because the rules were not updated and so you basically have to make your own rules up.  :)

I've only played legacies, not dynasties, and they're not that difficult, depending on the rules you choose for yourself. Then again, I tend to give myself very few rules.  ;D I think the main challenge of the legacy is whether you can commit to ten generations - not an easy feat, but more in terms of it being a time-sink than the actual experience being that difficult. I highly recommend you make your own rules because at the end of the day it's still a game and it should be fun, which means that it poses enough of a challenge for you to be interested but not enough that you want to tear your own hair out.

A legacy isn't so bad. The humble beginnings are a bit rough, because of the age timing.

I tend to have loud opinions. So sorry. I got tons of issues, lol. I can also be found on Yahoo! Answers.

Dynasties are quite hard but a lot of fun, and probably more fun (to me) because they're a challenge. The hardest bit is the beginning and the end though, when you're in the middle of it you usually have tonnes of money and plenty of sims around to play with and you can buy pretty much anything you want. Legacies are usually a bit easier, but some of the variations on them are probably just as hard as a dynasty.

What you say about Dynasties is true of the Immortal Dynasty Challenge, but not for the Townie DecaDynasty Challenge.  The DecaDynasty has you start with a new household every time your Sim gets married and moves out.  All the money in the previous household is gone.  So far, I've only had $5,000 to $10,000 when starting with the new household and have to build the fortune up all over again.

Okay, I've decided to give it a shot. I'm going to make a legacy and I'm making my own rules. Thank you for all the responses!  ;D

They're really two different monsters. I have both a legacy and a dynasty. My legacy is a free for all. The dynasty is more challenging rule wise. For me partially, is the challenge to stick with it.
