If he uses the weight machine, he'll start to get muscular after the first one or two workouts.

The other piece of equipment when put into the game is a weight machine.  You can see what it looks like by going to the gym.  It's the one where they sit on a bench. I don't know what the cost of it is to be honest but it may be the §1500 one.

The treadmill is the one they walk/run on and it increase their cardio levels (makes them lose weight).

They are all temporary.  For your Sim to maintain the larger muscles, he/she must continue to do strength workouts.  Same for the weight loss and cardio workouts.

A Sim born a certain shape seems to stick with that shape. I've had Sims that have done next to no athletic work at all and when they turn YA are very muscular and the only thing I can think of is that a parent passed it on.

I have Chris use the weight machine but after 7 workouts he has muscles but not muscle definition?

Oh, are you talking about that muscle definition slider that's in CAS?  Yeah, that's only something you can do in CAS.  No amount of working out will change the muscle definition.

And even through breeding it seems to vanish as the generations increase.

I didn't know that.  You're saying that if you start with a Sim that has a lot of muscle definition, the kids and grandkids won't necessarily have it?  Is it because you can't find a spouse with muscle definition?

I've had Sims with maxed out definition have children and their children still have definition but less of it when you look in CAS. It was a while ago though so it could have changed since I last checked. As in right after LN's release.
