No option for child at school to meet friends or talk to friends

My sim aged up to child, and when he went to school, his only options were "work hard" "normal effort" or "slack off". There's no option for meeting or talking to friends. Has this happened to anyone else?
How can I fix it?

Or, just freakishly, there was the one day he couldn't talk to any friends because he hadn't made any because he's a day ahead of his class.

Is it possible he's the only kid in school? I didn't think that could happen.

Take a quick gander in map view or edit town to see if there are any other families with school-aged children.  It's possible there aren't any; story progression will take steps to remedy that eventually, but it's not going to happen right away necessarily.  Or you can try dropping an extra family with kids into the town.  Give the kids a day to show up at school and see if your active child can interact.  If not, you know you've got a problem bigger than just no other kids in town.

It's standard procedure for any computer program.  It's the first thing an IT person will tell you to do, so might as well do it yourself.

I do it Pam, and also turn off my computer every night.
