Oh and if Carl can fund the site purely on ad clicks, I'd be astonished.

They don't do the ad click thing anymore, and haven't done that for a long time.  It makes it too easy to cheat.  People were setting up proxy-bot combo programs that would click on the ad, close the window and change the IP address so the next click would register as a unique page view.  Some more popular sites just told their patrons to click on all the ads in order to support their site, and a lot of people were more than happy to do that.  You could ruin a business that way by forcing them to have to pay more in advertising than they could conceivably receive in revenue.  People were doing the same thing to cheat their YouTube videos to the top of the rankings.  Neither is possible anymore.

Web advertising is now done by ad views, meaning they pay for the number of times their ad is on a page that someone visits.  It requires a pre-set number of views to generate one cent.  So when you consider the fact that this forum and guide, as well as all of Carl's other guides, can generate as many as a million unique hits a month...yes, he can fund this site strictly through ad revenue.

There are people who not only support their websites doing this, they earn a living doing it.
Old forum mods never die.  We just get archived.
